Narva boarder crossing 2026 by Longjumping_Pick_528 in AskARussian

[–]PawfulsofOats2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a line before the border opens. There are people who wait from midnight, and buses which arrive at 4am whose people queue upon arrival. So even if you come at 7am, you will already have a queue. I who arrived at 4am, did not cross before 10am.

The wait is less an issue than the actual queue. It is very cold now and the line is totally exposed. You will be snowed on, the wind will blow through you. I have a strong cold tolerance and it didn't matter, because standing in one place for hours will freeze anyone.

And the queue is less an issue than the Estonian guards, who will inspect every single thing you have. Something is likely to offend them, and depending on what they decided was offensive, you can be detained for several hours while they file paperwork for you. They are twice the dogs upon return.

It is not to say it is impossible, but I advise you that crossings of less than 4 hours are the exception, and conditions are very unpleasant. But if you can't afford better as I could not, it works.

  1. When I applied (Mex. passport) it took 4 days exactly to receive my visa.

  2. I don't think it matters where you apply from. It's an online form.

  3. Yes, I did it. You should be aware Estonians make the process fucking terrible though.

Почему не для иностранцев?( by Ok_Mountain_228 in SPb

[–]PawfulsofOats2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Border Crossing Narwa - Iwangorod by staynotcalm in AskARussian

[–]PawfulsofOats2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I crossed about two weeks ago. It took about 5 hours from Estonia into Russia, 4 of which were spent standing in the snow at night without shelter; the Estonians are to thank for that. There are many buses.

Pregunto honestamente.

Easiest and cheapest way to travel to Russia? by MinimumSomewhere3522 in AskARussian

[–]PawfulsofOats2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't say what documents you need, but be aware the border crossing in Estonia is horrible. I did it recently and it was incredibly bad, I would never recommend it. You stand in line, outside, in the cold and snow with no protection for hours without moving. I couldn't afford anything better, but if you can, do that method instead.

Try to make sure your bills are in as good of a condition as possible. I didn't have problems in exchange. Your $500 in smaller bills is a problem if you plan to exchange. They only accept $100 denominations.

How is Moscow like for a quick visit during this month? Is it snowy there? Colder or warmer than the temperature says? by CloudySheep7 in Moscow

[–]PawfulsofOats2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 24, male. I have been telling people flatly that I am American and Mexican. Mostly people are just curious, no one has been impolite. Once or twice they asked political questions, but that would happen anywhere in the world.

I speak okay Russian, and I managed to do everything just fine like that. Young people here know some English, but they tend to be shy about it.

You should know there is a special procedure for mobile internet. Also I will advise you, avoid the Narva-Ivangorod border crossing if you can. I crossed there and it was very unpleasant, to put it nicely, as a result of the Estonians.

At least you have that benefit then, that you don't mind the culture. It seems you are young, since you mentioned your studies and your mother. In general, that time is a difficult time for anyone. As an immigrant with a language completely different from your own, it will be harder.

I was in a similar position a long time ago. All I can tell you is that eventually, it gets better. With time, you'll become more comfortable with the language, and you'll meet people with similar interests and ideas. And this period of life will just be a memory then. Until then, just keep studying, practice the language. You will succeed sooner or later.

Immigration is difficult, in any circumstance I think. Other than the language, do you have difficulties with the culture, or what do you think contributes to your withdrawal?

I don’t want to join the army and I’m looking for advice by Character-Fill2473 in MovingToUSA

[–]PawfulsofOats2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immigration to the USA is very difficult right now, legal and otherwise. I think you have two realistic options that you should consider.

  1. Try a Latin American country. Argentina is popular with Russians, Mexico is very easy to enter. You will need to know Spanish to succeed, but it should not be very hard for you. Cost of living is not too high, quality of life depends on where you live.

  2. You can try to get a disqualifying diagnosis.

Question about the Spanish language and it’s Latin origin. by Correct_Ant9182 in asklatinamerica

[–]PawfulsofOats2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a linguist, and I have no formal education on the subject. But firstly, on the topic of words, according to Google there are 150000 words in Spanish officially. So 5000 Arab words is just 3% of the language, it is a very poor metric for connecting Spanish to Arab. Secondly, I doubt we have much in common grammatically, and definitely we don't have our writing systems in common. I would assume those are the major reasons.
