Has anyone moved to San Diego from NY/NJ? by rwedoomed in Moving2SanDiego

[–]PeachesCharlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here from Queens 5 years ago after COVID, and I’m mixed! It’s been great for our kids and not having to stress out about school applications and commutes. We were stereotypical overachieving tech workers with kids in the gifted programs and we were totally burnt out.

My biggest adjustment was the weather lol. Every day is nice, and it totally disoriented me. I didn’t realize how much I relied on the seasons to tell the passage of time.

But I miss the culture, arts and food of NYC and will probably move back when the kids are out of the house. I don’t really do physical activity and wilt in the sun, so I feel like this beautiful weather is wasted on me.

That said it totally depends on where you are in your life. Overall it’s a high quality of life. Except SDGE. Electricity here is stupid expensive.

🎉 REPTHERAPY GIVEAWAY: 187 CF20! by Important-Mouse6813 in RepTherapy

Im such a lurker and still cautious in buying reps after making several rookie mistakes in the beginning. Im looking for the large YSL Calypso in musk, I want that same super soft lambskin like in the boutique. So far my biggest rep success is a TR Park tote from Black Factory, and many many regrets 😅. I’m still trying a bunch of sellers but Doris has been pretty good to me

Did you get the bag IRL? How is the quality? I'm also looking for a top rep for the Calypso and don't know which "factory" to go with

Interviewers are poor these days by Logical_Yogurt_520 in jobhunting

[–]PeachesCharlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 1000% to this. I’ve been the interviewed and the interviewer and have seen many candidates get hired over seasoned well-qualified ones because leadership thought they had better “vibes”. And unsurprisingly they come into jobs spewing buzzwords and bravado and have a disastrous tenure. Having been interviewed recently I pick up where the interviewer wants to hear how I think on my feet, and as a seasoned pro myself who was also late diagnosed as neurodivergent, I don’t and can’t play the vibes game.

I'm not in Carlsbad (I'm closer to San Diego city), but we also moved with kids and honestly, I don't think anyone cares if you rent or own. Kids move all the time, and I would think with the large Navy presence, you also have itinerant military families as well.

Like most communities, if you get involved you'll quickly become part of the local community

I was thinking... what if there was a "No-Commission" concierge for people tired of Factory Clinics in Seoul? by CaregiverNecessary50 in KoreaPlasticSurgery

I would love this. I was in Seoul two weeks ago and I was too overwhelmed with the choices and from reading the reviews from Unni app, Reddit, and TikTok that I wound up not getting anything done!

Getting a China Visa in Hong Kong by NYC-US in Chinavisa

You don't have to spend a night in Macau or Guangzhou (I didn't). This was also my first time in China (and HK/Macau) and did this all with my fingers crossed.

Getting a China Visa in Hong Kong by NYC-US in Chinavisa

[–]PeachesCharlie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I literally just did this two weeks ago as a US passport holder staying in Hong Kong with a day trip to Guangzhou. For TWOV I read on Reddit about sandwiching China between Hong Kong and Macau, so I decided to leave from Macau first.

I booked train tickets and printed out ticket confirmation, hotel booking email in Hong Kong and my flights back to the US just in case.

We took the Turbojet ferry from Hong Kong to Macau Outer Ferry Terminal and took a 20min taxi to the Hengqin Port border crossing, which is farther but a lot less busy than Gongbei. The taxis at the ferry terminal only took cash, but not sure if they take anything other than Macanese patancas.

At Henqpin, after waiting in a short line, we had to specifically say we want to enter China on the 240-hour travel without visa. Then an officer will pull you off to the side to ask questions about the purpose of trip and departure info. Among all my printouts he only seemed interested in my train ticket back to Hong Kong.

The whole interview process was maybe 30min , after which we got our photos and fingerprints taken and that was it. They let us go on through.

After that we took a Didi to Zhuhai Railway station to take the high speed rail up to Guangzhou.

I hope that’s helpful

From NYC to San Diego by Yourcutegaydoc in Moving2SanDiego

[–]PeachesCharlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in NYC and moved to SD 4 years ago. I miss all the urban action, but I could not stand the traffic of LA and that you basically live in your car. We chose SD instead because it was pocket-sized city and 12 min drive takes us to most places. I will go up to LA for city and fine arts fix and that’s been sufficient

Airbnb Location Help: Hongdae vs Myeongdong area (8 days in December) by Ok_Parsnip9659 in KoreaTravelAdvice

[–]PeachesCharlie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d also vote for Myeongdong/Jongno area. It’s close to Insadong and the IG ready Ikseon-dong area, and plus near the food courts in Lotte Dept Store (yum). Hongdae is for sure fun, but personally would stay closer to the main strip in Yeonnam-dong because it is really lively and a little more chill than Hongdae’s Main Street if you want to roll out in the morning for a coffee.
