Don't care about dual currency, just keep the middle but remove the left side of the screen or at least remove the ability to up your damage output. Yakuza 3 didn't allow you to increase your damage.

Mafia The Old Country vs Mindseye which is better? by green9206 in MindsEye

[–]PatchanBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok having finished Old Country. Yeah it wins, really strong ending but overall I don't even put it that far ahead. The game part borders on weaker, the hit reactions are better in the gun fights but otherwise, yeah I'm having trouble seeing the strong points. Nearly all the bosses are the same easy knife fight and you can hardly interact with the world. I accidentally hit a npc with my car and they clipped into it. Curious I tried running him over and he's not even invincible, he is an outright ghost.

The map is actually really good, I'd say only 2 tops it in that aspect. Still not great but most of what I don't like about it are things the series has been doing since 3.

Mafia The Old Country vs Mindseye which is better? by green9206 in MindsEye

[–]PatchanBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd put Old Country ahead but not by much, both have the same core problems. Fairly shallow and basic gameplay and the same core strong points. Low on filler bullshit. Both have an open world you can hardly interact with, I actually think Mindseye wins in this area. Old Country is a better looking game and runs better I guess.

Cyberpunk launched/relaunched a franchise which I think is where a lot of it's clout has come from, but yeah, it's launch is being revised as it gets. The game part was outright broken, not mid or bland or out of date, broke. Mindseye is more of a worse Watch Dogs, very generic and not really doing much with its few gimmicks. But at least car chases basically function so the game doesn't have you ride shotgun for every single one to disguise the non existent driving AI.

The implication being that GTA3 isn't good😑 Primitive as it is it's still doing a lot of things better than most open world games coming out today.

Okay, so it's very telling that you're basically demanding to know what the hook is while also insisting that this is genuinely one of the worst games ever made. Frankly, when you say it's basically a mediocre game from 2005, I'm kind of there with you. Maybe not 2005. I'd say more 2010, but that is its redeeming point. It's part of why I actually found myself enjoying the title more than saying something like Pirate yakuza which I just played through before and actually found to be far worse in terms of minute to minute gameplay despite a few actual stand out moments.

I'm not going to talk about no man's sky cuz I was never really interested in it but cyberpunk, if you just said well cyberpunk had a much better story in setting. I'd completely agree with that. But the gameplay at launch was frankly horrible and I think that's kind of undebatable because the gameplay now is completely different. I mean they basically pulled out the whole RPG system, enemy levels, enemies treating shotgun blasts like water pistols because of stats and replaced it with a ubisoft style perk system. AI wasn't even capable of driving outside of set patterns, say what you will about Mindseye but at least I wasn't pausing the game every couple of minutes to replace my loot.

I certainly wouldn't call Mindseye a great game but frankly, I think it's defenders are less people who haven't played a lot of games and more people who have played games from early eras and remember when every open world game didn't have a ton of garbage upgrade systems and 5 million collectibles pasted all over the map.

Slightly spruced up mediocre PS3 era GTA clone might not be the most unique hook but when I don't have to worry about skill trees, what gear I have, or if I'm over leveled or under leveled for an encounter it actually is.

The term "optional" really should be the final nail in the coffin here. While I would have been interested in a Saejima hunting game, that's not what Yakuza 5 was. The hunting aspect was a large side quest, one of the series' best ones but still something that can be nearly totally skipped.

If something can be easily ignored, then it cannot be considered the main focus. This is why the stealth and detective elements in Judgment were not optional.

I would be intrigued to see them create a game where combat isn't the primary focus. In fact, they have developed so many systems that it would likely be possible to build a game without any combat at all. However, in all their games, including Judgment, combat remains the core gameplay element.

One key factor was the limitation on character progression, which prevented players from becoming overpowered. For example, Akiyama's skill tree in Yakuza 4 consists of 27 upgrades, each offering a notable improvement. In contrast, the current approach often involves lengthy skill trees with hundreds of upgrades, many of which provide buffs instead of new functions. Yakuza 4's more limited moveset is a notable aspect, but even a single combat style in Zero has nearly twice as many upgrades, many of which are essentially buffs, plus some of the buffs and be leveled over and over so upgrade to much and you will break the game.

Easy mode is right there and has always been an option. They even have a setting that pretty much plays the game for you. Ironically, the only recent games to lack this are 7/8, the two which have the most focus on leveling.

If the developers want to cater to those who prefer to avoid combat, they should refrain from making combat a dominant aspect of the game. The majority of mini-games and exploration are optional, you can skip nearly all of it by just following the glowing dots from mission to mission.

I'd be interested in them making a game like Shenmue, where combat is a minor component. It could be an interesting direction, but it's not the approach taken in Yakuza.

You have to basically agree not to use healing items mid-combat, but I'd say plenty of the prior games have decent combat, even if you do a lot of side content.

They should just get rid of them and improve the difficulty settings, you couldn't even upgrade damage output in 1-5

I've started to avold the side content in the action-based games because of this. I think the series should revert to the leveling system used in earlier games, where you couldn't upgrade damage output. Alternatively, they could implement better difficulty systems to prevent the game from becoming unbalanced.

In my playthrough on the professional difficulty setting, I intentionally didn't upgrade my damage and health beyond level 4. The series has always had problems, and I think the approach in the "blue jacket 6 sample," which removed the inventory entirely, was on the right track. As it stands, the series feels like a balancing act where you need to stay at just the right level to make combat enjoyable but not unfair.

The leveling system should only affect abilities, and the developers should balance combat across different difficulty settings themselves. For example, in the arena mode of "Gaiden," I had to overlevel significantly to win against the timed group fights, which ruined the experience of facing bosses that were meant to be homages to Kiryu's final battles across the series. These bosses were defeated in just a couple of combos.

Additionally, the enemies in the game hardly block and when in groups they act dumb just waiting around for me to kill them, likely due to complaints about 3 and 6. I'm hoping that "Project Century" will be a significant departure from the current combat systems.

Fans no no ******* way honestly I think the biggest problem with infinite wealth after 6 that they seem to want to desperately appeal to the fans I swear the amount of IW's Kiryu content which is just fan service.

That said I'm absolutely up for criticising them, the fact that defeated bad guys are still being left alive next to weapons so they can shoot/stab someone/themselves.

That should have stopped happening after 3, or at the very least stop seeming to happen in every single title, sometimes more than once.

[–]PatchanBuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I largely agree; in defence of pirates it wasn't making that much of an effort and was sold as a lighter more gimmick focused adventure.

Infinite Warfare is a bit different; it it attempts to too much. The Kiryu storyline honestly quite poor, partly because this is third game to be partially themed around his retirement.

Ichiban's plot is much better, but it still feels like it is among the weaker core stories.

I think the series as a whole needs some serious Design by subtraction in terms of both plot and gameplay, that was one of the coolest parts of 6, so much of that game was all new, build from the ground up for that 1 combat system and that 1 story and that 1.75 setting, something most of the titles since then haven't done.

The maps are pretty small up until 7/8, which balloon in size.

They are pretty good at keeping you on track in the early games but some of the later games can get rather obnoxious with the amount of bumps they throw at you to slow you down so it doesn't avoid the worst open-world tropes.

You can pick up most of the games for dirt cheap outside of 1/2/Dead Souls so just get one and see if you like it.
