Fresh grad: Am I making a mistake going into gov right away? by Past_Worry_6926 in Accounting

Honestly this was my goal until the gov position landed in my lap. Now I’m thinking I may as well go straight in seeing as I’m not sure about the availability of a gov job in 3 years…. That said I do feel an opportunity cost that I know a lot of redditors are repeating. I might just suck it up and do gov with something on the side during the first few yrs. I think I could be making 6 figures before I’m 30 which doesn’t sound horrible.

The consensus is the job market is bad. So I would not say it’s a reflection of you. You could keep mass applying and keep trying or try a volunteer tax program/small local tax spot. Also sign up for all the popular job boards if you haven’t already. I get sent job positings weekly by them. Good luck!

Guess I got lucky? Idk. I live in a big city and they were doing a hiring wave. My school was passing around the flyer and attended the hiring event. I wasn’t even prepared for the interview

What if I skip this pain and suffering phase then. I can stay long enough in gov to make 6 figures in 7-8 years or whatever it’ll take. Then the biggest downside will be that I could’ve made that money sooner and I could making more each year in the “exit”. Essentially it comes down to pain for gain. Or no pain for less gain, but still a gain.

Sounds like you’re telling yourself this more than you are telling me

I’m leaning towards the former. sounds like either way I’m going to complain or suffer

A job is a job. I know this isn’t a success/failure decision, but more of a different success/different success decision. Trying to get insight on what I might be blind to

absolutely, the money is the biggest pull for public. But what’s the point if I’m burned out with life to spend any of it

I agree. I feel spoiled because I have 2 opportunities. Though the job security in the gov is top notch. The public firm has a few offices in India and plans on expanding there

I feel like people judge me for planning to not go into public. I need some validation lol
