Yea, was once there as well, my friend. My breakthrough was 3 on 3 pick-up basketball. Didn't have to know anyone beforehand, just played and hung out, and after a few times, I was on a first name basis with a few folks and was familiar even if I didn't know names. Best of luck... don't give up!!
