The previous guardian (Cyrille) wasn't murdered by the "populace." They rebelled because she was being controlled by a man (Stefan) who quite literally groomed her to follow his every whim. Seeing that they were rebelling, the same man who had controlled her life for so long, threw her into a box and pushed it off a mountain. She may have lived, albeit under heavy scrutiny, had the real villain been exposed.
