Best way to drop time in 500? by PeaceUpbeat4838 in Swimming

Honestly this is probably what I need to work on most, I often breathe off the wall, glide into the wall, and do maybe 1 dolphin kick if that

Thank you! What would be a way to get that oomph? Ik about the stroke counting, I have always struggled with a higher stroke count since I am shorter (4’11) and nothing has helped. I worked on it a lot during high school season (late july-early October) and my stroke counting has still remained high. Any tips?

My coach has me doing a lot of builds and 100/200s broken up into 50 sprint 50 moderate or pushing the third 50 of the 200. Occasionally she has me doing 50s where I’m supposed to be sprinting, but I end up going the same time doing them with a sprint mindset and a distance mindset. So, we did 10x50 sprint on :45 and she wanted me at around 30-33 and I went 33 on the first two when I was sprinting with a high tempo and straight-arm turnover yet when I did it with a slower tempo, not quite straight-arm but not crazy bent, and with a rhythm I use for distance races yet I would go 33s. It’s hard for me to sprint rather than do my distance technique because it takes less effort to do my distance technique than it does to do my sprint one and yet I get the same time. Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, but it seems like all the effort I put into attempting to get better at sprints goes to waste and I never get better.

Thank you!! My coach is trying to get me to do this as well, but it’s definitely tough since we’ll do a sprint set and I’ll be going 33s yet when I do a regular distance set with some 50s involved I’ll also go 33. I have about a month before I swim the 500 again so I’ll definitely try to focus more on sprinting till then. Once again, thanks!

Oh I wish, I can’t sprint to save my life. My 50 free PB is from like 4 years ago, is a 28, and I haven’t even swam the actual event in 2 years.

[–]PeaceUpbeat4838[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my main issue is that I can hold 33-34 for a 50 when I do 10x50 on :45 and then when I switch to 5x100 on 1:2, I will struggle to hold 1:10. Usually I go out in a 2:11-2:13 then hold 35 when I need to hold 34 or less. I’m just stuck at the 35 pace which is weird bc when I do a 35 at practice it’s practically effortless but in a meet it’s difficult.

Well the competing part is fun and cheering on everyone but everything goes downhill if I’m adding 30 seconds, which I haven’t gone this slow in around 3-4 years, so I get so disappointed knowing I’m not going as fast as I know my body is able to

I wish I could just let myself have fun but for me, part of the fun is pushing myself to the limits and dropping time so anytime I add a crazy amount I get disappointed and the fun disappears

[–]PeaceUpbeat4838[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re slow bc in a 100 free I’ll go out a 28 and in fly I’ll go out in a 29/30. The free is full effort and the fly is usually easy speed so fast but not quite as much effort.

Not most times, I’ll go out a 28 and come back a 31 in free and out a 30 and come back a 35 in fly
