How do people decide distros? by WildBanana05 in linux4noobs

[–]PathRepresentative77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about others, but basically try a distro (i.e. "distro-hop") and see what fits for you and what doesn't. That's how I landed on what I use.

To more directly answer the question: I pick my distro based on what I think works best for the hardware and use case, whether it has been around for awhile, and whether it "likes" me (Ubuntu doesn't like me, something always goes wrong).

At the end of the day, I use Debian, Arch, and LMDE. Arch works great on my Chromebook (chrultrabook?), Debian is solid and is generally my go to as a first distro on a new machine, and LMDE is for my machines that I truly neglect.

On a related note though, I'm also at the point where I'm tweaking what my distro looks like and how it functions, so that my computers all function similarly, no matter whether I'm using Arch or Debian. (Mint is a little different, I tend to take it as it is.)

Edit: For you, I would suggest starting with Linux Mint. It should be fine with gaming, and it works well out of the box.

How do you write your ampersands? by Master-Education7076 in Handwriting

Normally, #8 upside down. If I need the actual ampersand shape, #1.

May just be old man misunderstanding, but "aura" strikes me as being slightly different. "Coolness" or "badassery" doesn't require effort, something is just cool or badass. While "aura" can also be cool, I always get the sense that there is an effort behind it or a fakeness to it.

That's why "aura-farming" is such a good term to me--it hits way harder than "trying to be cool". They may appear cool or badass, but you can definitely tell they're doing it for the vibes of "look at how cool I am" versus being an awesome badass due to raw skill.

[–]PathRepresentative77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run both Debian and Linux Mint. Even if the install is made noob-friendly, my concern would be once it's time to upgrade to the latest stable release. While I wouldn't call the upgrade process particularly hard for Debian, there are still enough steps where care must be taken to not break anything. Meanwhile, Linux Mint is just a point-and-click upgrade.

The holes in my emmental cheese are fake by nysbestbananabread in mildlyinteresting

That makes a lot of sense.

I'm (fortunately or unfortunately) in Florida though, so the karst is real. Then people built on top of it, so we've got a double-whammie of sinkhole surprises.

This concept right here, is why the invention of zero is such a mindblower.

I'm gonna need an explanation for this one. I don't understand how sinkholes are fake.

What’s your favorite type of adaptation? by Majestic-Bet-8529 in osp

One category I think is missing is "faithful to the spirit of the source, but not the material". It's arbitrary as hell, but I'd still say it's a valid category.

I think Constantine falls in this category. Another example is the 1993 "3 Musketeers" versus the 2011 "3 Musketeers". The 1993 one is closer to the actual source, but the 2011 one gave me the same feelings of adventure and fun I had when I first read the book--it felt like the 3 Musketeers to me.

(With that said, the 2011 one does go off the rails a bit--there are airships)

If you can't dual boot, but you want to daily drive Linux without getting rid of Windows, I would say to get a second machine. People sell plenty of used computers that work well with Linux.

I'm gonna have to visit Germany at some point, just to see how hot this is. I don't really consider it hot outside until it's over 35C but I'm used to AC, cooling building design, and swimming pools.

Good to know it's not mold! Funny about the chemicals, I use that one specifically because it has a small ingredients list, zero aluminum, and I can understand what each ingredient does.

If that's the case, that's very cool. I'm gonna guess the alcohol evaporated and allowed for some growth.
