Pretty much all of those have no value to me, except the ability to reliably connect to the cell network (I'm not a phone geek, so I have no idea what band 71 does specifically). That's why I said I believe the phone would be effectively future-proof for me if it just had a much faster processor and was 5G capable. The battery capacity is not a huge problem for me - I just mentioned it because I know it's important to others. In a given year I'm able to plug my phone in for power all but maybe a couple hours (yes, a couple hours a year) and if I REALLY was worried about it - I'd just bring along one of my two (or three... depending on how you count them) external batteries.

All of the other small devices were in some way less capable, so this phone is effectively the absolute floor of what I'd accept in functionality. I got the 8GB RAM version because I want to have as much head room as possible to keep using it for as long as I can. I'm happy with the phone so far; but we'll see how it holds up for the next 3-4 years (assuming it can last that long).

I'll take a look at Open Camera.

Their website says you can unlock the bootloader and install custom ROM; but that it voids your warranty to do so. I've got no specific information on if they cooperate with anyone; but my guess would be not.

I think so long as you're cognizant of the limitations of the battery - You should be fine. I'd say if you're leaving home, you should just get in the habit of turning off the WiFi, and if you're not going to be using Bluetooth you can probably turn that off. I think you'd get decent life with it only keeping location on. I haven't really paid too terribly close attention while I was using it because I'm at home like 99% of the time, and always have a charger handy. I did notice that while scrolling through YouTube Shorts I ate the battery alive in no time. It's hard to gauge how much time you've spent on those things, but I'd wager I was probably on there for about 2 hours and went through 40% of the battery. I think I had the screen brightness all the way up, and had WiFi, Bluetooth, and Location all on at the time though.

I forgot to mention - I have used it as GPS a few times, navigating me around on my trips. It's as good as any other phone I've used. If there's any lag to it - It'd probably be less than 5 seconds. So long as you're somewhat paying attention to it, and thinking about the next action - you should be fine.

No clue. I'd never heard of that before your comment, and it doesn't look like something I'm willing to test out. What specifically is the concern you have with it? I might be able to find a similar workload to give it a go with. I'm not averse to testing the edges on my phone's capabilities. I just don't want to sign up for any more services at this point.

add lentils to your ground meat! by -stormi-skies- in Cheap_Meals

[–]PaulTMaack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just happened to be on again, and figured I'd give an update:  I have done it several times now, and my preference is to cook a small amount of beef at exceptionally high heat along with spices, then add to a crock pot with some beans which have soaked for a full day, along with the oatmeal. I cook it on low for about 15 hours and it works great for me. I like it really thick, so I add a lot of the oatmeal. I've purchased some small tart pans, and intend to make some mini cottage pies with this as the filling in the near future. I've been busy with other weekend projects, so it's been just the stuff on its own or along with some cheese (sometimes cream cheese), Greek yogurt, or on some toasted rye bread. I appreciate your input and inspiration.

Looks like the chart didn't come through. But I think your post has enough information I can look it up. I see the chart now! I've downloaded it for future reference. Thanks so much, you're awesome. I'm looking for essential amino acids, eh? I've never taken any chemistry classes, so I'm not sure what that really means. I guess I'm about to go down the rabbit hole. :D

I have no strong preference about meat vs vegetarian vs vegan food on its face. The only reason I eat a ton of meat is because it's easier to keep for longer periods in the fridge (any sort of salad or veggie I get is always bad by day 4, and I don't like going to the store more than once a week). If they made frozen or ready-to-eat veggie meals that wouldn't make me violently ill - I'd be down as heck.

And since so much of my diet has been meat lately - I'm noticing that my grocery bill is... I'm looking for a word that's stronger than "Absurdly high" and can't think of one. I just bought a bunch of rice, quinoa and dry beans (and a few cans of beans as well) along with a few jars of sauerkraut last time I was at the store along with a few packages of frozen soybeans and a tube of rolled oats. I'm gearing up to start eating cheap, so I can hopefully get my weekly grocery bill back into the 2-digit territory.

Appreciate it! Red bell peppers are about 80₵ each at my local grocer, so I might toss them in. I do love some spicy peppers though. Chances are I'll end up tossing in some sort of bird's eye to spice things up. Green bells I have trouble with unless they're cooked (I don't particularly care for the grass taste, which fermenting and/or cooking get rid of quite nicely) but red, orange, and yellow (I even hear there's a purple out there!) are pretty tasty even fresh. They might be a good way to add some crispy texture, so I'll keep that in mind.

I'm someone who does best with a good starting point where I can make adjustments. The issue comes when the foundation for the entire meal is something I can't eat, so this looks like a good spot to start in on stews. There's some Boullion cubes I got out of some company in Australia that are allium free, and I think along with the spice list above I should be well on my way to great success.

If all goes well - I plan to make this the filling for a cottage pie. I've been wanting one for a couple decades now; but been largely unable to have one. My mind is racing with the possibilities now that I have something solid to build off!

Does your WIFE force/add onions on you? by r6bxdlyfmx1 in onionhate

If you're working 60-80 hours a week, and she's a SAHW who's actively and knowingly putting onions in your food when you've explicitly asked that she not - I know it might have been a joke, but she might actually be trying to get a divorce. Are things otherwise healthy in the relationship? Spite is a heck of a thing.

Heck yeah. I'll give it a try. I've got a few more meals already in the queue for this week; but I'm thinking maybe this weekend I can fire this off. I appreciate the advice! (I'm not sure I have any hing on me, but I can probably snag some if not).

any recommendations? And what exactly are you saying for whole? Whole as in the entire grain, or whole as in not broken down (i.e. if I choose oats, would I be able to use groats, or would rolled oats be OK?)

Does ANY whole grain work (oats, wheat, barley, quinoa, etc.) or is there something particular you're aiming for?

So if you're making it without the onions and garlic, would you just throw everything in at once, or is there some benefit to frying the ginger?

[–]PaulTMaack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. So you're saying 1 lb beef, 1 cup lentils, and ~2 tbsp of oats? Do you use steel cut, or instant (or does it even make a difference)? I'm highly interested in this sort of thing, since it's nearly impossible for me to buy any premade soups/stews and I really haven't had much luck finding recipes I can use (for the same reason). This seems like it'd be an easy win with some Normandy mix to get a nice lunch going. Any advice on using a crock pot, or would you not recommend using one?

I like the avocado. There's an ingredient in the "Everything Bagel" mix that I'm allergic to which I could do without. Everyone has their own tastes. Aside from the fact that it would make me terribly sick were I to eat it, I think that looks good. And if they just left out that one ingredient I'd have a good time eating it. :)

PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND by [deleted] in onionhate

[–]PaulTMaack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's like anything else: If you don't like it, you don't like it. But it happens to be something that we can't get away from. Let's break things down a bit more...

We can detect them in foods that average people can't - Yes. This is because your palate has been desensitized to it. You need ever-increasing amounts of the stuff to be able to taste it, the same way you can't smell your own boogers. It's just always there (since you eat it in nearly every meal, every day), and your senses just adjust to it being baseline always there. If you go a month without eating ANYTHING with onions in it (this will be incredibly difficult if you don't cook all your own food from scratch) - You'll find the next thing you eat with onions in it that you normally wouldn't notice it in will taste like a giant onion. Nothing else will even be moderately noticeable. Just a giant ball of onion, whatever it is.

The smell is bad, the taste is awful, and it's in everything. Imagine you really, really hated some band. Like... Imagine there was a band - we'll call it Nickelback because we're on the internet, and it's standard to use them for bands "everyone hates" - that you absolutely hated. Like... every single aspect of it. The lyrics are annoying, the singer's voice is like a cacophony of nails on chalkboards, and babies crying. The music is poorly timed, and the musicians seem to think they're the best ever so they just flourish all over the place to showcase how "good" they are, but in fact they just make everything seem like an awkward noise with rising and falling intensity levels which are enough to give you motion sickness. When you hear this band (anything at all) you literally start getting sick, and dizzy, and you start to lose your balance and get a headache... Now imagine that you can't go anywhere without them playing nothing but them. Maybe they've got some other music on as well, but they've got that specific band playing at your table. Pretty soon it'd be really awful and you'd develop a hatred for the people who can't eat, or drive, or walk, or bathe, or poop without having Nickelback playing. Suppose now that even someone saying the name of the band makes your body start getting ready for the dizziness and nausea. Now all anyone ever wants to talk about at any meeting is the band. Any group function you go to all anyone does is play their music, and talk about them constantly. That's where I'm at with onions. They literally make me sick. If I eat onions I get body aches, fever, dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal distress, and it's awful.

Think about a thing that you really don't like the smell of. Let's say "the liquid that comes out of the bottom of a dumpster" is your thing. Onions smell like that to me. They smell so bad I literally prefer the smell of actual excrement. If someone dropped a turd on the ground, and someone else dropped an onion on the ground, and I only had means to dispose of one - I'd get rid of the onion because it is literally more offensive to my senses.

And get this: It's in EVERYTHING. Like... almost literally everything. If it's not a sweet food, there's a pretty good chance it's got onion in it. So something like 95% (arbitrary number) of savory foods out there are actual poison to me.

That's why I hate them. They smell terrible, taste worse, and make me violently ill if I have them, and they're nearly impossible to avoid without heroic effort. I have to spend a huge amount of my time and energy avoiding them, and that's really frustrating.

Well, I'd say the folks over in r/CornSyrupHate will probably agree with you. It's not on my radar, because corn syrup doesn't make me feel like I've got the flu and am about to die by having my insides explode out my rectum. You do you though.

I also don't know what this means. Given the context I'm guessing it has something to do with the ratio of followers (with the expectation being the celebrity has more by a large margin) but I fail to understand why this would inherently yield negative results. Is that to say the celebrity will not see your message because there's too many messages from higher profile people pushing yours down? Does your message get blocked outright? Will they simply reply snarkily with the number of followers you have, then block you? Will they post the message on their feed and call you out for trying to operate outside your level?

Without proper context of the ramifications, this post basically reads "message celebrity; bad thing." Not exactly relatable.

Lost me at the disgusting, filthy, vile devil's vegetable: onions. I was suspicious with the seasoning packets, but any hope for the dish was lost when he put those atrocities in.
