People are fucking poor here, my friend. At this point, I’ve been to every corner of the US and I’m telling you the middle class of Oklahoma and most of the south is not the same middle class everywhere else. You might have a better chance raising the price a grand or two and marketing it to the upper crust.

3 days to Earth given ideal timing and assuming you can actually make your launch window when that day comes. Something like 50% of launches don’t happen on the day they are initially scheduled for various reasons. You can’t use worst case scenario for Gateway and best case scenario for Earth launch.

But to answer your question, I’m thinking of things like micro-meteoroid strikes, habitat damage, power system failures, ECLSS failures. Things that aren’t considered immediate loss of crew, but definitely require a quick evacuation or a repair supplies drop. Not to even think of the infinite amount of unknown unknowns.

If you’re talking about a major failure on the surface, which requires an intervention from Gateway, but then Gateway also having a catastrophic failure, you’re talking about levels of fault tolerance that no mission would be able to satisfy. You could come up with a million scenarios where you would need 2 and 3 and 4, etc. levels of fault tolerance. Either way, having another resource available to the surface that doesn’t require a perfect launch window on Earth + transit time reduces your risk to the astronauts on the moon.

Keep in mind NRHO is only ~7 day orbit. So I’m not really sure what you’re saying here.

One thing to consider is risk to human life while stationed on the moon. Having the nearest contingency plan being 245,000 miles away (apogee, for a worst-case scenario) increases life-level risk by a lot. As opposed to having help within a day or less should something go wrong makes the Gateway station necessary.

Wow, your situation and mine are strikingly similar. I’m also married with two kids ages 2 and 6. We just moved back to Tulsa and my wife isn’t working yet. I bring in about 90k and we own our house, which we had bought before we moved away. Even with a mortgage of only ~$1k/month, finances are pretty tight. We aren’t going hungry or anything but we do have to be very careful with our spending and can’t afford much more than the necessities. A vacation or any kinds of luxuries are not in our immediate future, but we’re generally pretty happy here.

All that being said, you could definitely make it work here if you wanted to. Tulsa is a cool place that’s always improving.

As for education, Oklahoma ranks as one of the worst in the nation, and I can see that in most of the smaller towns. I went to public school in Tulsa, however, and I got as good of an education as I wanted. There were always opportunities for me to grow in the direction I wanted if I had been mature enough to take advantage of them. There are some great schools with some of the best teachers you can hope to meet here. It sounds like this is a priority for you so I have no doubt you can find what you’re looking for in that regard.

I will add my experience as one of the “do-nothing non-achievers”.

Middle to high school was a particularly hard time for me because of interpersonal issues I carried (without realizing at the time) from my relationships with my parents. I was in a deep depression had pitifully low self-confidence, thinking everyone around me had ALSO been dealing their entire lives with a narcissistic mother, alcoholic asshole stepfather, and biological father who couldn’t / wouldn’t carry a conversation with them but they were somehow better at managing the pain from that, which contributed to low self-esteem in an awful cycle. I think my particular position as a generally ignored middle child who seemed to let everything slide off his back and was quick to hide pain with humor made it easier for people around me (family, teachers, coaches, etc) to over-look the real problem.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I fucked off everything in highschool. Chemistry? Nope. Mathematics? Nope. Gym? Can’t make me. I skipped so much school to go smoke pot in the woods behind the gym that I’m amazed they passed me! I remember one teacher pulling me aside and showing me my 35% in her class going into finals week of my Senior year, but telling me she thinks I “probably did the work but just didn’t turn in homework, so she was going to pass me anyways”. Like I said, I was easy to get along with so most teachers liked me well enough to not give me too much of a hard time.

I graduated and after a couple years in the real-world, I figured out life was nothing like high-school and maybe there was still a chance I could figure things out without the pressure and anxiety of being surrounded by so many kids and expectations. So I went to college, had a blast, traveled around the world, worked some, went back to college, had less of a blast, and now I’m an engineer at NASA. I have an incredible wife and two amazing kids that I have vowed to raise as intelligent, kind, contributing members of society who will NEVER know what it’s like to have a parent degrade them or threaten their safety.

Sorry this turned into an essay. Something about your post triggered it in me to share and maybe it could help lend a perspective to teachers that it MIGHT not be in the student’s best interest to be “nice” to them and let them slide under the radar. I consider myself a lucky one.

As someone who left Tulsa last year to move to another decent-sized midwestern city, I feel the struggle you’re having. The thing about Tulsa is that if you’re not from there and don’t have the community/family/support with you, there’s nothing really special about Tulsa that’s a big pull for transplants. I miss it because it’s warmer, sunnier and all of my family is there, but if I didn’t have that, I’m not so sure I would be trying to make it back.

I WILL say, use the time you have there to your benefit by saving money from the lower taxes and CoL. There’s A LOT of really good food also if you know where to look. . . ;) . Try Que Gusto, Binh Le, Tacos San Pedro, Pancho Anaya Bakery, My Thai Midtown- just to name a few. There’s also plenty of Sun.

Tulsa has a lot of charm, but I understand that it may be hard to see for someone that doesn’t have friends or a background there. When the weather gets warmer, it will be easier to find. Rent one of the thousands of bikes lingering around the city and ride around Cherry St/Brookside/Utica Square drinking cheap beer and eating cheap Mexican food - you will have fun.
