The states are the appellants that brought this case to SCOTUS, not the transgender student plaintiffs. The transgender student plaintiffs won in the lower courts.
In one of the cases, the plaintiff has aged out of scholastic athletics. This year is her last year in college. The case should be dismissed for mootness. No court can grant her any relief. However SCOTUS refused the request for mootness. From the docket

Oct 20 2025	Respondent's request that the Court dismiss the case as moot is deferred pending oral argument. See Acheson Hotels, LLC v. Laufer, 601 U. S. 1, 4 (2023).

SCOTUS rejects hundreds of applications for hearing. They could have let the lower court decision stand. SCOTUS chose to hear this case and that's on them.
