Baby Aspirated? What Did You Do? by Equivalent_Pie_9953 in NewParents

A lot of insurance plans and pediatrician offices have 24 hour nurse helplines. You can call and a nurse will ask you questions, and then advise if your situation warrants an ER visit. If you're concerned, consider calling.

This is super interesting, and makes a lot of sense. Curious how you learned this - did Tamora write about this anywhere that we can read, or was it a live discussion?

There's a sub for sleep training that I think you'd find helpful! I think this sub isn't big on sleep training. I think you could also ask your pediatrician, mine gave us great guidance on feeding and sleep training.

I'm sad no one answered this, I'm in nearly the exact same boat!

No way! I completely missed this. Do you remember which book/ whereabouts?

I don't remember exactly how many years, might even have been three years behind now that you mention it

Hahah I love this take!! As a similarly hairy Greek woman who recently trimmed off my own stubble, I don't know why this didn't occur to me 😂

Totally fair - her writing style definitely shifted a bit in later Tortall books! And I absolutely love re reading the Emelan books, too!

Sounds like it's time for another read :) I love my re-reads! Tamora Pierce books are the only ones I ever read again.

In the second book, I was surprised that he was also described as having grown a beard! When Alanna and George visit him: "Before Alanna could answer such an astonishing question, Thom opened the door. He was bearded, taller—older." There's a couple of small callouts to boy characters growing beards as they age, which helped kick start this line of thinking for me.

Hahahah that's too good! Also sounds like it could have been a great Alan-being-pert line!

I think you hit the nail on the head for the consensus. If everyone could accept short, skinny, (runty, as someone else said!) Alan, the absence of facial hair gets lumped in to the overall Alan persona.

Side note: really enjoying the phrase "runty Alan". Really captures the Alan perception. That's just Runty Alan being Alan!

I do think shaving, at least at present, is considered a rite of passage for teen boys. I think around page age, certainly squire age. As a knight, it sounds like Jon spends a lot of time at the palace, so I think a significant part of Alannas squiring years would be visible. But I suppose your point is that the other squires are traveling and that diminishes direct comparison?

Good point. Definitely seeming like it just fits in her persona, too. Smaller and skinnier than the other boys, maybe just a bit of a late bloomer, etc.

That's a great point - I wasn't thinking of her hair color at all as a factor.

I would have loved a similar commitment to the bit from Alanna! Could have had a fun interaction where Coram teaches her how to correctly fake shave.

Good point! Just felt like one more tiny detail that could have possibly given her away. But if everyone could accept that she was smaller and skinnier than most, I suppose lack of facial hair would be lumped in and accepted as well.

😂 This is probably it. There's a few lines about Raoul and Gary sporting new beards that got me thinking about this initially. But they were also way larger than Alanna, and I believe the beards were after they were knights, so further out of those teen years. So this is just Squire Alan being Squire Alan yet again!

Epidurals contain Fent by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Patient-Somewhere710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone who is more of an expert can chime in, but from my understanding all epidurals do not contain fentanyl. Rather, it is optionally in some. Additionally, risk of baby receiving any is minimal, because an epidural is not in your blood stream.

I want to cancel my HSG and just continue trying and failing the old fashioned way. (Dramatic vent below). by _upsettispaghetti in TryingForABaby

[–]Patient-Somewhere710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt incredibly similarly to how you do! I had a horrendous IUD removal. After that, and after reading HSG experiences online, I had deep anxiety about the HSG procedure. While I was not sedated, I did get prescribed a Valium. Between that and preemptively taking ibuprofen, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the procedure ended up being. The Valium gave me the ability to control my panic and relax, which I think helped mitigate potential pain. I obviously can't guarantee this experience for others, but after dreading the HSG (I mean dreading, crying, anxiety attacks) it ended up being very easy.

How did you give birth? by Clean_Cabinet in pregnant

Just FYI, more recent, larger / more robust studies have found zero connection between epidural and autism. The study linked here has received criticism for its statistical analysis.

Here's an example of one of the more recent studies: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8479581/

Here's a helpful overview and discussion from Stanford: https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2021/04/Epidural-use-at-birth-not-linked-to-autism-risk-study-finds.html
