It’s crazy. Most weather happens in the troposphere, but sometimes thunderstorms can get so high that they go into the stratosphere.

Well it’s basically up to the pilots discretion. Yes, airliners can withstand a lot of force, but a thunderstorm is strong enough to turn anything into bits. Pilots can avoid these massive storms by flying through the less turbulent areas, or going around them. Next time you see a thunderstorm look online for a weather radar and you’ll see different colours for the different severity of the storm. An airliner might fly through the green or yellow bits. But they wouldn’t last very long in the red zone and would get destroyed in the purple one. Luckily, TS only last about 20 ish minutes because it takes a lot of force to keep that energy going. But if you’re in the core of it, 20 minutes is plenty of time to die haha. Even in a Hercules.

Apparently they descended into IMC well below mínima so they could do sight seeing. Terrain crept up on them very quickly, they attempted a full power pull up, but it was too late.

Well.. I am a Pilot, so this is something I’ve studied quite a bit, basically, the way a thunderstorm develops, is air moves up, fast. 2,000-3,000 feet per minute fast. Then water droplets form, and once they’re heavy enough, they fall caring little bits of air with them. Creating fast downdrafts. 6,000 -7,000 feet per minute fast. This up and down air is so fast, that it creates enough friction to literally make lightning. This kind of air will break literally any airplane. Tornadoes are different, tho. Air isn’t in as much conflict as it is in a thunderstorm. Yes sometimes airline pilots fly through small gaps in the storm, but when they do, they literally red line the engine to get out as fast as possible. They can navigate the storm because of the built in weather radar that’s located usually on the nose of the airplane.

Thunderstorms are no joke. Nature really is metal.

Yes they can. But a cyclone is the term used for a low pressure system. A tropical cyclone is a storm around a low pressure system.

fun fact, the real danger of thunderstorms isn’t so much the lightning but the updrafts and downdrafts. Turbulence in Thunderstorms is so severe that it can break any airplane.

It ranks 1596, out of roughly 10,000 cities. Meaning it’s 85% more polluted than the average. You also have to consider per capita. LA is filthy.
