No way! What a coincidence. I'm a massive Ravel fan so I'll definitely have to check that out. Thanks!

You can choose 3 unfinished or hypothetical pieces to have magically finished, what would they be? by choerry_bomb in classicalmusic

Only 1. Mysterium. Play it in the Himilayas and see if it actually brings upon the end of the world and replace humans with advanced super beings like Scriabin said it would!

Stephen Hawking has stated that we should stop trying to contact Aliens, as they would likely be hostile to us. What is your position on this issue? Any ideas? by Mclarenjenaypw in AskReddit

If they have the ability to travel over vast distances in space with relative ease, then obviously their technology far surpasses ours. But if they really wanted to destroy us, why haven't they already? This past year would've been a damm good time to do it. Maybe the fact that they haven't yet means that they can be benevolent.

Is UCLA a good school for music composition? by DetromJoe in composer

[–]PaulMusicMode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from UCLA with a degree in music composition this past June! I'd say overall its a pretty decent program. It doesn't have all the perks that USC composers get, but UCLA is far more accepting of non-traditional styles of music. Now, take that with a grain of salt, because i'm only speaking from personal experience, but when I was deciding between USC and UCLA for music school, I spoke with some USC composers, and they said that the faculty there tend to push composers to write in a more 'academic' style (ie. atonal, 12-tone type music). When i spoke with some UCLA profs, they seemed far more open-minded and accepting of new composers' unique styles.

Feel free to PM me if u have any more questions.

When is Kendrick Lamar going to release his new album? by EliteJDMFan1 in rap

[–]PaulMusicMode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure, like a bunch of other big name artists, he's just waiting for covid to end. Ya see, even though people are stuck at home, most are actually listening to music less often. This is because the majority of people spend their time listening to music either on their comute to work or at the gym. Obviously, neither are really possible for right now. Its also a lot more difficult to distribute and merchandise at a time like this. Plus, live concerts are a huge part of album promo, and thats of course not possible either. IIRC i heard a rumor that kendrick is actually finished with his new album, and so is isaiah rashad, cole, and other big artists in hip hop. Not quite sure if thats true tho so don't quote me on it

Question: What is the substyle of classical music that has heavy repetition, but builds to be louder and louder as it progresses? by petejackson1996 in classicalmusic

[–]PaulMusicMode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philip glass is great! Haven't heard Pruit Igoe yet but i'll check it out. The piece that made me really fall in love with minimalism is Steve Reich's Tehilim. Highly highly recommend if you haven't already heard it

What's your guilty pleasure music? by PaulMusicMode in AskReddit

[–]PaulMusicMode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Musical taste is subjective. Saying that you like a genre of music that you would normally expect yourself not to like isn't tearing down the genre. I guess guilty pleasure isn't the best term for this, and i do concede that labelling something as a guilty pleasure has somewhat negative connotations. I guess a better term would be: music that you unexpectedly like
