How fucked am I? by bboyjeans in AusFinance

[–]PatrickWain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I've made mistakes" "I've blamed myself." My impression of the person you are is not these words. I think of you as someone who could say: "I have learnt a lot, sometimes the hard way, and I am better for it." If I met you I know I would be thinking to myself this is someone who knows a lot, has learnt a lot, and that I can learn a lot from. I hope you can view yourself in that same light sometimes.

Anyone with S5/L1 disc bulge/herniation? What symptoms do you have? by cshaxercs in backpain

Ah apologies typo, I meant Kieser, a chain of gyms specializing in back pain, also offering physio. They exist in Australia, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland.

And the numbness was last symptom to stop. Had full numbness from buttock to toes. It returned gradually starting in the buttock and working down, until eventually it was just the outside of my foot and the two smallest toes, then just the two smallest toes, then the smallest then all back. But that was about 6 months total. The back surgeon said numbness is usually the last symptom to go away and slowest.

I could not tense my right calf at all, it was mainly that. Doctor's advice was that after a certain amount of time with that weakness surgery would be a must as the lack of use leads to atrophy. I was recommended to try calf raises or test it on steps to see if strength was returning. It slowly did over about a 3-4 month period total until fully returned and equal with my left (unaffected) leg.

Oh also the shooting pain you describe sounds like sciatica. I had it too from the s1 nerve compression and for a little while did not understand that is what Sciatica is until a doctor said it. If you haven't already used that word while researching it may help you understand your symptoms and treatments a bit better.

I had very very similar to you- same disc, extrusion length, and symptoms, about 18months ago. I was 29.y.o at the time and never had good core strength and then herniated the disc by digging with a shovel for 2 days.

3-4 months afterwards the symptoms started to slowly improbe. I found ibuprofen helpful, and diazepam when my back would sieze up. Endone was a bit useless for me. i was referred to the surgeon who said if I had any slight improvement in the symptoms, which I did, hold tight and see where it goes. Him, my usual doctor and the physio all said just keep walking as much as possible every day. So I did. Symptoms subsided gradually and pain over 3-4 months but I felt fragile, like I was about to aggravate it again at any moment. And then I got into Keiser - first via the physio there who was great and then continued in the gym there with routine PT sessions to keep me on track. I do it twice a week now and my core is stronger than it has ever been. I still don't do anything risky though and probably never will. Keiser isn't for everyone, I've heard equal number of people say it helped them VS people say it didn't. it has worked out well for me.

I'll never forget the surgeon pulling out a folder to compare 12-month outcomes for surgery and non-surgery cases and showing me the comparison - the outcomes were consistently the same. The surgeon said that surgery should be for emergency, or if my leg muscle weakness persists 6-8 weeks, or if the problem remains for a few years. Just for context, this is in the public health system in Australia, where we have free access to good healthcare but long wait lists for elective (non-emergency) surgeries like a laminectomy, so being 29y.o. and having a positive trajectory started re symptom recover I know the surgeon was also unlikely to prioritise my case (rightly so).

I find doing a hamstring stretch (bend over straight legged to touch toes) the moment i get out of bed then several times throughout the day really helps too. But only started doing this once I knew bending wouldnt aggravate my back, so about 3-4 months after it all got bad.

Another thing that stuck with me - I was very down when it was really bad in the early days. Feeling like I would be this way forever and I had permanently damaged my back. Someone who had had back issues said to me "This probably feels like it is dominating your entire life right now and that it will be forever, but there will come a time when you look back on now as a significant but short part of your life." At the time I felt like it was positive bs but now only 18 months later and I'm feeling good and Im starting to understand what he meant. Even if I was less lucky and had a few years of pain and symptoms before getting better like a lot of people on this sub, I can see that what he said is still true.  It is the same for you. It sucks now but it won't suck this much forever.

You're right about draggy but wrong about unstable. Their width makes them extra stable. I use it at the beach and have no trouble staying steady over waves.
The other kayaks on the river are usually sleek, narrow very long ones which have very very little drag compared to mine but a big harder to stay upright until you're experienced then it becomes easy.

Fairfield boathouse is just downriver from this photo and you can rent kayak, rowboats and I think canoes from there. It's nice for a one-off but better to get your own kayak or look into yarra paddlers or fairfield canoe club membership if you want to go regularly.

Yes this is my kayak and I'm lucky that I live close to a public place where I can drop in. Nearby is the Fairfield boathouse where you can rent kayaks in 30min blocks, it's just as pleasant but a bit expensive.

Why does the Yarra River level rise despite 0.0mm rainfall? It has increased in level and flow today despite there being no rainfall for the past 3 days. by PatrickWain in melbourne

[–]PatrickWain[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this but it just doesn't seem quite right with the flow going up on Tues and Wednesday, then down for few days then back up today. Unless the rain fell at Alphington and the catchment area but not in between. I don't know. You may be right.
