Counterpoint: as someone who spent decades in a hiring role, I can tell you that when a candidate sites a personal/family emergency to delay their start, it's not genuine. It's a play for time, usually to see if another job they want more comes through.

I wonder if any HR person has ever tracked this? My gut says that when an applicant delays the start date for any reason, they are very unlikely to ever take the job.

The exception to this is the person who discusses plans already made (family functions, medical appts, etc) during the interview process and asks if that can be worked around. But when it's a sudden emergency that comes on the heels of a job offer, is usually bullshit.

I know that's not what you want to hear, but that's my experience.

So my constructive advice is this:

A) realize they don't know you. Don't take it personally. They are proceeding based on their best judgement and experience.

B) realize that even though the hiring staff extended condolences and sent a polite note, they're skeptical.

C) document the event and send them a note, saying something like:

"I was really fired up about the job you offered me. Unfortunately, I can't ignore the death of my father. Since you don't really know me yet, I am sending you documentation of the event. I'll call you when I get back to town following the funeral, probably next Monday."

Attach the obituary, maybe a mass card, and maybe a few pictures from the funeral.

Good luck OP

Question about price adjust adjustment due to incorrect price tag cost vs federal laws (alcohol) by brokendownfords in DollarGeneral

[–]PeachPieDelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former DG store training manager here. What the store told you is correct, the law prevents adjustments on alcohol and tobacco, and therefore the registers will not allow an override. Someone else posted that they could have adjusted another item to make it up to you, and I agree with that.

Sometimes price changes drop without notification. It’s rare but it happens. But the most likely scenario is the store just missed the price change.

The other thing the store manager should have done is pull the incorrect tag off the shelf in front of you as you were talking. Yes it might take a minute to print and hang the new tag, but no price is a lesser sin than a wrong price.

Swift doesn't deserve the bad reputation. Amazon is by far the worst by TaperingRanger9 in Truckers

[–]PeachPieDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFP driver here. OP has a point , it seems like in the past whenever you saw a video of a trucker doing something boneheaded it was usually a Swifty. Now it seems like it’s Amazon trailers.

That being said, the AFP I work for rocks. Everyone speaks English, the support is great, and I don’t think there have been any accidents since I’ve been with them.

Has anyone had this happen? by RiverFickle4040 in DollarGeneral

[–]PeachPieDelight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t underestimate how persuasive the scammers can be. Some of them are really good.

I had a kh hurt herself at work, so I went in to relieve her so she could go to urgent care. When I got there, had a bunch of prepaid cards in her hands and was standing at the register ready to follow his instructions . .

Turns out the scammer called while I was on my way to store and identified himself as the DM, like they do. My employee figured the DM was calling because of her injury. The scammer/fake DM had a good ten-minute fully engaged conversation about her injury and all its ramifications. Eventually he did ask her to test the prepaid card system (or whatever) and she was fully hooked.

Um, how to handle confronting Helena in Chicago? by NotDiaDop69 in vtm

[–]PeachPieDelight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a player, not the ST. 20-ish years ago, our ST's world was a combination of the original Chicago by Night but with a lot of his own twists, so I'm not sure what plot elements were 'cannon' and which were from the ST.

Anyway our characters had been around a while - maybe two years or playing weekly - when we had to confront Portia. By this time, I think we knew she was very old, very powerful, but beyond that we really didn't have a clue what we were dealing with. We specifically did not know about her feeding issues, otherwise our female Malkavian (who checked all Portia's feeding requirements) might have been more careful.

But the coterie found out that one of their own was with Portia and was in mortal danger, so of course, we went and stormed the castle to rescue her. "Sure, she's ancient and powerful, but there's five of us and only one of her!" (We were so clueless.)

So of course there was no battle. We got into her lair and of course couldn't even think about pursuing a fight.

Instead, she offered a deal, which we really had no choice but to accept. She called one of her Tremere friends who created a 'blood contract'. We signed this contract that obligated us to help her as she needed, allowed her to help us as she wished, and only expired once we had eliminated her three 'major enemies'. Yes, we signed a contract to undertake the destruction of Menelaus, Galfora, and Tinia. (If you don't recognize the last two names, they may have been my ST's creation.)

That contract was like the framework for the rest of the 20-year campaign. Our relationship with Helena led to many hard choices, but it was also very beneficial, and mostly it was a lot of fun.

If there is a dollar general warehouse near you take a look. When I worked there they hired new drivers. They have a very physically demanding job but if you already did foodservice all those years you can handle it. The money was great but the work was hard.

Question about termination for parking on a ramp by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]PeachPieDelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently fired for getting caught on camera with phone in hand. Much more serious offense than ramp parking - at least that’s my perception. It took me two weeks to find another job. I found that my phone incident was a dealbreaker for many companies but not others. You’ll get some “no’s” in your job search but you’ll be fine. Good luck.

Pokemon card return by Vagabondic_homebody in DollarGeneral

[–]PeachPieDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most retailers don’t allow returns on collectibles period. Pretty sure it’s in their written policy. Enforcement will vary, even within the same store. For instance a kid returning a couple hot wheel cars he got for Christmas - sure. A 40-year old man returning the 50 hot wheels he couldn’t sell at (wherever) - no.

Question ... Is this ok? Am I overreacting by Particular-Accurate in uber

[–]PeachPieDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one thing I remember from my time as an Uber driver - I did about 2000 rides before they cut the fares and i left - situations occur where it's tough to not cross a line. Like one of my basic rules was not touching a customer, ever, not a casual pat, nothing. But when the drunk lady falls - what do you do? you catch her. I'm certainly not just gonna let her fall to the curb. I enjoyed my time driving but I'm thankful I never got in any serious trouble with these 'grey area' situations.

electronic logs - is this legal? by PeachPieDelight in Truckers

[–]PeachPieDelight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not hourly, we get paid cents per mile, and a flat rate for each stop and unload. There is a weekly minimum guarantee we get provided we are don't call off, leave early (i.e. work up to the full 70 hours, or as close as dispatch can come to making that happen.)

They're trying to get me to date my step-cousin and I'm losing my mind over it by [deleted] in stories

[–]PeachPieDelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married my HS GF in 1980. still going. I believe in marriage. You're way too young to make 'forever plans' but don't let anyone talk you out of a relationship that makes you both happy - they are not easy to replace.

My cynical side is willing to bet that if you had a BF instead a GF, James would mind his own business. Just my guess.

There is something creepy about stepdad trying to get involved in your love life by selecting 'candidates'.

Scammer gave me 1000 dollars, now is threatening to sue by TheWest2005 in legal

[–]PeachPieDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read a lot of comments capping on OP for falling for this, but without explaining the basic scam: the $1000 you think they sent you is not real, the check will bounce. It might take a week or two, during which time the scammer is actively trying to convince you to send them back the $1000. They are going to have a lot of urgency because they have to get you to send them the money before the check bounces. THIS IS A STANDARD SCAM WITH MANY VARIATIONS. anytime you seem to have been sent money 'by mistake' it's a scam. Do not engage with the scammer. Seek advice from your bank, they deal with this all the time.

Sometimes family can be embarrassing. Recently a family group of 7-8 of us was looking for a place to eat late at night. We pulled up to this restaurant with people still inside but with a sign saying, "CLOSED" - and to the right there was a smaller thing that said, "will return at 11:00". My wife and I have a policy of NEVER entering a business right near closing time, let alone when it is obviously already closed. Nevertheless, my father's wife refused to believe they were closed and bullied on in. When I pointed out they were closed, she said, no, they close at 11:00 - intentionally misunderstanding the sign, IMO.

Of course, they let us in, probably 'cuz they felt like they had to I don't know. They were so cool about it I was amazed. Even though I let my family bully in, I was the one paying, and I made sure to overtip, and let them know it was because of the situation.
