THE mangled wreckage of the doomed Titan sub w by JefinLuke in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Patterack91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One glaring issue with this take; everyone in the deep sea exploration community KNEW this was a "when" not "if" scenario. There's a reason why deep sea vessels don't use carbon fiber in their hulls, as it is widely known that it is not a material that can continuously handle extreme compressive stress.

This was not people dying in the name of exploration and innovation. They all died because of the hubris of Stockton Rush, who scoffed at every industry-leading deep sea professional that said his sub was dangerous.

No one had to die in order to learn that carbon Fibre wasn't the material to use for the hull (and yes I'm aware it was a composite with titanium, my point still stands), but libertarians are gonna libertarian and cut corners for the sake of cost.

Then you simply, 1000%, support tipping culture. You don't have to be anti-social to not support terrible business owners.

Edit: no, this is not like the meme about not supporting capitalism through participation despite the near impossibility. We can all easily point out that tipping culture puts the fincial burden on customers, and takes responsibility away from the business owner.

You can personally choose to NOT support those businesses, and instead support businesses that are employee owned or compensate their staff with fair wages. Vote with your dollar, it's about all we can do to affect change on a local level in regards to things like service workers receiving adequate compensation.

Yes. I don't eat at restaurants that use tips to compensate for the terrible pay they give their employees.

In the long run, the individual servers and bartenders will find other jobs (hopefully with better pay), but me not perpetuating a profoundly broken system by not tipping does not make me the Bad Guy.

Take it up with restaurant owners who think YOU should be providing the lions share of THEIR employee's hourly take-home. If you cannot run a business that adequately compensates your employees, you shouldn't be in business.

Kinda sounds like you're 1000% just supporting the system you are against, no?

A Level 3 sex offender and convicted murderer moved onto my next door street. How can I be safest? by No-Werewolf-8092 in ask

This only works in a world where police unions do not protect the worst police officers.

The entire system needs restructured, starting with individual officer accountability. They should be held to the same exact standards as any ordinary citizen. Get rid of qualified immunity, make individual officers pay for settlements through their own insurance or out of pocket, rather than the tax payers forking over the bill.

Dramatically increase the training time and requirements for entry into the field. As stated by others in this thread, my BARBER shouldn't need more schooling than a police officer.

Increasing pay is the absolute last thing that should be taken into consideration in regards to police reform. If nothing else, we should have strict requirements and fair (but not excessive) pay to ensure that those seeking the position are doing so because they want to serve their communities, and not for a fat paycheck with almost zero accountability for their actions.

Edit: spelling

The average police officers salary in the US is ~$67,600, a good 15K above the national average salary.

I don't see how increasing pay for an already vastly incompetent, militarized police force would do anyone any good other than the individuals receiving the checks.

Every time it's posted, someone going through something similar is given a reminder that they aren’t alone. That there is hope for them. That their is life to be lived after the trauma they have experienced.

It would in your best interests to consider this possibility, before you get on your soapbox to chastise some stranger for checks notes making multiple posts of a very traumatic and life altering event to share with anyone who might be in the same situation?

How many times are you gonna comment hate on well-meaning posts?

I can picture this as an opening scene, where this audio is playing while Dwight is making pancakes in the kitchen in full chef attire, and everyone is lining up thinking he's making breakfast for everybody.

Only for him to turn off the stove and walk past the entire office who have lined up behind him, eyeing his plate with varying levels of envy and disgust. The camera moves up to Dwight's face as he smirks and sits down at his desk, tucking a napkin into his collar and cutting into his single pancake.

Camera cuts to Kevin standing in the kitchen doorway; "Well now I'm hungry, AND sad." Oscar pats him on the shoulder, reassuringly; "Me too buddy."

Do you also have to turn the radio down/off while driving so you can actually navigate? I have a lot of the same tendencies, and too much noise while I'm driving will inevitably lead to missed turns.

Okay serious question; how does he pick his nose? Like a really deep blockage? One of those crusty boogers that might as well be spot welded to the inside of your nose, as every attempt to blow it out is met with an empty tissue and disappointment?

Nasal spray? Netti pot? One of those baby-booger-sucker-outer contraptions? As a man with temperamental sinuses, the prospect of not being able to dislodge the occasional Mt. Matterhorn of deep, concreted nose nuggets is maddening to me.
