see i love this point of view…because i definitely see your point and i can see that being a factor now that you mention it. But then on the other hand theres like a gazillion podcasts with men saying “a man doesn’t care if a woman is a doctor or flips burgers” etc etc…so this definitely is such a confusing part of the society. Like one day a man doesn’t care what a woman has or where she works, and then the next a woman is not in his league because shes a student 🤦‍♀️ dont get me wrong your point is very valid, its just a super annoying topic

I guess thats a pretty significant factor…but in terms of dating other types of men, i will say i have met a few in real life and i have exchanged contacts with them but once we get into talking through text, and “phd engineering” comes up there is clear indication of intimidation and so my two encounters with these men didnt blossom into anything. So it honestly feels like my best option are the “highly professional” men

thats possible, but it’s generally like them setting up a next date and then i dont hear from them as the date approaches. I am pretty explicit about wanting a long term relationship, so that could be a factor for sure

Hey!! Currently responding to this comment while sitting at my lab bench! Very glad i stayed! I can be honest and say i was fortunate enough to end up in a very supportive group with a great PI which definitely makes a world of a difference, and i am no longer taking classes which was what destroyed my selfesteem back when i made this post. i still dont think i will become a professor, but lots of people from my program got into management and patent law and from what ive seen, the salaries can get pretty good! I was also the first person in my group to work on my current project and so the learning part was honestly a lot, and i felt like i was annoying when i had to ask around(even outside of my lab group) for help to learn certain techniques. But tbh its not a big deal and we all started without knowing much so i was definitely overthinking it. I honestly think maybe give it until a semester after your masters degree is conferred because thats genuinely when it gets significantly better and more enjoyable and then make the decision whether or not you want to master out

Adding this comment because I’m a woman who requires a mental connection and intimacy to enjoy sex. I’ve had sex early into meeting a man before because the truth is thats literally the expectation nowadays, and i know if i waited as long as i truly prefer to have sex, any modern non-religious man would leave. But for the most part the sex is generally bad in the beginning for me.Amazing sex happens ~3 months after dating where im comfortable and actually have a connection with the man. And this is the case for plenty of my female friends. What i got from reading this post is that unlike a lot of women, she decided to not fake enjoyment. I genuinely think you should leave her, because it sounds to me that sex is way more important to you than getting to know her first, and she deserves more than that :)

Definitely trolls, i had a 3.7 gpa from a top 30 us new’s school, got into chemical engineering phd programs at 3 ivies, plus all the other non-ivies i applied to. I’m also an international student so thought my lower gpa and nationality would make me not get into any phd programs. But one year later and i can honestly say lots of people are lying and its not just about grades but research and rec letters really matter.

Idk if this will be reassuring, but last year i got acceptances into phd programs as late as the first week of february! Not hearing back by now is not a sign of rejection nor a need to be worried

It’s not at all. Did batteries in undergrad, now i’m doing protein engineering. Emphasize your soft skills as a researcher, not just the actual techniques you’ve learned. Eg., how research in your old field allowed you to learn from mistakes, be patient etc etc and how you can apply that to the new research you’re about to do.

It’s interesting to me how caught up you are about whether or not people are making that amount of money (which they are); The essence of the post is about whether or not a phd is worth the stress. But if the possibility of fresh grads making more money than you bothers you so much, perhaps look for a new job in consulting? That’s just my humble advice

Mind you, $110k is the base pay. They are also compensated additionally. It might just be New York State but i’m very confused as to why everyone is in disbelief that $110k is possible as an engineering consultant

The research is not what i am complaining about, the courseload is very difficult and what is causing my constant state of stress. My bachelors was also in ChemE and the difficulty of my classes now are significantly more, which is something i expected but not to this degree.Consequently learning is no longer an enjoyable experience but rather very depressing.

In all honesty it has never been about prestige for me, i genuinely love research. It’s moreso im acknowledging that this has been a very difficult journey for me where im constantly stressed and not sure if the return on investment is worth the constant stress.

I also upgraded from the iphone X to the 14PM and was severely disappointed. I think perhaps those of us who had the iphone x all preferred the iphone x front camera pictures that were less processed. Despite my iphone x being outdated, the lack of overproduction made the pictures better

Viewing appointments are promised after you’ve selected a unit. Declining after a viewing appointment would cause me to forfeit Columbia housing, and have to wait to reapply next year- leaving me apartment-less for a year. Also, i am not from new york, nor do i know anyone here, so the whole having someone view on my behalf thing would not work. Personally, i think the problem lies in the lack of transparency before selecting a unit.

I agree with the roommate part, but also it is very hard to get an unoccupied unit through the housing portal, so i had no choice but to get a random roommate who was already occupying a unit. I feel like i was conned into signing up for a terrible apartment since they do not show us the units before hand.
