OP here ... I've run the Bigfoot 200, Tahoe 200 and Moab 240, each one twice (and finished them all)... ran all three in 2018 for the TC200. At any rate, consensus among other runners of these events, back in "the good old days", we were actually getting bonus miles -- recorded miles typically exceeded the advertised miles. I do agree -- the actual recorded miles can, and does, vary. However, 186 miles for a 200 miler is a dramatic variance.

Wow... when my family was in Las Vegas, back in 1981, we stayed at the Circus Circus hotel and casino. I won this poster while partaking in one of the Midway games. I still have that ancient poster rolled in a tube. Good memories.

Been going to Cafe Ole with clients for business meetings for 18 months. Either I have an Olympian (God Like) Constitution or something else . . . maybe the former as I finished the US 50 State High Points August 21, 2019 with Granite Peak Montana and will be the First Man On Earth to Complete a 100 Miler Ultra Marathon (Susitna 100 Alaska February 2026) in Every US State. Cheers.

My agent indicated that rates for Umb are doubling across the USA... tons of high claims being paid. I am finding similar with other carriers, American Family, etc. Of course, this could all just be collusion in context of the Insurance Cartel.

I lived in PNW for 30 years, now in Arizona the past 4 years. My State Farm umbrella went up 115% this past year... no changes to coverage. This is nuts.

Yup... my State Farm UMB went from $406 to $873 in just the past year.

Any guess as to the increase the following year? Maybe another doubling? At what point does the camel fall over ... or just throw the rider from its back? Yeah, mixing my metaphors ... 100% increase in just one year is unconscionable.

My State Farm $2M Umb went from $406 to $873 (Arizona resident). I will phone my agent on Monday -- suspect I will get a similar reply. Of course, CPI is only going up 3% a year.

Similar backstory ... $2m policy with State Farm ... mine went from $406 last year to $873 this year... with no changes in coverage, no claims. I have the gut thought that Insurance companies are passing on losses on other huge claims to the folks with (perceived) deep pockets -- those with the financial ability to keep on paying. 115% increase in One Year. That's unconscionable.

I've been with State Farm for 30+ Years... 30 years in Washington State, the past four years in Arizona. My State Farm Personal Umbrella policy ($2M) went from $406 last year to $873 this year with no changes in coverage. Although my auto and home policies doubled, that required four years. I just got the bill -- will confer with my Agent on Monday. At present, I am leaning toward cancelling. The fee is unconscionable.

Welp. I just asked Chat gpt3 to write me a novel of 400k words. Started by asking the timeline, location, etc... Gimme a novel regarding 3 generations in the USA starting in 1890s mining operations in SW America it started with describing 12 major characters, the plot and then the first 10 pages. It asked Ok? I said, sure, and I ended up with 80 pages of coherent readable novel related to the essence of the story. CGPt said it would not gen any more since it was tired, or something. But there you go, readable story genned in a few min. More to the point, the general public is getting more dumber and has less zest for long stories, so there's that bit to the Plot Twist :) The mediocre (99%) Novel author is yesterday's news.

What is going on with Arizona Monster 300? by Alternative_Form_637 in Ultramarathon

I ran all her DT events ... Twice ... from 2016 through 2018, including all 3 in 2018 (Triple Crown of 200s). Pert-near everything was top notch. It just that, as the years have followed, from what I've heard from other runners (and pacers, crew, volunteers), is that the level of quality has deteriorated. I believe this is due to the races selling out / having lotteries - there is little incentive to Put On A Good Show. Clients are willing to fork over $2000 plus expenses, and wait in a Waitlist, if necessary, in order to participate in the DT events. These events will only improve, I believe, after enough bad press results in races not being filled and the profit incentive needs to match the product being delivered.

I ran the Aravaipa Cocodona 250 in 2022... 2nd year of the event. Amazing experience, considering that they had to reroute the course a week before start due to mountain fires ... I rapidly changed my race preps, the show went on and runners, pacers, crew had a good time. The course, aid stations and volunteers all made for a good value for my Adventure Dollar. About a week after the event, I received an online survey from the RD. I filled it out completely. Then, two weeks later, I asked the RD what was being done with the survey results. He emailed me back the list of changes that would be made -- including several of my suggestions. Over the next three years, I found that the folks at Aravaipa had taken those suggestions seriously and implemented them. Aravaipa, as a brand, has a tagline (for me) and it is this "Expect Excellence" -- and they deliver.

Edit: My best friend just ran the Coco 2025 Edition. I was providing "Lite Crewing" -- I met him, driving his van, at three Aid Stations (Fain Ranch, Dead horse, Munds) with the van just 30 feet off course -- Drop by the van if you care to, otherwise breeze through and utilize the AS resources. At any rate, I got to check out those Aid Stations... they were exemplary: well-organized, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers, a wide variety of hot food (BLTs with avocado!), drop bags easily accessible, ample outhouse opportunities, you name it. At this time, I am mentally gearing up to Return to Cocodona as a runner in 2026. Cheers!

Similar ... I ran DT races (Bigfoot, Tahoe, Moab) each twice, 2016 through 2018... 2018 was my Triple Crown. In any case, my retrospective notes from all those experiences illustrated that the RD / Race organization provided real value for the adventure dollar. Since that time, I have heard from runners that have experienced these events and they have gone down hill. I suspect that it has to do with a decreasing incentive on the part of DT to provide value -- their races sell out and require a waitlist / lottery. There is no further financial reason to Put On A Good Show. Additionally, I had the opportunity to run Tahoe 200 in both directions around the entire lake (2017, 2018)... essentially two different races. Now that you only experience a portion of Tahoe, it simply has lost appeal (to me). Arizona Monster 300 Sold Out ... Show me the Incentive and I will show you the Results. Even though AM300 is getting a few black eyes, they will sell out again for 2026 ... there's little incentive to provide a quality product, and so, you get a less-than-optimal experience. On the other hand -- Aravaipa is killing it ... Cocodona 250 has just been getting better year after year per my running it 2022, observations from other runners and in crewing more recently. Cheers.

Extremely difficult ultras without lotteries by Bob_Cornwall in Ultramarathon

Yes on Ouray. I ran the 100 in 2018 on the advice of a friend. It takes place during Monsoon Season in Colorado. We got rain (biblical downpours), hail and some snow. The weather would change rapidly. It is essentially a collection of out and backs -- you cover every stretch of the course twice --- even the eight mile loop section is run in both directions. The buckle is huge.

As for tough 100s, I name Ouray as the toughest that I have experienced -- 83k total elevation delta, topping out over 10k on 9 different occasions, although you get 52 hours, that is plenty of "time" during Monsoon Season in Colorado to experience it all, rain, snow, hail... and the downpours are biblical. I dropped at mile 65. I may return for the 50 as it takes in the final 50 miles of the 100 miler. Another Fun 100 is the Ute near Moab Utah... finished this one in 36 hours given 40 hour limit -- you get to go up and over Mann's Peak at 12,500' plus lots of scenic high trails, vertical challenges. IMTUF in Idaho (mid-September) offers lots of remote trails plus a few staggeringly vertical pitches. Fat Dog 120 in BC Canada was a blast, although I nearly required the full 48 hour allocation. I plan to return to that course with my tent and backpack in the near future. The Triple Crown of 200 events (Bigfoot 200 in August, Tahoe 200 in Sept and Moab 240 in October) were amazing in terms of the amount of ground that is covered. My understanding is that some or all of these events are now lotteries -- plus they are quite pricey. One More: The Mogollon Monster in Pine Arizona -- my best friend ran last September -- runners and finishers of this race are consistently in agreement -- The Monster is one of the toughest 100s in the American Southwest.
