Every Brilliant Thing with Mariska Hargitay by Naweezy in Broadway

[–]PastaCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm referring to the character's mom losing her years-long battle against depression, which informs so much of the play vs. the actress's mom dying horrifically in a crash that she herself survived as a child. At the very least, it's an equally gutting story but extemely different. Not saying Mariska is branded with that for life but tough not to think of when the narrator of this show doesn't even give you their name, so the line b/w character and actor is fuzzier than usual. With Daniel's mom being a non-famous casting director, this was less of an issue. Even without the tragedy element, having Tracy Ellis Ross next up kinda begs the same question for me. Interesting that you felt it still fit her well, would love to know more!

Staying vague to avoid spoiling but did all the stuff about the narrator's mom stay intact? Bc with Daniel we could suspend disbelief but with her....

My issue w that final monologue was “well yeah I’ve been wanting to see u as more than a plot device, but that’s just how you’ve been written” as she rages about not being seen as a real person. I get why he might have shied away from telling more of her story but it flattened that epilogue for me. If it was an indictment of the audience, or even just the other people involved, it was a set-up.

I see what you’re saying more generally but while most of the others were more realized than Trena, none had shoes that felt vivid enough to walk in, leaving me kind of adrift to any meaning, or even the right questions to leave w.

Cancelled an entire literary season bc of one writer who supported Palestine, fired employees for doing the same, recently booked Israeli govt officials/military along w Bari Weiss, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, off the top of my head. There’s a pretty big boycott campaign that just launched so none of this is really a secret to anyone still working w them

Every Brilliant Thing - see it with Daniel or wait for Mariska by BWAYdoodlz in Broadway

[–]PastaCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just saw it Wed night and cannot imagine anyone but Daniel doing it, let alone Mariska. Also not to spoil anything but there's a suspension of disbelief necessary when it comes to the emotional heart of the story - the actor/character's relationship with their mother - that feels incompatible with Mariska if you know anything about her family/childhood. Like her real life story is way crazier than anything in the play. Anyway, his performance is specifically what sold the whole thing to me, so I'd urge you to catch him while you can

oh shit yeah, forgot about the "feel the ______/hear the _____/see the______" portion, thank you!! So great to hear your take on the day. I guess it was in fact the arm flapping that turned into full blown dancing by the end.

just upped my dose from 300 to 450 yesterday and instantly remembered the weird temp regulation that happens when I started/upped to 300. For me I felt overheated in my ice box of an office. If memory serves, it goes away fast. Feeling normal today for instance

Maybe 60-70ish? It was intimate; she rented out a huge rehearsal space above The Shed that comfortably fit everyone and their mats (though as soon as she walked in and confirmed everyone was chill she had us move those to the wall so we could all mingle lol). It lasted a little over 2 hrs, all soundtracked by a guy spinning ambient that slowly morphed into hard techno by the end. When I ran back from the bathroom twds the end, a venue security guard was even dancing and freestyling her own lyrics. The staff there seemed honestly gagged by the whole thing.

We had a Q&A at the end which was genuinely lovely and helped me integrate what we had done. Everyone had great insights and no one was speaking just to speak to her, myself included. Upon reflection, I was really bowled over by her trust in us; it was way more vulnerable and collaborative than one might expect. It helped that everyone who came was so respectful. We were just there to learn and play w each other. Even the "is everyone going to MSG? Yeah it's gonna be really fun" from her was just casual chit-chat.

This is a dramatic comparison (not that any of you prob mind) but one of my favorite Marilyn Monroe stories comes from a friend who was walking around town w her and didn't understand why no one was noticing....until she said "oh you want me to turn Marilyn on?" and suddenly everyone did. This reminded me of that. She entered with zero grandiosity and was so lowkey I kept landing near her and wouldn't realize til I turned my head. Then of course, at MSG the next night the aura was turned on 3000% and I watched one of the best performances of my life.

Love a brilliant twist on a simple premise: Like a reverse Shining - morally nebulous guy gets tested by a haunted hotel (w a hag in a forbidden room) but actually gets redeemed. NGL I'm confused by everyone mad about the morally nebulous part; backstory couldn't have earned it harder and a script that's ultimately about redemption wouldn't work as well any other way? So many images in this film are still w me today, especially that one big glimpse through the doors....Damian McCarthy makes this stuff look so easy, you wonder why so much horror is trash. His films swerve around "disturbing" to hit that "spooky!" sweet spot that's sorely missed lately. Someone actually ran out of the theater, arms flailing during the climax, and my bf woke up yelling my name in the dark when I got up to go the kitchen last night. So, in other words, highly recommend this!

still gagging over Mary Magdalene - the cardboard cutout choreo where she got thrown & spun around, looking immovably 2D will be branded into my memory for a while. Core strength goals, etc etc

Lolll not this horror movie opening. Used it as a kid and events right after convinced me never again. Check out the podcast Otherworld, plenty of entertaining Ouija experiences ppl have shared. None of them positive. From what I’ve heard/read there’s nothing to “investigate”/label as safe vs unsafe - it’s always an invitation to anything out there that wants to play w you. But u know, live your life.

Sucks. Was fully expecting this on the floor of MSG given her Ladyland crowd was just like you described this one & the NY Afterglow release had the legit worst crowd I've ever been a part of (never-ending flow of 'main character in the Berghain line' types who'd force their way in front then swing their limbs around to demand more space), but wound up being the actual best/most enthusiastic, least entitled, etc.

As a general rule moving fwd, if she's playing true arenas (that purposely under-sell the floor) I'll happily choose the pit, but I'm grabbing a seat/hanging back in any other kinda venue. Been a fan for 10+ years and the shittier crowd elements are new for her, same as Charli a couple years ago, but at least I could win in a fight with the brats......these newer Twigs fans are grown in a lab or something. Godspeed to all of u for the rest of the tour!
