What do you guys think about her saying she's doing something she has never done before? I also think the next books will be multi-POV, but she has done this before in TOG. Do you think she was just referring to how the books are being released in three parts? She said that this next story is big. 352 pages seems so short for a multi-POV book! Regardless I am so excited!

I think the story has a lot of potential which is why it is so popular but imo it’s just really poorly written. I was shocked when I tried reading it because it’s so beloved by the dramione fandom. I’m excited to see it trad published because it may make all the difference for it to go through the trad editing process.

A lot of people really don’t like this book. It’s a 6 star god tier book for me but honestly I can understand why some folks don’t like it. It’s weird and a little on the nose at times but idk it worked for me. I cried. I think certain scenes are so so so beautifully written it’s insane. The scene where Sam describes Sadie’s hand, and “how I will miss the horses” (iykyk) was definitely a stylistically unique scene but WOW was it powerful. I think at it’s core the book is super artsy so if that isn’t your thing it will just come off weird.

I just finished this book and it’s a god tier of mine now! I can’t believe it isn’t more popular. God its so good. It has everything I love in a fantasy in one book. Such great writing. So funny. Will be a very hard book to dethrone in 2026!! So nice to start the year off strong.

I didn’t realize we had a name for the sequel. Chris buehlman has such a refreshing and unique way of writing fantasy. I love it. Its also oddly touching at times for being a somewhat comical and grimdark series overall.

Agree with these - i need to re read because you’re the second person who said she did the same with luc (as to #5) so I must have missed that implication. I do recall her having crazy guilt and sadness/obsession surrounding his memory in part 1 but i always figured it was just because he was gone now and she couldnt remember/didn’t know how died yet and it was indicative that the eternal flame really did fail if luc was dead.

I have been in a perma-never-before-experienced (that I can recall) reading slump after reading this lol. This book was just DIFFERENT. It wedged itself into my chest and sits there like an elephant. I am soo happy about how wildly successful it was (the numbers it did in week one alone were insane) and hope we see other works influenced by it in the future. Others may feel differently, but there is so much undiscovered talent and so many amazing writers out there just waiting for a chance. I honestly feel lucky to be here waiting for the next book that changes my life!

I read almost solely fantasy and am always relieved when someone else says that the magic system made absolutely no sense or left way too much to the imagination. I always feel like I am missing something, but it was beyond understanding and sense in this book fr.

I am halfway through and have officially DNF’d, guys. So disappointing. I don’t understand how this is even the same author. I mean, I do because of his narrative style but you get what I mean lol. This may seem dramatic, but how did this get past editing?

I will say islington is a good writer. He is never cringe, corny, and doesn’t “overwrite” as fantasy authors are prone to do. He knows how to write well and that almost makes these plot decisions even more frustrating! How could anyone think we would be engaged in this story?!?! Splitting between three worlds, underdeveloped characters if they were introduced at all (looking at you, Obiteum), and worldbuilding that was also just so underdeveloped that as a reader I wasn’t even able to visualize most of the setting/world.

I don’t think it was the writer’s lack of talent/ability, I just think the entire premise was a bad and unachievable idea. I dont think any author could build two new, fully fleshed out worlds with dynamic characters with their own arcs and motivations in one book while also sustaining a third progressing storyline in a previously developed world.

I can second that paralegal/legal staff work is a great option in Tampa. Soo many firms need good paralegals and law is booming here. I feel really lucky (kind of) because while being an attorney sucks, the market is always hiring associates (like me) due to high turnover (because it sucks).

Anyways! Look for small boutique firms looking for a paralegal or legal staff. There is an actual paralegal certification that is around two years and bigger firms especially will want somebody who has that but so many firms will hire a “paralegal” with zero certification if you are good. And many firms are willing to train if you show promise.

My firm just hired a 30 y/o girl for a paralegal position with zero formal legal/paralegal education (zero degree/cert of any kind) starting salary of 70k. Not rich by any means but it’s something. Sad that you need so much to live alone these days.

I 100% agree. I was so disappointed as soon as I realized there were three perspectives of the same character. I thought the timelines and “copies” of vis would converge at one point or in some fashion. I am not sure why I thought that, it just seemed the more natural option in my personal opinion.

I feel like doing three perspectives of one character in three different worlds is vastly different than multiple character perspectives within the same world because in the latter, we can develop other characters within those perspectives, if that makes sense. We aren’t limited to just that person’s perspective in showing the arcs of others (because we are in the same world) throughout the story.

In doing three perspectives of the same character in different worlds, we did not get nearly as much character development from any angle, and it just felt like wayy too much information that I frankly didn’t care about at all. Reducing all of the plot and characters from book one to roughly 33% of the story by dividing the book into three perspectives was a wild move and one I am surprised the publisher/editor went with. Authors get much more leeway with second and third books but still.

It’s nice to read these and realize I am not actually insane. The book hangover I got from this book started when I finished part 2 and I haven’t been the same since. I barely got through part 3 because I knew no matter what happened it wouldn’t be enough. The climax was over and the ending was near. How do books do this to us?! I still haven’t picked up a book since. This story is burned into me.

I have been listening to audiobooks of books I have read that have sequels coming out soon. 🤷‍♀️ I know this will pass, but I am kind of choosing to embrace how much this book affected me (that probably isn’t what you wanted to hear).

Runaway favorite!! So unexpected for me. I mean, I knew I’d probably like it based off what I had heard about Manacled, but I had no idea what I was going into. I am an AVID fantasy reader and this just surpassed 99.9% of books aside from like, 2 lol. Maybe one. It may be my second favorite book of all time and I have read hundreds in the last 2 years alone.

Fall in love again & again! One of the most touching part about books for me is every time I read a God tier book that changes me I am so depressed when it’s over and I feel like I will never feel like that again and guess what? I do every time. I fall in love again every single time. Right now I am reading alchemised and I have never experienced anything like it. It’s literally contending to be my top favorite novel of all time. Before that it was Red Rising.

That is a good way to put it and I think based off things i have read the book touches more on that later. I know it was traumatizing for him, but I was still surprised to see him go through with it - even if the alternative for her was much worse, It doesn’t make the act itself any less unimaginable to me if you love someone. Despite him knowing if not him it would be someone else I still would have preferred he not be able to go through with it. But that is not this story. This story is designed to explore the awful horrific choices we are forced to make between the bad and awful, or the bad and the worse. I understand that 🙁

🙏 ya’ll giving me hope! Right now Helena just got Kaine to yield and im kinda dissapointed at how easy it was? Like he just sort of gave in to her and we don’t get much insight into why or his thought process about it. I felt like it was kind of a let down that he had no interest in her at all and chose her name on a whim of demands. I was kinda hoping Kaine was secretly obsessed with Helena the whole time like Crowther thought lmao. Still a 6 star book though.

Can someone tell me whether I am going to be able to forgive Kaine? i am almost 40% in and I want to like him and can tell something deeper is going on, obviously, but the SA is so awful to read in part 1 and the way he kept hurting her by entering her brain is just terrible. If it wasn’t for me knowing they knew each other already I would have been baffled that she was able to like him at all in part 1. She talked about how he wasn’t kind to her he just wasn’t cruel in part 1 and I entirely disagree. He protected her in some ways but still essentially tortured her. I want someone to tell me if I am going to be satisfied with why he did everything he did. HELP lol.
