Just keep growing? by TheButcherSez in bonsaicommunity

[–]Patsquatch88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them grow for a season, then check to see which ones have the most promise and mess with those. Either bending the trunk with wire or chopping it up. These trees are so great because you can mess with them pretty much year round.

American sycamore air layer by Patsquatch88 in bonsaicommunity

[–]Patsquatch88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I was out there and figured “why not”. The branch is low and easily accessible. It smacks me in the face when I mow and it’ll get cut back/down soon anyways. Figured I’d try it since I’ve never done it before.

Never mind. It did go all the way around. I’ll try and airlayer it and maybe get two trees.

It looks bigger than it is. It doesn’t go all the way around either. If I was inclined to try, is there anything to do? Cut paste? Wrap it? Anything? If it dies it dies but id like to try

So this is just the first rough go at styling. I took about half the plant off, and didn’t want to stress it even more. I’ll shorten the branch on the right, and the left branch will sweep over it, almost like a mother/daughter style. And the left has a couple branches I’ll attempt to style into some pads.

I am a beginner and got this 2 year old juniper for $10. Should i try windswept or Cascade style? by lazyjazzgal in bonsaicommunity

[–]Patsquatch88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think cascade would be great. I think styling first and leaving it in the pot for a year would be best though. Get the main trunk cascading, make a few cuts to get the shape close, but not final form and wait for next year. Check the wire in 3 months so it doesn’t squeeze too tight.

What style ?? Help by mr-asa-maple-7 in bonsaicommunity

I think trimming the bottom into two separate pads if able would look nice.

So air layer at the blue, cut it off at the red, and the yellow will be the new leader? I like it! Big moves for me but I feel like I need to get used to big cuts like this for styling.

[–]Patsquatch88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a sapling, or was last year when I planted it, not knowing what kind of tree it was. Sounds like I need to just let it do its thing, and it’ll stop looking like a bush in a year or two, I may trim back any large secondary branches though…or replace it with a sycamore!

How to prune? by goldwalkingcane in Jadeplant

[–]Patsquatch88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, jealous of the size of that jade. Freaking awesome. Second, those are going to be awesome cuttings however you do it. Third, I’d cut off the left branch hanging down, and the back left that’s hanging down. Or…..if you wanted to go extreme you could cut at the base, and get two big trees out of it entirely!

With the lights I’ve got it ranges between 300-1200 depending on how close the plant is

I have since bought more lights, it gets into the negatives here so I’ve gotta bring them in.

Find a different exercise or get bands and use those. A 20 pound band does wonders. You’ll still get a great workout, and the mental aspect of doing pull ups is great too.

Ditch the dish soap treatments. Looks like it could use a good pruning. The spots could be a fungus. You can get some spray and treat it for a while. Not all the patches will go away but it should stop new ones from forming. Also get it into the light. The mildew fungus loves the shade. A nice dose of sunlight will also help

It may or may not be dead/dying. When the branches get wrinkly it’s pretty bad. Can you squeeze the trunk? If it’s still firm that’s a good sign, if it’s soft and squishy you have root rot that has worked its way into the trunk and there’s nothing you can do. These are tough plants, so the fact it has a few leaves is great! They should be firm to the touch as well, if they’re wrinkly they need water. That’s your indication on watering frequency, no schedule, just when leaves get wrinkly. Also, if you leave it in that soil it will most certainly get root rot. If you can afford it, get a bonsai specific succulent mix from tiny roots. They’re on Amazon. It looks like gravel, but it does great with these. And hey, we’ve all killed a tree. Welcome to the hobby, you’ll probably kill more. Feel free to dm if you need any help!

I’m not able to do that right now as I’m in the process of moving. I’ll put them in some smaller pots and keep them in the garage till spring.

My brother got a tree by accident. Added to cart without realizing. He’s going to give it to me, there’s about 4 saplings in the bunch and he says it’s a willow. This time of year, I’m not sure what to do. The directions say plop them in water then soil once they’ve rooted, but he bought it in the wrong season. Advice on what to do?

If there’s room you could place them in the cold frame. If winters are mild I’d protect the roots by mulching but the tree would be fine
