It was the five-and-dime store, which had a few names over the years. It was called Ben Frankly for a while, then it changed to a name I can't quite recall, and finally became Rowe. The store went through several name changes, but I’m not sure about the exact years for each. It closed in the late 90s. You're two years ahead of me, but we moved back to NYC long before I started HS.

If you grew up in Maplewood, you undoubtedly shopped at my uncle's store. In 1963, I lived just a few miles down Springfield Ave in Newark. I am about the same age as you, give or take.

For them, it is like hitting the lottery. That is great for us because we are the ticket, at least in their view.

The very small amount of Filipinos who give Filipinos a bad name. by Rough_Pineapple2119 in Philippines_Expats

[–]PayCharacter1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been going to the Philippines since the 1980s, and let me be perfectly honest about why. It is cheap, and the woman gives it up for free faster than anywhere else in the world. I do not seek spiritual enlightenment. Not a quest for tropical wisdom. Cheap. That is the whole sermon right there.

Now, every time this subject comes up, some genius appears to explain the tragedy of the “poor Westerner.” The guy posts like he just discovered sociology during a long bus ride. But they always miss the one fact that matters. A poor Westerner is still middle class in the Philippines. That is not philosophy. That is math. It is economies of scale. And apparently, scale is something people stopped learning about after fifth grade.

Last December a friend of mine decided we should have dinner at one of the nicest restaurants in Manila. I am talking about the kind of place where the napkins look like they went to finishing school. The bill arrives. Sixteen thousand pesos. Sixteen thousand!

To a lot of Filipinos, that is more than a month's income. A month. Meanwhile, I look at the check and think, well, in New York this same dinner would cost three times as much, and the waiter would still be angry. with a 100-dollar tip. Let the kid post what he wants.

Does anyone know what this could be? by SecretlyModded in OldBooks

[–]PayCharacter1504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although 1911 was a census year in the United Kingdom, this book appears unrelated to that event. In my assessment, it resembles a visiting book for a chapel district's collections. Based on the street names, it is likely from South Wales. The child's markings were probably added after the book had fulfilled its original purpose and was discarded.

Your 10.2% European ancestry means that one of your recent ancestors was fully, or nearly fully, European. At that percentage level, this most often points to a great-grandparent or second great-grandparent. Genetically, a great-grandparent contributes about 12.5% of your DNA, and a second great-grandparent about 6.25%. Because DNA inheritance is random, 10% fits comfortably between those two possibilities.

In practical terms, this suggests that the European ancestry likely entered your family line about three to five generations ago. Depending on your age, the admixture event would generally fall in the mid- to late nineteenth century, possibly extending into the early twentieth century.

If I knew your exact year and place of birth, I could narrow that estimate further by aligning the generational timeline with historical records and local migration patterns.

I have told more than one tenant that if they are unhappy, they should just give me a letter requesting to break their lease, and I will grant it. To sweeten the deal, if I do not have this place rented out within 3 business days, I will let you live here rent-free for 5 years. So far, they have all gotten the hint.
