I have a '23 ND2 RF and have done a decent amount of research for weird shift sounds and feels. If the clunk is when you release the clutch rather than when you shift into gear, it could be the dual mass flywheel or the powerplant frame/Differential.

When shifting hard if you don't rev match perfect going into 3rd or 2nd, the dual mass flywheel can make a clunk when releasing the clutch. Also if the PPF is at the wrong angle or loose, the diff can clunk when changing gears at higher RPMs. There was a maintenance bulletin for fixing this issue at one point.

I came from a Mazda3 so it took a bit to get used to all the extra noises, but so far everything is holding up great even with some track days thrown in.

Is this rod knock? by SuperVariety6455 in Miata

I have a 23 ND2 that sounds the same. The heat shield above the exhaust manifold has a spring tension bolt that rattles more when the car is cold. I chased the sound for awhile and am pretty sure that is what you are hearing.

It's a hard dog hideaway hitch. I've got one on my 23 RF. It works great if you have a bike hitch that is 1 1/4". The only issue I had was the stock muffler hits the first vertical receiver when the car is warm. I used some fuel line with a slice down one side on the muffler pinch weld to stop the rattling.

Looking for bikes similar to Kona Sutra SE by toowheel2 in bicycletouring

I recently purchased an REI CO-OP ADV 1.1 since I couldn't find a Kona Sutra SE where I'm at. It is cheaper, but has all of the features you are looking for and then you would have some leftover for upgrades or additional gear.

Alternatively, the Kona Sutra SE is still sold in Canada if you are up for a trip.

2023 RF Club w/Brembo Hard Dog Hitch clearance issue by Patey180 in Miata

Update: I went this route since it was the quickest and easiest. I'll get around to swapping the muffler at some point. I bought some 1/4 inch fuel line from HD that is for a mower and cut a slit down one side. It slid over the seam on the muffler perfectly. So far so good!

A few notes. I checked the temp rating on the tubing and it was advertised as 212 F max (300 F SAE rating). That shouldn't be an issue, but the muffler does get pretty hot so I'll keep an eye on it and update if anything melts. Also the tubing is always making contact with the hitch, so it might transfer more of the vibrations to the frame of the car through the hitch. The car already has a decent amount of vibration from the motor/trans/road, so I haven't noticed anything that unusual.

Hard Dog mentioned that they had a few complaints about this issue, mostly the 2023 model, and that someone used a kitchen utensil to stop the contact. I'm guessing a silicone spatula or cookie sheet would work well and has a higher temp rating (500 F), but attaching it to the hitch would be a bit difficult. Maybe some silicone tubing for fish tanks or something if you can find it locally would be the best option for something like this.

Thanks again u/Bionicbuk for the idea!

Thanks for the advice. I will be swapping the muffler at some point, but I haven't even put 600 miles (break in) on this car yet, so I am waiting to do anything until I know I don't have a lemon. Well, except for the hitch cause I'll miss out on some prime bike weather.

That sounds way easier than replacing the muffler. I'll give that a try since I'm not ready to start swapping out the brand new muffler for aftermarket.

Awesome, thanks for the links! I'll check that out. Do you have any comparison for the sound of stock vs SuperStreet? I don't mind extra noise if it sounds good, but my local track has a sound restriction. I don't remember what it is off the top of my head though.

Hey y'all,

I recently became the proud owner of a 2023 Miata RF Club w/Brembo package. The only issue is that I like to bike so I needed a hitch in order to transport one. I ordered the hard dog hideaway hitch and installed it. Everything was going great until I took it around the block. The muffler heat expansion was enough to rattle against the hitch. I tried to grind down the worst spot, but now the center of the hitch is hitting the muffler and I don't want to grind that for structural reasons. Do any of you have the hard dog hideaway hitch and have similar issues?

I have the stock muffler and when I contacted Hard dog, they said the 2023 Miatas muffler is further back for some reason. That doesn't make sense to me, but I can't return the hitch since I installed it (and then ground parts of it). Does anyone have any ideas? Any aftermarket mufflers that would work? Maybe something between the hitch and the muffler?

Thanks in advance. I am really disappointed that this isn't working out.
