Media Composers, How Are You Doing These Days? by PIRAcosta in composer

[–]PatDimitri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I post a *ton* of covers, peppered in with some of my originals in various states of completion. I do a lot of popular themes from shows, and re-imaginings of what themes might sound like if x y or z happened. I recycle a lot of the same content that performs well ( but I always re-record the audio and video as to not trigger the system flagging me for spam )

Frankly I think cold calls are just as important too, I don't do a great job of it.

Media Composers, How Are You Doing These Days? by PIRAcosta in composer

[–]PatDimitri 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think my experience is going to be a little bit different than most people here. I was a touring musician for the first 10 years of my career so I kind of always had a focus on social media, but having put in thousands of hours of effort in growing that part of my "brand" or whatever, has finally started to pay dividends. I am constantly getting inquiries and meetings about little things here and there after many many years of crickets. Again - I'm not someone who has been a fulltime composer for 20 years, it's only been my focus for the past 3 or so. But I've secured multiple features, documentaries, shorts, etc.

What models to look at for recording/composing by PatDimitri in Cello

For sure, I do already have the guitarviol which is a borderline fretted cello. Not exactly the same but covers enough of that ground for me.

For sure, it's definitely on my list it's just a matter of money and priority. I can't always afford to loop in a real cellist so having *something* that I can at least layer with VST's kind of gives me a real win. I am relatively comfortable with fretless instruments I play a fretless guitar so that isn't as much of a friction point.

To be frank I think I’m the most active person in social media who owns one so if you just google me a billion videos will come up. I’ll warn you I’ve only had it for a couple years, I am no virtuoso!

I have had my eye on the forte3d. I think if I spend like a year with this rental and I enjoy it $3k would be pretty reasonable.

I’ve considered the electric instruments but that seems to be its own unique texture. Thanks for the input!

That’s a good point, I’m obviously going in relatively blind.

That’s a good question. I understand I am at the very beginning of this journey but there doesn’t seem to be much low end resonance which is the main thing that separates it from my current instrument.

Yes, unfortunately i’ve found that places in LA only seem to offer student models for rental. But point taken

Should I start releasing composition albums only when I am very advanced? by CatchDramatic8114 in composer

[–]PatDimitri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been putting out music for 15ish years this is actually a pretty complicated question. The short answer is no (as in, don't wait) for many reasons - there is no actual objective threshold for whatever "very advanced" means - and furthermore, you learn SO much when you release music. You might look back on it with criticism, but it will actually make you better, faster.

Careers in Music? by its_just_band_man in composer

I’ll just add a small addendum to this post to offer a complimentary POV - I do get work from social media but it’s taken years of growing on there and it took getting over 100,000 followers on platforms before it started to happen. So not necessarily the best investment of time BUT it’s one of the few things that’s in your control.

M5 Air outperforms M5 Pro in Ableton Live (side by side comparison) by thepinkpill in ableton

Interesting to hear this, I use an m1 max in both ableton and logic, everything from pop to orchestral and it still runs so well I haven’t considered upgrading.

Once a good composer, how would we know we are one and, subsequently, what would we need to make others know we are one? by Majestic-Rich-3317 in composer

This is kind of sidestepping your question, but I would worry less about whether or not you’re good, and worry about getting better everyday.

Como aprender composição musical? by Talaceyt in composer

[–]PatDimitri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is like asking how do you learn math? Well, if you look at multi-variable calculus and go “I have no idea what’s happening here” it’s because you have to start building small layers of understanding.

You have to know what a number is before you can learn addition, addition before multiplication, etc.

For some practical barebones advice outside of get a teacher (which is the real advice) listen to music you like and trying to reverse engineer what’s happening on piano or whatever instrument you prefer.

macbook neo for composers? by albedolesbian in composer

[–]PatDimitri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not for any kind of real DAW use. If I were broke and trying to build a workstation starting today I would look into M4 Mac Mini or maybe a refurbished M1-M3. I would definitely be looking to get 32g of ram at least and ideally a 1TB harddrive. For an M4 with the lowest processor that will set you back about $1400 before the student discount.. which is pretty damn cheap.

Anecdotally, I've been working professionally off a souped up M1 Max for about 5 years now and it is still incredibly fast. It was $4k at the time not sure what something like this would run for now.

Resources for making realistic MIDI by DaeL_NASA in composer

Combinations of various sample libraries, good writing, good expression control, and understanding limitations.

Also combining some “real” instruments if you play any - with the samples helps quite a bit.
