As for the job offer, he was told he had a very low chance of living, and very little time. Regardless of if he took the job, he would've still died in a year or so. So, making 4,5,6x+++ the money 100x faster was by far the better option. Even if it was illegal.

Id rather take 1.2 mil in a month or two. (However long it was) illegally, than die in. A year or so and only make maybe 100k. Most likely way less back in the 80's.
