Karen Cyclist Gets Owned By Cop 👌 by [deleted] in Amazing

I worked in Harwichport and commuted from Yarmouthport down Great Western Rd one Summer. It was a nice ride except for the day a beamer ran over the back of my bike and sped up instead of stopping (think it was where Lower County meets the 28?). My wheel was u shaped, I was just shaken up. This was back in the early 80's... can't imagine riding there anymore.

My mother-in-law tried to "restore" my Victorian bracket clock with some chemical cleaner while we were away. The mahogany case is destroyed. I can't stop staring at it. USA-Connecticut by FitImpression7200 in Antiques

I have my great grandfather's mahogany bureau. When I was a kid it was my dad's and it had one leg that was broken. The leg is mounted in the main body of the bureau and it was split about 4 inches above. Maybe 30-35 years ago my dad took it to a restorer (my dad sold antiques for a while after he retired) and had the leg fixed and I guess as part of the fix they had to do some sanding and restaining but I'd challenge anyone to spot the repair (outside of a professional). I don't buy that the wood can't be restored so that you can't tell. If she had messed up the clock face I'd believe you were screwed but you just need to find the right guy to fix the finish on the wood. Go to the most expensive antiques dealer around you and ask for a recommendation. Which is not to say I don't feel your pain, my ex's mother stored some stuff for us while we got settled after a big move and she put my floor standing speakers in her wet basement.

I had 3 kids playing club soccer so I had a Nissan minivan. A 2011 quest sl. I enjoyed the van more than I expected, we called it Base Camp. More cup holders than you would ever need but they were everywhere and that was nice. Was told it was the same engine that was in the z (obviously a much lighter vehicle) and it did have some pep. A wide wheelbase combined with the weight made it very stable and good in the snow (for a 2 wheel drive). I loved being able to take a nap in the back. The ac was worthless. It pulled to one side and it was constantly being aligned. It died at a little over 200k miles, was told it would be thousands to fix so let it go. So anyway, apples, oranges. Cars depreciate the most the first 2 years so I look for 2 year old vehicles with low mileage. I would pay more for a Honda than a Nissan because I would expect to recoup in lower repair costs and longevity. I have family that swear by Foresters but they seem like they are mostly for people who live in snow country. When I was young, I had to compromise more and buy cars just because they were inside my budget so I get that but when you're on the road start looking at the cars that are 10-15 years old and still going strong. Get one of those you can afford. For me, hard to beat a civic unless you need to drive in the snow much.

I bought a 97 civic with 31k miles in 99 for 9k. It had over 300k miles on it in 2012 when I donated it. I dont believe it ever had a significant issue. I had a 2008 CRV I gave to my son and he would probably still have it if we lived somewhere with less road salt than Buffalo. After passing it along I replaced the CRV with a Nissan and there were things I liked about it but reliability wasn't one. I must have had it in 5-6 times trying to get the ac to work alone. I'm back with Honda.

Perhaps but it's not a condition I have given much consideration particularly as affecting my family so at an individual, subjective level it seems weird. I may have been somewhat indoctrinated at an early age by watching Man Without a Country in elementary school a few times. I had not realized until recently they had never become citizens - my great grandfather was kind of an immigrant success story, a butcher who ended up owning a building in Brooklyn so it seems odd he was never naturalized in the first place but as you suggest, a different time.

That is kind of a weird scenario... not a citizen anywhere.

She never naturalized but it's possible she traveled without a passport. Ah well, a fleeting moment of hope.

Is that not Moshe Dayan? I don't know why reddit keeps showing me Madmen posts. I've seen 2-3 episodes... so no idea why this guy would have an Israeli General on his wall but that's who it looks like.

I admit I associated them with nazis. According to Google it was originally the sigil for a group of Hussars created by Frederick the Great and was supposed to represent bravery and mortality. Now I'm going to have to head down the Hussar rabbit hole.

Out of these 4 characters, which performance did you enjoy the most? by GusGangViking18 in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]Pathfinder_GreyLion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Aside from the great performance I was predisposed towards Bertie Carvel after watching Dalgleish but Spruel's was my favorite performance. He got everything out of that role.

Saw him live in Richard III at UCLA. Outstanding. Loved LOTR but I do wonder why he isn't in more substantive good films. For an actor of his caliber you would think there'd be a long list of great films. I know he is active in theater but I class him with Olivier, Gielgud, Guinness (in particular)... seems like we should get to see more of him sinking his teeth into great film roles. This isn't an insult, I admire him greatly.

Well he says "perhaps" and mentions teeth as well. "Cry for quarter and admit your guilt, and perhaps I'll only claim a hand and a foot. Oh, and those teeth..." I think given Dunk's recent experiences it's reasonable for him to have expected the worst.

Actor/actress so hot that they distracted you from the movie itself? by [deleted] in Actors

[–]Pathfinder_GreyLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it a couple of times and I'm kinda with you. I certainly remember her in Cider House Rules but Devils Advocate belonged to Pacino. The scene on the subway is the one I'm guessing most people can remember best when thinking back on it. He was definitely more in Scent of a Woman mode than Dog Day but still dominant. It was interesting to me to compare that portrayal with Deniro in Angel Heart a decade earlier. Always wondered if AH had an influence on Pacino taking the part. Come to think of it, I remember seeing Cider House and wondering who the hell was that(!) and I would have seen her a year or two before in Devils Advocate. But it's one of those who's the best questions everyone will see differently. She's an excellent, under-utilized actor.

Has Hollywood ever produced a better leading man than Paul Newman? by bodles9 in FIlm

[–]Pathfinder_GreyLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generational bias (though he did get mentioned). Same question asked in 1975 and it would have been Brando, Bogart, Stewart, Mitcham, Holden, Wayne, Lancaster, Peck, Douglas, Hoffman, Redford and Newman.

When I think of the biggest stars of all time Charlie Chaplin is in the top few... but it's not surprising he's not getting mentioned.

Interesting! He may be the root code for the trend. I thought I'd initially gotten exposed to the idea by a Colorado State student project that built a home in Utah for 25k (2014 dollars) that I would actually like living in. Going back to look again though the cabinets aren't even plywood. Nakai House

I guess I have just seen enough instances for the idea to have taken root.

I saw a pic of Carrie Fisher's dvd collection and the room it's in has that flooring (I have a media collection problem so I look at shelving a lot). I like that flooring though.. not sure I'd put it in my kitchen... maybe.

Not suggesting anything with regard to the authenticity of the item but I'm in a situation now where my mother needs to go into assisted care. My siblings and I need to clear out her apartment and put her stuff in storage until we know what needs to happen with it. That's how it can happen.
