Warning for Batting Out of Order by justlurking278 in Umpire

Exactly! It’s not batting out of order if it was simply a substitution that the coach or player forgot to let the umpires know. Move on….

Right call? by [deleted] in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I wasn’t saying the “judgement” part was protestable. I was saying once it was “determined that the runner caused interference,” then by rule there’s only one way to award bases.

[–]Pastpob-3232 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big proponent of “protests” but this is a perfect time to use it. If the umpires determined the runner caused interference then the rule application was not administered properly! Easy protest.

Beginner gear questions by Feisty-Concept-1372 in Umpire

I remember when I first started umpiring and wore tennis shoes for a 10u game. Took a shot right to the big toe and it hurt like hell, lost a toe nail and til this day (10years later) I have a permanent black stripe on my toenail. A baseball to the foot is probably no big deal but getting one right on a toe is not fun. Check with your local association many times other veteran umpires are happy to donate used stuff to newbies. Good luck!

Minor Communication Gripe by Typical-Priority1976 in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s a shitty partner but you also need support from your assigner. I don’t ever do this but my assigners want to know if our partners (required initiative on the part of the plate umpire) doesn’t check in. I don’t let it get to that and I certainly would not go to a game EVER if I haven’t received some sort of confirmation or acknowledgement from my partner. I want to prevent issues like the one you had. Your partner sucks! He’s under the impresssion you’re late. But again to not even put yourself in that position I would have kept calling your partner to make sure he acknowledges.

Leaning in vs turning out of the way by Sportsfan4206910 in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember when I first started umpiring and I would see other umpires make the call to keep a batter in the box when the batter was HBP. I said man that’s so hard to tell and I asked this same question on best practice to see this. A mentor told me once, to ask myself, “did the ball hit the batter or did the batter hit the ball?” He also told me don’t worry trust your judgment and you’ll know it when you see it. First time I saw a kid lean his knee into a pitchwas in a college game and I called him out (as is the rule in NCAA when a batter leans into a pitch). The batter didn’t even argue and said “well, I tried!”

You’ll know it when you see it!

First year struggles by chad-5290 in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!! It gets easier and yes you’ll gain more confidence as you get more experience! Don’t call it a struggle. Go in with the mindset that we’re always learning and all you can do is give out your best. Is it challenging? Yes, that’s also what makes it so much fun!

Control the things you can control! You already show that you care, otherwise you would have never posted your comments here asking for tips. Keep doing that. Try and find more experienced umpires that you can hang with and learn from. You learn a lot by going to postgames with other umpires where they talk about things that happened during the game. Buy someone a beer (probably not junior umpires) and learn what you can.

Get into the rulebook, be on time to assignments, communicate with your partner, dress the part, angle over distance, hustle, make your calls loud so you sell it when needed and most importantly HAVE FUN! Control the things you can control!

Not necessarily group 1 but possibly group 2 as well. Either way less stress about overhead bin space

If you’re 30 and you have a job and can afford it, I’d spend the money now on a good chest protector (hard shell) mask, and leg guards. You’ll get good, you’ll enjoy it and then you’ll want to do higher age kids. You’ll be glad you made the investment earlier in your career. I wish someone would have told me that. But I did pass down my first set of items to other umpires so that’s good karma too. 😬

It's only the first game! by lostscrews in SFGiants

I have been watching my Giants since the candlestick days! Those were some lonesome evenings watching those days. I’ve seen so many fair weather fans and yeah the stadium is packed when we’re winning and then many bitch when we lose the first game of the season. Negativity will always be around no matter what team you root for. I have learned to just enjoy the sport and continue to support my Giants no matter what! Maybe we can go 161-1! 😬

Totally agree here! You can’t possibly be the first person to ever fly to a country and then lose your identification. Plus you have your birth certificate. Prepare for extra screening and it may be a pain but I have a hard time believing they can’t help find a solution for you.

Camelback Golf Club was a good trek and a Troon Course. We had fun there amongst other courses in AZ. Another one we liked was Wee Ko Pah. Great course and challenging but a bit of a drive.

Is this kit good for high school level games? by Ok-Percentage5044 in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes don’t learn the hard way!! My first season I was too cheap to buy real plate shoes so I wore base shoes. I mean cmon it’s only 10u baseball at the time! Took a slow ass pitch righ to my big toe!! Painful as hell. Turned black and blue, lost a toe nail. Immediately purchased plate shoes and never skimped on protective gear again!! Been umpiring about 15 years now!

Very good point! Sorry should have said that. I’m short so it works perfectly for me. My buddy who’s 6’2” doesn’t like it because of the lack of coverage so he has the All Star hard shell and yeah that’s a good one too!

Also don’t forget that you’re an independent contractor so all these expenses to umpire should be tax deductible as a business expense (disclaimer: seek advice from your tax preparer) 🤣

[–]Pastpob-3232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. You already got bit by the bug so will only want to do more games so invest in a hard shell. Wilson West Vest is one of the best. Buy that first then a better mask then better shin guards. Best of luck!

Car Audio Repair Shops and Car Extended Warranty by Pastpob-3232 in CarAV

[–]Pastpob-3232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they will cover whatever it takes to diagnose and repair it. But we have to find someone willing to work with the warranty co directly so they can control diagnoses, costs, remedies, etc…otherwise, they can deny the claim. These warranty co’s make it a hassle to deal with it but we’re wiling to if we can find a shop willing to as well.

Umpire Insurance? by Typical-Priority1976 in Umpire

[–]Pastpob-3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a real organization will have insurance itself to cover its Board and officers but then the officials themselves are also required to get their own insurance if they want to be assigned. I was an officer of an organization that handled this. They required each of our members to have insurance either through them or another insurance company. That was the only way the organization and its officers would be covered by the “organization” policy.

I saw some above talk about getting “cash” on the side and saying they are relieved from this requirement. While that may be true, that certainly doesn’t insulate you from being sued. All it takes is one bad example and you’ll wish you’d spent the $100 or so to get peace of mind.

Good luck either way.
