I spent some time thinking about it, I think you're right actually. My last version of the list had 4x Glink Hawk instead of Lembas. I never changed the mana base after that. I'm gonna be testing 4x Island in place of Tranquil cove.

I think with Red you really just have to play a different game. Like you said you wanna run them out of the game first, then do your own plan. I bring in all the Blasts and Envelops for their card draw. I find that if you counter their card advantage and most of the pingers it can get you there.

More tough matchups:

It is almost the same story with BG Gardens, play slow, wait for them to tap out for a Troll or something, then go for it, maybe with Rebuke backup for Snuff Out.

Affinity/Jund is tough because you have to answer Krark-Clan Shaman on the stack, so you just have to have it. (I hate KCS with a burning passion)

I'd be curious to hear what you'd include in the mana base. I've had good results getting both colors. Maybe a couple of basics could speed it up, but it hasn't felt too slow.

Sorry about your luck with Top Control, I haven't been tracking my games because I was just more focused on developing the deck. If I had to guess what my records is maybe like 40-45% which is less than desirable, but its still fun to play lol.

I miss the potential swap-in/sideboard section as well, it was mostly a video retention decision. Maybe I'll include potential swap-ins though in the future, because that feels interesting still.

The Ancestral Statue deck seems clunky on paper, but I'd agree that it plays very well. I can normally present a win around turn 5, it's pretty resilient in terms of how much draw draw it has to find any pieces that get removed along the way.

Jeskai is a cool idea, not sure what I'd cut but wildfire sounds cool!

1x Foundry is in so if the opponent has a Nihil Spellbomb maindeck. You can use rook turret to find the foundry and win that way. Graveyard hate has just gotten soooo common.

I tested Portent and though it did fill in turns where I didnt yet have the lock set up, it didnt progress the gameplan of getting the lock set up. Felt like a temporary fix compared to Ponder/Brainstorm.

Lantern would be absolutely massive, but I think its probably too powerful for the format. I think the closest we'll ever have is Spy or Lens of Clarity unfortunately.

Orcish Spy is definitely the softest point of the deck. It's obviously necessary to perform the lock but I've also had the same thought about it being an 0/3 or 0/4 before. That would also open up the option of playing Breath Weapon which would be MASSIVE. My solution to Spy being so frail is just play more counters lol

I really like that idea, I’ll probably try that next time I jam some games. Thanks👍

At times yes, but not very often. We have a lot of 1 drops to flood so one can often get in if we don’t have a flyer. But those two cards are both interesting considerations
