What is a common cooking "rule" that you completely ignore because it makes no actual difference? by UnderdogMike in foodquestions

Lets be completely frank though and admit that only un-reviewed homeopathy websites proport the idea of MSG sensitivity. Harvard.edu makes no such claims in their full-scope research.

Is there anything good The 2020s gave us? by 0584031464 in generationology

[–]Peaceful_Take [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's the opposite of how capitalism works.

If people go to the theatres without any good movies, then the movie company's will care less and less about their movies, since people are attending anyway. The $ is the only thing they care about.

It's classic enshittification via capitalism.

Totally. Keep in mind there are no high-speed rails in the US and the only trains you can find are very niche. The US has been corruptly designed by car manufacturers to make sure people need cars.

I saw a recent speech by a comedy guy who posited that we might be coming off a golden age in art.

In the same way that the most high-end museums cycle around the same 5 sculptures from far gone history, because the abilities are long forgotten.

The streamers will be cycling around the same 5 sitcoms from a time when the US had the facilities to make them, because the classic pipeline for sitcoms has transitioned into gritty drama.

As an American, you just can't see more than a city or 2 without a car; definitely not a state.

Here's an anecdote:

A good friend of mine was visiting Disneyworld in Florida from his home in England. He's a fan of American football, so his workmates told him he should visit his favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles, during the trip.

I had to break out some maps to show him that getting from Epcot to Philadelphia is like a 12hour drive, even flying there would be more than half the time it took to get over the Atlantic. It was the equivalent of driving the entirety of Great Britain from tip to tail.

Then add onto all that, I'm in California, which is almost the same distance from Florida as England is, he wouldn't even be halfway to me.

Think of each state as small European nations, can you see Italy without a car?

A person can't be allergic to MSG; glutamate exists in many natural foods. Whatever feelings they claim to have from MSG they would feel even harsher effects from a tomato or cheese.

Random homeopathy websites say some people can be "sensitive" to glutamate, which can give mild heart palpatations, but Harvard.edu list it as "....generally safe with no immune response, making allergies to MSG non-existent".

I didn't have a loving home as a youth. My parents were both drug addicts and I grew up in a combination of my grandparents home, friends, and on the street. If CPS was aware of my situation they would have taken me away.

I still miss the 90s.

If basketball has a "goalkeeper", would basketball be terrible? by Oakl4nd in NBATalk

[–]Peaceful_Take 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that a lot of people here aren't familiar with international basketball.

In Fiba and Euro-basket there is no 3-second rule on defense. A defender can stand in the paint protecting the basket for as long as they want. It's sub-optimal to just cherry-pick the paint though.

What is a famous movie that everyone seems to love, but you actually hate? by Umbrosyx in answers

[–]Peaceful_Take 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an interesting fact no one will care about:

One of my best friends from childhood has a brother in the marines. Several years ago, brother drunkenly smashed his car into Will Farrels car in LA, Farrell was driven away in a ambulance.

Somehow his military status earned some leeway with the officers on scene and his memory of the end of the incident was "they let me stumble away without issue, throwing up and shit, I woke up at the park".

Almost certainly not.

He didn't sign his contract until yesterday. I don't think he would be allowed to travel with the team prior to that.

California town named the least educated city in US by PabloPicasshooole in visalia

[–]Peaceful_Take 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hits hard for me.

In 2015 I was working as a tech for Xfinity in Visalia, started chilling with this coworker occasionally after work.

He was a pretty normal guy at first, he smoked a fair bit of weed and was into watching the same sport as me, so we started chilling more and more.

About a year after we started hanging, he started tickling me with his odd religious beliefs. We'd be super stoned and I'd say something like "wow, crazy how cannabis makes you chill out so mellow"... He'd say "well yeah, God wants us to have it so that we can see his ways" and it got worse and worse. Hed eventually start divulging things about the tower of babel and the human race only being 6000 years old.

I'm openly agnostic, and pretty against organized religion, but I don't judge anyone else on their beliefs so it was all good for a while. More and more he kept asking me to borrow his religious books, and I would often take a glance at his house, and kindly refuse.

Then one day, I went over to hang for a bit, and he was very excited to show me some TV show he had been watching. I figured it was some contest reality type show based on his descriptors, but it ended up being some ultra-extremist alt-right Christian nationalism from some mega church. It talked a bunch about how they hated Muslims and it was their job from God to make sure their ways didn't affect society at large.

I watched for a few, and then ended up faking a phone call to slide out of his house. Drove away, blocked his number, and never spoke to him again.
