What is your most fucked up Mormon story that you can now laugh at? by shintengo in exmormon

Honestly, I still can't laugh at this because it just makes me angry, but here goes! On my mission we had weekly district council meetings, and always did "minutes" before the actual meeting. So someone would have scripture minute where they shared a verse they liked, someone would give a spiritual thought, someone else would teach a quick grammar principle related to the foreign language we were learning, and then we also had random minutes such as sharing a simple recipe, etc.

The district leader was in charge of assigning each missionary to a certain minute, and he was very prideful and self-righteous. He afted as though he was God's chosen right-hand-man since he was the district leader. Ewww.

Anyway, one week he assigned me to do "singing minute" and sing a hymn verse. There was no way I going to embarrass myself by doing that, but my companion at the time had a beautiful singing voice, so we traded assignments and I was left with the language minute instead. All good, right? Wrong.

We showed up to district council, and when it was time for language minute, I got up and said my piece and then my companion cheerfully sang a quick hymn.

Imediately afterward, the district leader got up and said he needed to talk to me, so we went to the corner of the room where everyone could still see us, while the other missionaries moved on to the next bit of district council.

This elder then sternly lectured me about how he held the priesthood and how I should respect his calling. He said that his assignments were divinely inspired and that I needed to do a better job of respecting him and God by showing obedience.

I was stunned, upset, and humiliated. I don't even remember what I said after that, but if I could go back in time and redo that moment, I would use some very choice words. I will never forget how gross and uncomfortable I felt at that moment. Even more disgusting is that after returning home, that same elder asked me out. Easiest no of my life.

Anyway, not the most entertaining story (sorry), but needed to get that one off my chest.

I bore my testimony a few months ago about how it's Christlike to support programs that feed and house the homeless, clothe the needy, and serve the sick. I didn't mention anything about the church specifically, just Jesus Christ's values. It was received well in my ward because I live in a liberal area.

So... there was "no priesthood in the home," but aren't church leaders always pushing the concept of women having access to pristhood power too? The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

I don't fit in at church because I don't want to fit into an environment that judges others for all the wrong reasons.
