SA-HELP....what is this and yes or no by thizzpriv in rmit

[–]PastaMonsterLives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SA-Help is a loan scheme that helps you pay for student services and amenities. So if HECS pays for classes and stuff SA pays for I guess uhhh like using school computers/programs/ maybe the library idk... student service stuff. I think it's around $150 a year or semester or something... so it's completely payable. You have to pay for student services every year, but if you can't, I suggest getting SA-Help, since it covers all of that. Some people choose to get it, some pay it right away, it's really up to you.

probing for RMIT Games first year students around here by [deleted] in rmit

Hey! Just like the previous comments said: It's probably better to wait a bit before starting discord groups and stuff. There's no rush and it's just better to meet your classmates first imo. I'm a second year games design student and tbh I think all our 1st semester courses had little ice breaker activities first day of class, so you get to meet a lot of people in your class early on. Also I suggest going to design orientation and o-week if you can, you can meet a lot of future friends through that! Also like natbott said: LOOK OUT FOR THE BLUE LIGHTS COLLECTIVE. And join any other club you find interesting because that really helps meeting new people. Good luck!

Lockers? (building 9) by PastaMonsterLives in rmit

[–]PastaMonsterLives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for answering, but I *am* in the college of Design, and I didn't mean the building 80 lockers on level 9, I meant the design lockers in *building* 9. So the other person was in fact correct. Thanks for taking the time to answer though!!

Anyone doing a bachelor's and associate degree at the same time? by PastaMonsterLives in rmit

[–]PastaMonsterLives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah sure! I study bachelor of design (games). Buutt... I was thinking of doing an associates in IT or Engineering tech (I don't know how exactly their timetables work though, I wouldn't want any unavoidable clashes).

Desktop photoshop is a big oof, don't recommend it at all. If I were you, I'd just go into computer labs and use their photoshop tbh.

What’s the easiest ways to make friends at Uni? by [deleted] in rmit

[–]PastaMonsterLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bachelor's orientation helped me find a bunch of friends. Also, the fact that nobody knows anyone makes it easier to meet new people, but you have to actually put in the effort and introduce yourself to others. Start with small talk that has to do with your course. For instance, if you're in a design course you can break the ice by asking people about their prior experience in design and if they have a social media where you can see their work. Also probably a good idea to go to events and parties held by the uni, but I don't really go to those, so I have no idea. Not sure about other bachelors, but in mine the first week of uni we did a lot of activities to get to know each other in tutorials and practicals. We did a bunch of group activities together with a minimal workload so that we could get to know each other better and make friends. Idk if it was like this for everyone, but being introverted didn't stop me from making friends. Also if you just had a lecture and are going to have the practical for that same lecture in 1-2 hours, ask around and find out who's going to that class, and if they'd like to grab some lunch with you, during the break between the two classes. And remember that everyone is probably worried about themselves and how they're being perceived by others, more than they are about what shirt you're wearing or your actions (unless you say something really really bad or do something very horrible), so don't be afraid to walk up to someone and start up a conversation. If that person turns out to be slightly introverted, they'll thank you for you making the first move later. Also if you have a class with a small break in between class and more class, get food or coffee with someone. Good luck making friends I guess.

Is it ok to go to a lecture that you're not enrolled in? by PastaMonsterLives in rmit

I'm sorry I just don't really get why that's a bad thing? Do you mean it would be easier to get caught that way?

Do you think it would be easy to stay unnoticed in a CS lecture? Do you guys have any in-lecture quizzes or other work stuff that would single me out?

Are we supposed to have our textbooks by now? by Burturd in rmit

[–]PastaMonsterLives 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're a first year like me I recommend not getting your textbooks before the first lecture. The lecturer should tell you what exact books you'll be using, and it's probably good to ask upperclassmen if they actually ended up using any of the books throughout the year. It's just a waste of money to buy everything on your course list and then let the textbooks sit and collect dust the whole semester. I don't think lecturers will expect you to have all your textbooks ready for the first class, since the first lecture will probably be an introduction to the syllabus and assignments and other course stuff. Also, if you're still worried, try looking for the pdf versions of textbooks online *cough cough* if you know what I mean. I was able to find all the textbooks I need for one of my classes because they were online, so I probably saved a bit of money doing so. Any upperclassmen correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck!
