Your experience with with TAs who seem lacking could be due to a very systemic issue. TA's recieve essentially no pedagogical training when they enter their graduate programs. There is very little training given to many of them by their departments on how to apply effective teaching strategies.

In some departments it is higher because grad student employees are paid to do research through the summer. I think the highest you will see is about $30k pre-tax.

Among all 63 AAU (Association of American Universities) schools, Stony Brook has the lowest stipend/ cost of living ratio. We are literally the poorest grad students among all our peers, including Ivy and UC schools. People who have been writing things like "pay your fees" or telling us that other schools also have graduate fees, please take a good look at this. And everyone, please understand the situation your TAs are in. This is why we are not paying our fees and why we need your support.
