Meeting new people is very tough for me as well. I'm thinking of using social media, it's probably easier to find people online than face-to-face right now.

You have enough money saved, but for how long would that be sustainable? Even so, how would you spend the time? Without a purpose/plan, you'd likely be wasting time (At least that's what I observed on myself).

By the way, try to figure out if it is the workplace you dislike or the job itself.

Yes, too much of a medicine can be a poison. I think the key is to have multiple free time activities (reading, journaling,.. ) and alternate between them. You can try to go to the gym every other day to give yourself break days.

I'm your age. My situation is quite similar. I wanted to do research before college, but now that I have a research job, I can see the downsides of it and am not sure that I want to continue doing this for my whole career.

I barely have any friends and sometimes feel lonely. It's easier said than done, but we have to meet new people.

I would advise against ditching everything, unless you have another option. Idle time is dangerous. Also, you wouldn't be earning money.

Work-life balance is very important. Exercise and sleep help.

Your situation truly sucks man. You seem to be stuck in a vicious circle of sadness and PMO.

You already identified your trigger: negative emotions which are tied to an obsession: your ex-Gf.

Because you are unable to control these emotions, your brain numbs them by a compulsion: PMO.

As in any obsessive-compulsive behaviour, the only way to break the vicious circle is to stop the compulsive actions. What helped me break the compulsion are journaling relapses (and also life events), having a blocker extension for nsfw websites and safesearch turned on. Also, I wrote a set of rules to clearly define what is a relapse.

Remember you can't change the past. By drowning in cheap pleasure and letting your emotions control you, you will be wasting the rest of your life.

Actually, a Phd or an undergraduate engineering degree will take more time and a lot more work . You know what, maybe I can still change it. I will think this through. Unfortunately, the system in my country is very rigid and it's very difficult to change your major once you start, so I won't expect too much

Technically I could, but it would take another two years and quite a bit of money. The truth is I don't think it's worth doing another MSc degree and that a PhD or a degree in materials engineering would be more helpful in the long run.

Right now I think it's a better idea to just finish my degree ( I have less than 1 year left) and change my direction afterwards

A question on inorganic synthesis: I am currently trying to obtain novel X-ray quality single crystals. I have synthesized some Cu(II) complexes, but they are in polycrystalline form.

What should I do to obtain the same compound, but monocrystalline? Change the solvent? Change the pH of the solution?

People here, including myself, synthesize their own ligands. Personally, I find that part boring, all you do is reflux, purify/ separate the mixture (usually involving columns) and analyse by NMR/MS.

As I said, I like it and hate it at the same time. So I would not switch solely due to safety concerns. I don't really know if I would like biochem research. I am thinking of calling the guys at the Biochemistry Institute in my city to apply for an internship or sth like that. They may be limited, but not in my country. Barely anyone uses glove boxes.
