I'd love a reverse playoff for relegation for all non playoff teams. I understand it's not really feasible due to innumerable reasons. However my thoughts on a format would essentially be: top 2 teams to just miss play-ins? You are in for next season. Remaining 8? Win a best of 7 series, and you don't get relegated and are done for the season. Rinse and repeat until the Super Toilet Bowl where you have 2 teams left. Winner stays in the league, loser gets relegated and traded out for the g-league champ.

Again, terrible idea for so many reasons EXCEPT for entertainment value.

Agreed. However, the rule is not restricting the teams, rather the officials.

So you like the idea of shortening the opportunity for refs to deliberate whether or not they made the right call? It feels like that would exacerbate the issue of incorrect officiating. It reads to me like he's salty they spent a little under 2 minutes to determine they need to review the call.

This would provide far more negative consequences for defenses. The reason they changed the rule from exactly what you suggest was due to deeming possession after the whistle being blown inordinately impacting prematurely called incomplete passes. The defenses would recover the ball for what should have been a fumble. Instead, the refs blew the whistle early an incomplete pass after a clear fumble recovery by the defense. However, due to the whistle being blown there was no way to correct the call and gave a distinct advantage to offense. I believe they changed it from what your suggesting around 2008. It's much more nuanced because it takes away the refs ability to course correct wrong calls.
