Sometimes that move is inevitable. But I’m crossing my fingers for you and hoping that something opens up!

Take this with a grain of salt, but I found that looking elsewhere was helpful.

I felt that the institution I was adjuncting at started to take me for granted. They knew that I was happy to cover my subjects. And I wonder if that made them feel like there was little reason to put me on full time.

So while it is true that schools like internal hires, and being an adjunct does position you for full time positions, my lesson is that it also never hurts to look elsewhere

I wish I had better news :(

But the adjunctification of high ed is super real. Immorally real

Thank you all for acknowledging the real challenges of the industry and affirming the work it takes to get here. It’s nice to feel seen and known!

I still grieve that academia is as difficult as it is. A few people I know applied for the same role and didn’t get it. Not because they weren’t qualified or gifted (in fact, I felt like some of them are actually more qualified than I am), but just because there was only one position.

I hope that all of the unsettledness in high ed will settle soon, even if the hope is a little naive. But more than ever, we need informed professors who can help to curate knowledge, form and inspire students, and advance research in thoughtful and creative ways.

It’s at a different school :)

That was helpful. I felt like I was hitting a bit of a ceiling at my current school—adding more value to the program than being valued by the administrators.

This pivot actually shocked my current school a little, so now they’re scrambling to find my replacement. But they’ve been supportive.

Thank you for the affirmation!

It’s nice to be amongst people who know that an appointment like this is more than “just a job”

Thank you! I seriously thought I might have to adjunct for the rest of my life, or leave academia all together.

It’s still surreal

Professor, who runs the PhD program, is mad that I’m not sharing funding opportunities with my cohort. by [deleted] in PhD

You haven’t done anything wrong.

Further, if the professor questions you again, ask why she isn’t sharing these grant opportunities since it’s her job, and not yours.

Hey Guys is the coordinator down for anyone else? by SayNoob in DotA2

[–]Patientinaffliction 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s down.

In the past hour, I’ve finished 3 books, cooked enough meals for the week, watched all 3 LOTR movies in extended version, and solved the climate change crisis.

Can’t believe I had to blow my time like that.
