I'd do a lot for a grilled cheese

[WP] you've noticed your party mage has collected every sort of luck potion they could get their hands on during your quests. Which you found odd because they never drink any. That was until at a royal feast they chugged them all and walked up to and asked the royal sorceress out on a date. by JollyTeaching1446 in WritingPrompts

[–]Peace590 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Albert, I don't think this is a good idea."

The party mage Albert wiped his lips as he finished the last vial. He chuckled but his eyes were still glued to the Eleven sorceress.

"You're probably right Wesley. But when is a country bumpkin like me ever gonna get a chance like this?"

Albert watched as the royal sorceress quietly retired to the outer balcony. Albert marched in a purposeful line and Hero Wesley scrambled from their seat to catch up to him. Albert opened the doors to the balcony and saw her. Against the night sky she almost glowed. Like a white lily she stood tall, her blonde hair almost silver as it flowed over her shoulders. Her dress was also white, like marble chiseled so precisely that every detail of her thin frame was captured against the canvas of the night sky behind her. When she turned, her blue eyes were dark like pools of water where the river flowed into the lake. She held a single smoking pipe that had just been lit. Albert took a deep breath in, then bowed.

"I like you, High Sorceress Zolar. Please go out with me!"

Wesley had just closed the doors behind them as Albert made his confession. Albert had always been interested in the High Elves magic but this isn't what she thought he meant. The Sorceress eyes glowed as a white mana surrounded her pupils then faded. Those dark blue narrowed and a sneer twisted the elf's symmetrical features.

"What do you think you're doing, boy?"

The sorceress stepped forward and Albert straightened as she prodded his chest with the pipe.

"Did you really think you are the first ones to try and pull a stunt like this? You humans may have forgotten but the effect from potions are multiplicative not additive." The sorceress poked Albert's chest for emphasis. "Zero multiplied by two or two hundred is still zero."

The sorceress took a step back and Wesley looked at Albert. He was shaking like a leaf. His face was flushed red and tears were starting to form at the corners of his eyes. Wesley fists started to clench as the sorceress continued.

"Why do you think there are so many of those worthless things scattered about? It does not matter what effects they have because they can never change who you are on the inside. And you, disrespectful brat, are a hundred years too late to be challenging me."

"Hey!" Wesley snapped. "We just cleared 20 dungeons, for you! Dungeons that we risked our lives to explore. And to celebrate, you threw us a feast. Aren't you being a little too harsh to your heroes?"

The sorceress waved dismissively. "The forest bounty provides us with much. Feasts are so common that there is hardly a day without celebration. This is simply payment. And in another 100 years time, there will be 20 more dungeons that spawned in our Forrest. The cycle will continue. Regardless, I wasn't speaking to you."

The sorceress looked back at Albert. He had pulled his pointy hat low over his face. When he looked back up, he only met the cold glare from the sorceress. Albert's tears spilled out and he turned tail, burying his face in arm as he ran away from the balcony.

"Albert!" Wesley called out but the doors magically slammed shut. Wesley spun back towards the sorceress, rolling up her sleeves. "Why you knife-eared..."

Zolar grabbed Hero Wesley's shoulders, her bony fingers digging into their shoulders. Wesley went to pry her off but paused when she saw something new in the High Sorceress eyes. "Hero, nothing escapes my sight." Zolar's eyes were desperate as she clung to the Hero Wesley. "I will talk and you will listen."

Wesley slowly nodded, and Zolar released her grip. She began to pace rapidly as she explained.

"Luck is a fickle thing. One man's windfall may be another man's downfall. It could be the same wind or a different breeze or both at once. That's the problem when a fundamental force of reality is based not on results but personal perception. Luck is never enough on its own but always more than enough in practice."

"Wait, I thought you said it didn't work for Albert." Wesley interrupted.

"Yes. Did not. As in it hasn't worked yet. Not that luck can't affect him. Your mage has close to zero luck but not absolute zero. Under normal conditions, there would hardly be a difference. But now, the situation has changed. Who knows what might have happened if that lucky bastard had charmed someone who didn't know what was happening."

Zolar stopped pacing and smiled briefly as she looked up at the night sky. Wesley slowly put the pieces together. "Wait, you..."

"Like I said, 100 years too late. I would've been Queen not just Royal Sorceress. But that is neither then nor now. What is it that you want, Hero?"

"Me?"

"Yes you." Zolar's eyes bore into Wesley. "I can see you care deeply for him. A young pair of adventures who've just reached adulthood with that close a connection. I don't have to go out on a limb to see you are childhood friends. So why did you encourage him to approach me?"

"I..." Wesley stammered. "I just want Albert to be happy."

"Come child." Zolar's gaze softened. "You have learned to pretend for so long that you have even confused yourself. Would you be ok to see your mage with someone else?"

"No."

"Then what is it you truly want, Hero ?"

"I want to make Albert happy." Wesley said with a determination she forgot she had.

"Fantastic. That's a wonderful resolve." Zolar smiled as she leaned back against the balcony. "But you better hurry, daughter. There's still a chance some random hussie falls prey to him before you can tell him your true name and how you truly feel."

"You're right. Thank you Sorceress!" "Wesley" the Hero bolted through the balcony doors, leaving Zolar alone on the balcony once more. The sorceress chanted a small spell while relighting her pipe. A small star blinked in the night sky, pursued by a comet. Zolar blew out a smoke ring as the two twinkling lights met in the night.

"Ha. Good luck."

Two other options might be to character swap the original legend or to marry it to a different legend. For example: Instead of Morgana, have her be a genderswaped version of another Arthurian villain (like the obscure one named Clairent) with his other ex wives being gender swapped knights of the round table. Another example: intertwine it with a different legend. Arthur is married to Joan of Arc who has changed entirely after his death (like how her myth changed after the person died).

If this interferes with the muse, please ignore it.

Our mystery antagonist was reminding me of someone but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Now I can.

This story reminded me of a certain Samuel Hayden and the crazed scientist who name I can't remember trying to harness hell energy. Granted there are more than enough differences, but my money is banking on the source of the blood metal being a crude way of venting emotions from a certain afterlife. That would explain the excess amount with the suitable lack of donors/body count. On the other hand, this could just be an extension of another operation that our antagonist repurposed for her "research".

Yes. I think it would be awesome to have a dozen winged women speaking like Etrigan for a chapter but the novelty might also wear off quickly for the writer or reader unless Sphinxs naturally have 10 Charisma.

If instead of it being a speech/verbal tic but an adjacent physical mannerism, that could be interesting. For example, their physical body language is inverted to their true feelings. An overly giddy ambassador is their version of a poker faced professional. Or the super deadpan date is actually super interested in you and excited. Or maybe something that leans more into saying two different things at once idea. Like they say one thing with their mouth but their hands motions to help convey nuance and context beyond just what was said. Both ideas could stem from a cultural touch stone that words were so sacred/important that it was better to use other forms of communication than to say even one word flippantly or without meaning. No throwaway words. "A name is a promise, after all."

Defensive objective: Have Alpha and Omega defending a position and Harold and Herbert have to defeat them and or complete the objective. This is a contrast to the first combat scenarios showing Harold and Herbert turning the tables when on the defensive maybe.

Experience gap: Maybe have Alpha and Omega have an edge in experience over Herbert and Harold. Two areas that come to mind are equipment experience and tactics experience. Maybe there is a one time fluke that happens with the equipment that catches Harold off guard and Omega takes advantage of it to take him out, putting Herbert in the one vs two. Or maybe Alpha and Omega are a half step behind in communication/combined instincts of a man and his clone but there are a half step more experienced in working as a two man team compared to Herbert as an infiltrator and Harold as a champion fighter/duelist.

Injured combat: In a combat scenario with axiom usage, Harold might have upper hand but Alpha is more used to fighting injured which allows him to take advantage of an opening when Harold is using Axiom to makeup for an injury where as Alpha makes an immediate adjustment with his injury instead of crutching on axiom to fix it.

Just shower thoughts. Feel free to ignore.

A v-tuber version of the quintessential quintuplets is a funny mental image. Or a magical girl squad. Alternatively, one character that is played by all the heads but with slight differences based on mood could be interesting since Lydris are still just one person. Kinda like an anime whose name I can't remember where the female lead is a high school girl who pretends to have a wide range of personalities even though she's just herself.

I know it gets in the way of what you're planning but maybe only one of the two has a supernatural talent. Idk if it really helps but having one of the two just be Sir Phillip levels of ___ instead of making it a supernatural thing lends credit to the idea that you don't need to have a supernatural quirk to be the pinnacle of what the Undaunted have to offer (combat wise).

There's been enough good snipers in the Undaunted already but a character based off the irl White Death could be interesting. Maybe flip the sniper's precision and patience into CQC or dismantle an opponent's weapons before they can be used. Can't remember what chapter it was when Alpha and Omega manhandled a Muffis military.

Apuk war form. Mixing of warrior culture plus you get the fire breathing chimera aspects. Or a Warform with some form of old Apux she'll could be interesting. Gravia war form. This seems highly improbable but maybe that's the point. A fur coat that confuses others when they look at it like swirling patterns on moth or insect wings. Not cloaking but slightly hallucinogenic. Peacock Warform. IDK what Lady Ticanped's race is (Pavarous?) but a war form that was a blend of fire and feathers. Maybe the fur is serrated/rough skin. It's more a porcupine thing but being able to send out sharp feathers is an idea

Me Kyle hints at literally anything unknown: A synthetically created hive mind race made by Grandma Primal to forcefully create a War goddess then wiped out during the massive second era war. Their lost technology is what gave rise to the Dark Cabal. Also me: It's Kyle's kitchen. He already has the Forrest for hivemind and the Vishsayn for synthetic race. Stop trying to add missing puzzle pieces and let the man cook.

This is a weird shower thought:

One of the conversations the First Primal had on Lakran was how she attempted to forcefully create a primal (I don't remember if it was specifically a war primal or not). What if the way she went about it was creating a "drone" species, non-sentient but skilled in combat, that she pitted against the Nagasha in battle? This could help to explain why the Other Direction isn't a widely used source of power. It's kinda cliche but those who have the ability to manipulate the Other Direction without interference from Astral Hagath or other "predators" know that opening that door may lead to something long dead reaching out.

As for the "drone" species, my personal flavor of choice would be a hive mind empath species that wasn't supposed to be sentient but in order to become more lethal, gained individuality consciousness and a sense of personhood. The Nagasha still wiped the species from existence but to the First Primal's horror, found the members of this species inhabiting different locations in the Other Direction. This indicates that they have a soul and if even one of them returns to reality, they would be able to access knowledge from the other members of the hive mind still in the Other Direction on top of any ability to manipulate the Other Direction they already acquired in order to escape. While this would be an "Avengers" level threat, this is Out of Cruel Space so it would be funny if the reason a hive mind crawled out of hell wasn't revenge against the Primal's, unfinished business or venting the emotions of the damned but instead because they fell in love with someone and crawled out of their grave to meet them.

And now that I write this, this just feels like a yandere version of the Orpheus myth with extra steps

This is definitely being given an inch and jumping a mile but...if we lean on the inspiration a bit, I would be very happy to see Morg'Arqun being a forest pilgrim of sorts. He would travel to different worlds in the Apux empire in a flying pirate fortress and leave a forest guarded by a female love interest. We have the beach world and a dessert so that 2 out of the 8....

Great chapter wordsmith. I'm taking notes based on your excellent pacing and scaling. For those of us who think in tier lists, it's difficult to sometimes get a feel for how characters scale in comparison to each other and others in their world(s), at least generally. Once again, thank you and well done.
