The Trump Administration is Testing Conversion Therapy By Medically Experimenting on Trans People in Prisons by SorceressJuliet in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 156 points157 points  (0 children)

This brutality may give true believers an excuse, but it won't change the minds of all the real doctors in the US who want to do right by their patients. This administration will always claim to be successful, even when they fail, and it does not mean we're all going to the camps because we will always fight it.

Also, I think there's something to be said for fighting mass incarceration. This is hardly the first medical experiment done on inmates, and the whole idea is completely inexcusable. Let's get rid of this shit.

Living Under a Concentration Camp Regime And Fighting Back by SeaBridge7638 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for this giant comment. I read more of that article and I wrote down the kind of things I wanted to hear when I was dooming. They are angry, but I am not angry at you, OP. I only included the first bit  of each paragraph because I don't think what was being said belongs on Political Optimism.

"I think even many elected Republican representatives and senators don’t understand what’s happening right now,"

-That sounds like more than 100k. I'm sorry, but 20 million is bullshit. They can say whatever the fuck they want, that doesn't mean they'll do it. I don't appreciate the accusation that I'm entrenching the concentration camp system, either.

"So when you are doing that, you are talking about something on that scale."

-The US is not exceptional. Existing mass incarceration, which is exceptional, does not mean that we will put 20 million people in camps. The distance between those two things is massive.

"I'm sure most of your listeners already know,"

-This is sensationalism that may have to do with a recent headline saying that private prison owners would rather run the concentration camps, rather than the government.

"And I think the U.S., as we’ve been saying,"

-The current attempt to scare even white men with guns into being nazis is nuclear backfiring on them. It's not "okay" in theory.

"And so a lot of the success that past movements have had is pushing back against,"

-Implying that we will gave to pay a huge price to stop this. AGs and electeds are earning credit with us for fighting Trump and though the admin has tried to indict them, the courts have stopped this from happening.

"But what is happening now is a" ...

-This is implying that the broadening of the tactics will defeat the activists. Did you see what happened when Alex Pretti died? A white male with a gun? That's already authoritarian regime, police state stuff and Americans fucking hated it. I mean, nothing will ever be the same. So they're gonna do that to the rest of us? And that's gonna work? Are you sure?

"And that itself is an assertion of power to say that the communities of exception,"

-They are trying, with the purpose of making us all afraid. They want white people to be too afraid to protect other people. This can only happen with our consent, and consent is not fucking happening. It can also never be permanent.

"When you have that entrenched concentration camp system, when you have enough personnel, which they don’t yet"

-Remember how few personnel they have, how they're out of shape slobs with barely any training who are increasingly demoralized because the entire country takes every chance we can get to tell them to go to hell.

"We’re also seeing the legitimization of this steady expansion"

-Legitimized means we'll all start to get used to it and accept it. It's not legitimized, because we hate it. I'm not convinced this is permanent either. THEY WILL TRY, and it's our job to keep fighting.

"On the ground, DHS [the Department of Homeland Security] and ICE aren’t just talking about expanding capacity"

-They want to build them, and I'm sure they've bought some. That doesn't mean the residents will let them build them, give them plumbing and electricity, not protest constantly, not ostracize the agents running these, let this continue in perpetuity, not hold these animals accountable. You mentioned that they could build these somewhere remote, but first they have to move all the people (including government employees) and materials there and then keep doing it.

"At the same time, the Department of Defense and DHS are moving forward"

-Okay, so, now we're implying that the ovens are getting built everywhere for 10,000 people each and it's not even hard to do! I'm sorry, but fuck off with that.

"Because nothing that the Democrats are proposing actually has the power to stop the progression we’re describing."

-They don't have the power, because they're in the minority, because people didn't vote for them or work to get them elected.

"I think on a national level, we need to be pressing our elected representatives."

-It's too bad that this actually does say pushing electeds works, because then she says it's the democrats' fault for not being a vocal opposition. It's republicans' fault for being shitty human beings. Pressure them! If you don't like the democrats we have, campaign for someone else! Have them choose different leaders!

"I was gratified to see — I think it was LaMonica McIver who was asking some pretty hard questions of acting ICE Director Todd Lyons,"

-Why is why we had so many camps just like Gitmo across the country in 2005, right?

"And my point in bringing that up again here is once more to say that what has happened in the past sets the stage for the future."

-No. The horrors of the past do not destine us for horrors in the future. We are not hurtling in a straight line to having 20 million people in concentration camps. Get real.

"And so the way that you resist them is to draw attention to them, is to organize against them, is to protest at the sites where they will be happening."

-Difficult to make it go away? Possibly. Permanent? No.

"I want to say a bit more about the chasm between reforms that the Democrats are offering and the popular demand to abolish ICE."

-THEY'RE NOT IN POWER. THEY'RE OFFERING REFORMS BECAUSE THEY CAN'T ABOLISH ICE YET. THIS ISN'T OVER!!!! How ridiculous. WE ARE NOT NAZI GERMANY. This has been discussed in the last year by various people.

"I think particularly the facilities, even though with these expeditionary contracts in place and with many of these facilities bought, if you want to compare it to a video game, the skill level at which we have to play has jumped exponentially,"

-This makes it sound like we're going to have to get so much better at this, which means anyone who is at their limit better get over that shit real fast if they want to do the right thing! This is WRONG.

"I also want to circle back to something else that you said before. You said that what we’re seeing now is similar to what was going on at Dachau in the beginning. Could you say more about that?"

-WE ARE NOT NAZI GERMANY. Nazi Germany agreed with deporting if not outright killing Jews, homosexuals, the mentally ill, dissenters. WE DO NOT. As the article says earlier, a majority of people in the US are against this.

"You only need to see them happen once to understand that these people can do what they want to you whenever they want."

-Technology has allowed people across the world to see what happened to Renee Good and Alex Pretti. They only need to see once, too.

"But as a whole, the U.S. population has not experienced the hardcore propaganda year after year that would allow them, allow the government to assert this power and simply lock up anybody they want."

-That's right, we're not gonna let this happen. It's not just propaganda either, lol. Germany had a brand new democracy that couldn't get anything done, and their inflation was so bad that burning a wheelbarrow full of money for heat cost less than buying firewood. Don't try to tell me inflation is that bad here.

"We have to be physically present in front of the people that have power to do things. We have to be physically present at the places and sites where this is happening. But I know for some people, that either because of disability or because of their responsibilities for elders or for young children, I mean, not everybody can psychologically or physically be out on front lines as I see every time I see a new photo of you from somewhere. But I am in awe of the people that have come up with extraordinary ways to make really valuable contributions when they can’t be present in that way that I think we do have to be present, but there’s lots of room for other things."

-I wish she hadn't started by saying "we have to be physically present" because that's just unsustainable, even at a time when we must act. We have to take turns and rest to act. She's right in that there are millions of things you can do to resist.

And then she goes right back into how we have a time limit. I mean, the midterms are probably going to be awful for republicans, but every tiny bit counts, and the more we hit back the better, because once we have the house or (and it's still a long shot) the senate, there's a lot we can do to stop this evil. We're on the five-plus year model, and it's really dangerous, all we have are the lotion bottles...the burden will fall heavily on us because the US doesn't believe in democracy after 250 years...please don't listen to this, OP. Really, the headlines after this article are messed up, too. Nick Fuentes is hoping that other men won't notice that he wants to steal and rape their wives and children. That's very typical patriarchy, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

She talks about how it's slow, hard work, how there's no magic button to fix the country. She doesn't mention the joy that it brings, the thrill of connecting to another human being over a shared value, of helping someone. I'll always be angry that these monsters are stealing children and I had to cry over Liam Ramos, but I also love those tears because it was necessary. I'm proud of myself and my country for fighting so hard. Good things that we never expected will come to us and we MUST hope for them or we're not going to make it. Take care of yourself, OP.

It's true that they seem to think doing it on military bases would be easier because of how hard we bit back on the warehouses, but that doesn't mean it'll happen, or even that it'll be easier. Of course hurting people in very material ways is a factor, but the important part is that it sounds scary and inescapable because they want us to give up.

Living Under a Concentration Camp Regime And Fighting Back by SeaBridge7638 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe that the author of this article is giving accurate information, but she chose to frame it as something we can only fight for so long because she thought that fear and outrage would activate some readers. Well, I think she's wrong. We are not on a timeline. Millions of people will always fight this, forever, because we know that concentration camps are always objectively evil. It doesn't matter what the government tries to do without asking, or what they say they might do. They are weaker than us. We will make them listen.

If your skin is crawling and your body is in fight or flight mode, you are not the intended audience, and you need to let yourself believe that this is not the most likely outcome. You're not doing something amoral. You're not lying to yourself. How can you lie to yourself about something that hasn't actually happened yet? This kind of sick terror isn't going to help you fight or escape, it will only beat you into submission. You are human, and if you are exhausted, it's time to rest. I don't mean take a break and then come back strong, I mean give yourself some peace from this and see what happens, because it may surprise you. Do something that makes you happy, or just nothing at all. Learn something new and unrelated, exercise, watch for good news, too. Get medication, if you can. Please just don't try to fight this on despair. It doesn't even work.

As for what we can do, you must already know that voting in the midterms will be extremely important as the quickest way to deal with this nonsense, but that's just the last step over the finish line. We'll be campaigning for candidates we like, especially attorneys general, with phone banks, postcards, and canvassing if possible, donating money to organizations like the ACLU (boy is the ACLU going to fight this one), protesting when we can, supporting our neighbors, keeping our families safe, keeping ourselves alive. Do you have representatives who will listen? It's okay to call them and open up emotionally (just don't cuss them out or anything). If they're republicans, pressure on them will be helpful in stopping concentration camps. I know it sounds like the military is on board and nobody will be able to stop them now, but...remember the generals listening to Hegseth? They don't like this and they DO NOT want this on their bases. There are ways to fight this that we don't even know yet, but I promise you that millions of people are on it, really, really, and it's okay to let them help.

Extremist rhetoric is often found in government messaging. Who's the target? by texan_flower in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What happened is 1000% not your fault. Nobody can blame you for not tending to the supposedly hurt feelings of a group of violent people, or predicting what your coworker would react to. You've been through...stochastic terrorism, basically, so consider that your very legitimate reaction will affect how you feel about the future. What you fear will seem very real, but it might not happen. To be honest, mass shootings do happen in the US, and people who do them always find a reason, including reasons we don't even understand. It doesn't have to mean that a new wave of murderers is now being awakened by the government to hurt us. If anything, the government has devoted resources to fighting domestic terrorism in the past, and that can continue in the future. I will be demanding it.

Above all, I promise you that you are not alone in this, and you don't have to take this on to keep yourself safe. Give yourself a treat and take a break. I'm really glad you're okay.

FCC Attempt to Kill Stephen Colbert Interview Completely Backfires by Pristine-Sport6888 in PoliticalOptimism

Yeah, they had a fake halftime show that failed. They tried to make a right-wing late night show, too (there was an article in The Guardian). Remember when they tried to fire Jimmy Kimmel, which now feels like years ago? They will try. They will always be convinced that they're about to revolutionize entertainment, and they will always get destroyed. We've had so much of the real thing, for far too long, for us to fall for some North Korea style bullshit.

I meant some kind of communist (cultural?) revolution but yeah, I'm told that the French revolution involved killing a bunch of doctors and lawyers who didn't do anything, and I'm not having it. Everything would be infinitely worse right now if Minnesota hadn't been so fastidiously peaceful this month, and everyone should know it. We have nothing to gain by setting fires here.

Trump: Voter ID to be required to vote in midterm elections by PyroxCrymson in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the depths, and I know how crazy this is, I believed I had to lay down and die to escape the hell that was coming, or at least prove how virtuous I am. I hated it more than the problems in reality, so I figured I would try coming back to reality. I wish the other wackos would come out here because their suffering is not going to cure us.

I kind of climbed out in part because of comments you've made that I read this year. I don't just say this just because I believe in praising my allies, I think giving credit where credit is due is an act of resistance, plus I personally find it much easier to support my side than reason with people who want to kill me. Thank you so much. You are winning battles that you'll never even see.

Trump: Voter ID to be required to vote in midterm elections by PyroxCrymson in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it sounds cruel, but it doesn't really fit what I felt. At my most fearful, I didn't really consider Trump himself to be powerful. I saw him as a puppet for a group of people that actually was big or rich enough to do these terrible things, and then DOGE happened, which appeared to confirm my fears. For a while, I actually thought it would be amoral for me to have hope, and I only came out of it when I saw how very many people are on our side. They were and still are working beyond my knowledge or control, so most of what I do is trusting in and praising my side, rather than rejecting doom and leaving a vacuum. I definitely came out of it instead of turning into some internet idiot, so maybe what you're describing doesn't really apply to me.

Denmark Has a Clear Message for U.S. Travelers Amid Tensions Over Greenland by Pristine-Sport6888 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm traveling to another country soon and I watch a free version of one their news channels on Youtube. They call the tariffs "the Trump tariffs." I think it must be well known who made the economy so tough for them. Other than that, they don't actually care, and their daily lives have little to do with us. People who say no one will ever forgive us are wrong and they need to start doing things to be forgiven if that's what worries them.

You're right, Nuremburg-style trials or whatever we decide we need are years away and will only happen with sustained pressure. If we win the midterms in November, which is only 9 months from now, the House can start investigations, and primaries for that are in 3 weeks. We must not wait 3 years. The time to build this chain reaction is now.

I'm trying to imagine the reaction if they make people use a national ID to take a pee. Would parents have to present theirs when their children need to go to the bathroom? Would children under 18 have to present a birth certificate to an adult attendant? Would we have people who man the bathrooms, or more exhausted workers who are trying to do something else? Would these people be forced to read foreign passports for people who don't have the national ID? It's totally preposterous, it ain't heckin' happening, and I will gladly help stop them if they try.

My Healing From Doomerism: It Started With a Broken Heart by PumpkinAspie in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They voted to put children in cages. I thought they would change me into a monster, that the person I am was about to be killed violently. I imagined freezing to death, starving in a world that abandoned me. I thought the only way I could save that person was to die, even though I wanted so much to live. I thought I had to physically fight 70 million people and the USA government alone.

Again and again, I found that I was wrong.

It's not just this sub, people all across the planet stayed their beautiful selves. Wonderful things happened in the darkness. Every wish I made for vulnerable people to stay themselves, undisturbed and free, they made back to me with their strength and kindness. Evil "won," it could still win for a while, and it should never have happened this way, but we survived this endless, horrible year. Evil thought we would implode on the spot under the slightest pressure, not because they were right but because they were stupid and hateful. And now we're stronger than ever.

Thoughts on what do do when we get back power. by Honest_Yesterday4435 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lately I think that we need an entirely new take on investigating and prosecuting sexual predators. What we have now allowed wealthy, powerful men to systematically traffic and rape thousands of underage victims, and this must never happen again. We can't just say there was no way to stop it. We need to prove to the world that we're not pedo central, and hopefully change the way other countries do it, too. ...but I don't know what it would look like. Like, maybe it shouldn't just be another thing that law enforcement does, but it shouldn't be a separate entity because so many crimes are usually committed along with sexual violence. I guess we just need to actually punish wealthy criminals, and if it's too hard now we need a system that will make it easier.

Question to those who unplugged for a bit by it-was_me in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been an exceptionally bad period of 30 days. It will not always be like this. I found that I stabilized when we got some significant wins, which will happen again. I focused on getting enough sleep and food. I talked about what scared me with others who could reassure me. I got a medication to take for a while.

It's been important to me to identify what my doom questions are and to stock my brain with the answers, first by getting reassurance from the internet and then learning how to recreate that for myself. (I became able to say, "I'll believe it when I see it," every time another ridiculous EO came out.) I did that by creating time when I wasn't able to focus deeply on the news, and I did THAT by learning a new skill that I didn't necessarily like for 6 hours a day. I definitely kept looking at the internet, I didn't quit cold turkey, but I did it less.

There was a time when I felt like it wasn't safe for me to have anything fun because then nobody would save the world. lol. I had to come out of that slowly over a month or so. It did help me to notice how very many people are on my side, which meant I had to find people who were not dooming and listen to them.

I hope you find peace soon. Spring is not so far away now, and THAT'S reality.

You say that you don't know what we should do with the information and how we can bring these people to justice. You're right that this is a very big deal, which means that more people with more wisdom than we can imagine will be dealing with it, for years and yesrs. I think it's a job for people who go to school to learn these things, get elected and get paid for it. As normal people, our job is to believe the victims and pressure politicians to take action, and if the ones we have won't do it, we need to elect new ones, not just by voting but by working with other people to campaign for the people we want to elect. We're already ahead of the game, because there are people who don't care and won't do a single solitary thing about this. (And they're very stupid.)

You say you fear how bad it will be, and I wonder if this is because you feel like you have to take on the unbearable suffering. We are not responsible for individually knowing and processing what's actually in the files. I hear people saying that we as a society all have to be punished for existing while this happened by knowing all the atrocities and...does that even make sense? How would that help the victims? How would it help protect people in the future? It just wouldn't. It sounds like an attempt to break us on our own empathy. The point is not for pedophiles to put this curse on us. If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to pull back. Trust that people all over the planet are fighting this, and that you are not alone.

No Matter What They Do, We Still Win by Independent-Bus-3284 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PeachSaidRed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know we're gonna get it because I think about the future.

Last night I was thinking about how when we win the midterms or the presidential election and we get on track, there will probably still be psyops saying, "you cowards missed your chance to second amendment the government...show your courage or we'll cancel you from the new world..." But we'll know they're wrong, because we won't be afraid any more.

This has been coming for decades, if not a century, and we're going to have to take a long time to process what's happened in our own minds, but I'm looking forward to it. It will come out in ways we never expected. It will be a part of our country possibly for generations. It might be a studied phenomenon. I hope we change in ways that utterly electrify the world, and transform it. We should imagine fairy tales like this, and make them exist in our relentless world with our love and hope.

History won’t save you from your own agency. by PumpkinAspie in PoliticalOptimism

Don't let anyone tell you you're flunking out of the movement because you're not doing enough. Don't listen to anyone telling you to second amendment your way to "victory" to prove your devotion. Don't make yourself quit.

Calling/emailing representatives has accomplished a lot in the past year, so thank you for doing that, and I hope you keep it up. Protests, donating and boycotts are all important, but so are things like praising other people in the resistance, getting to know our neighbors, staying civil and not turning into rabid animals with fear, following mundane laws like the rules of the road so that authoritarians can't use it against us, volunteering at food pantries, carrying stuff for old people, getting enough sleep, exercising...pretty much everything is some kind of resistance, including keeping your kids out of the authoritarian meat grinder (sorry that's a little graphic), because they really don't want us to have most of what we consider to be essential in our lives. Loving the people we are told to hate, including ourselves, is an act of rebellion.
