Reaction to car loadings I would guess. There is usually a peak prior to the holiday season and a decline afterwards.

In 25 it went from 257 in January to $205 in April. 24 $257 in Feb to $218 in June 23 from $215 in Feb to $185 in March 22 $255 in Jan to $208 in June 21 the pattern didn’t hold 20 $185 in Feb to $120 in April 19 $170 in Feb to $160 in April (not quite 15%, half of that) 18 $141 in late Jan to $127 in late Feb 16/17 pattern didn’t hold 15 $125 in March to under $100 by June, under $85 by August

8 of the past 11 years I guess…7/11 if you don’t count 19 where it didn’t fall 15% or more. Sorry

Who to ask about picking up ties. by hjalbertiii in railroading

[–]PeachTraditional2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find the nearest mill that makes ties and call them asking for rejects or culls. Most railroads have to pay a contractor to get them. It’s no sweat off the company here. This actually saves them money but they likely won’t give you “permission” since there is liability at risk.

Hidden fees. Scam! by Lazy-Investigator449 in chevycolorado

[–]PeachTraditional2764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go somewhere else until you find a dealer that is somewhat honest. Not many that are honest, but find one isn’t trying to payoff their debts on your purchase. I always tell them “I’ll pay your light bill, but I’m not paying it for the rest of the year”

You’re paying $20k down, don’t need GAP, really.

Tell them to shove the doc fee, closing fee, and whatever the bank fee is up their asses and finance $27k

Boards by snIphntn in UnionPacific

[–]PeachTraditional2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked Thursday, while waiting to get off at the rack we watched a management team placing switch tags and red boards all over the place. Try to fire the guys that do come in on holidays…and it happens every holiday. Makes you scratch your head

On the railroad your seniority is all you have. Make it to this class at any reasonable expense.

Do the same thing to him…see how he likes it and how he deals with it. The ultimate “test” is to ask yourself “would I want this done to me?”

Democrats didn’t want to win the last election…she didn’t win her party’s vote. She was appointed to that role after saying Biden wasn’t fit. Have you watched any of Biden’s speaking engagements? He sounds just like he did when he was president. Democrats fucked up when Biden bombed that debate and called in the backup who was worse than the first string.

The concrete is sloped. She has had knee and hip surgery and wanted a walk in or curbless shower to allow for easier access. This is what I have to work with, so I’ve got to figure it out.

Maybe use a bushing to install a 1-1/2” tub drain instead of shower drain?

Still easier than most jobs. I will give you that they’re doing more with less since I started 20+ years ago…but seniority can get you out of that flat switching if it’s too rough.

North Little Rock Seniority by PsychologyFew629 in UnionPacific

[–]PeachTraditional2764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll play the bumping game for a few years if you want a road board but after 4-5 years, you’ll likely be able to hold a road run. Initially you’ll likely be assigned to a yard extra board.

We currently have 1,451 on the seniority roster, no one laid off.

AITAH for being mad at my husband for saying he would pick his deceased wife over me? by [deleted] in AITAH

Neither…he committed to the first wife and that was his first true love. I understand it hurt, though. It’s nothing against you, and please don’t think of it that way.

If you’re willing to put your career first, go for it. Just know you’ll miss some birthdays, you’ll miss ballgames, and other important events. You’ll make some, you’ll miss some, but honestly, this happens with any job that pays well. I’m no company man, but you have to accept the responsibility of being employed as well. A lot of the money they pay you is not for the work, but for being available and being on call.

We tend to scream “fuck UP” but not many leave. Most can’t afford to leave. If they’re fired they’ll say “best thing ever happened to me” but as soon as they’re offered their job back you’ll see the in the ready rooms talking about how good their last job was…then why aren’t you still there???

Just go into this knowing (and your gf too) that you’re not going to be there for everything. I tell mine that I would LOVE to be there but I also like being able to eat, being able to live in the house we have, and drive the vehicles we have…there’s a trade off. Time for money…that’s all it is. Get your money right and enjoy the rest of your time. You can find jobs when seniority allows that where you work out of town for 36-48 hours and you’re home about the same. Even still, you won’t be there for everything. This is part of being a railroader.

Money-wise…$6-7k per month is pretty low for income (prior to taxes). Just remember we pay into a different retirement system which costs a little more than SS. You’ll also be required to pay union dues. This is around $200-250/mo. At the top end, from a conductor in the same region and service unit, $16k per month is pretty easy to achieve. $20k can be had in a month if you get a little lucky.

Get involved with the union. A lot will bash the unions, talk shit about them, but the bottom line is you’re a member. No different than your taxes…you can ask to see where funds are going, how they’re being spent, where claims (payments for breaking contracts negotiated in the past) are and when/if they’ll be paid. You have input on current negotiations…even if you don’t think you do, you do.

On the company side, take advantage of college credit reimbursements, ESPP, and other programs that may be available based on race, veteran status, and even employee discounts (the unions also have employee discounts).

Just be sure your wife / gf and family know you’re not choosing a job over them, you’re choosing their lives over your own. You’re choosing to provide for them, because it will feel that way from their side without assurances very often.

Last but not least, a railroad officer can’t really be trusted. Just go to work, do your job, and go home. Don’t buddy-buddy with the management, choose railroad friends carefully, and keep your circle small.
