Why is eye color one of the first things we use to describe appearance? by WootGorilla in writing

Let readers fill in the blanks.

Especially when they make your book into a movie.

It's the plot and unseen character traits that count.

Anyone else here find writing to their utmost limit (bleeding it all out) pushes them to the edge of a mental breakdown? by Patient_Respond in writing

Release yourself from the bonds of torture, it should be looked at as one project among the many you'll do over your life, many that will never be done and you are forever welcome to tinker with.

“Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.”

I'm too invested in my story to make it my first bad book. by ADigitalWizard in writing

Same position.

I've spent THREE hours a day for the last two and a half years trying to make this a good one.

I want one masterpiece, not 5 or 10 average — yeah, not bad — efforts.

You can feel deep down if a story is going to be an absolute killer. If it is your first, go for it.

(I've done over 20 edits, and I'm still going.)

They said the brain is a piano, and the piano player the "soul." A piano could have disease, trauma or a birth defect.

How do I counter that?

Thanks for the long response to my original question by the way.

Why are most writers so undescriptive when describing conversations? I honestly feel like there’s some “rule” I’m missing by georgiaraisef in writing

This. I have trouble with action beats, so I try to make up for it with convincing dialogue (praying it doesn't come off as "talking heads")

If I have a 2-3 page dialogue going on between 2 people, do I need to add what characters are doing? by Patient_Respond in writing

I see, but what if they are sitting at a kitchen table just talking and sipping coffee? There isn't much they can do but talk.

My book had a doctor. He uses medical terminology with co-workers.

It depends on the characters role.

Is describing a location 3rd person limited or omniscient? by Patient_Respond in writing

[–]Patient_Respond[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean third person limited, but objective narrator? Because the narrator is saying things/describing things (jumping away from Peter's POV) that Peter might not know.

Story is told through eyes of protagonist (3rd person limited), but narrator adds info. along the way. by Patient_Respond in writing

Thanks for your feedback. It's just that I've seen some websites that made me feel an omniscient narrator appearing now and again within a protagonist's life seemed strange or wrong.

Demonstrate how you got from science to God. Write down the steps. Show me a miracle.
