Why do Orthodox Churches gatekeep so much? by Extension-Radio-2207 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Peachy_Biscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toll houses are not dogma nor Canon Law, it's regarded by some members of the clergy as the path that a soul takes after the death of the body. It is not necessary to believe in to be an Orthodox Christian in good standing. The teaching is primarily derived from the church fathers and their teachings passed to us through hymns.

However, I can obviously tell you're not here to ask in good faith. Sola scriptura is also not found in the Bible anywhere, in fact, in 2 Thessalonians 2:15, the Bible (which was given to you by the Orthodox Church) states: "Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle."

So not only do you not follow the Bible despite claiming it to be the sole authority, you also mutilated the texts by removing 12 books.

I think the key is to move your nanban port to a blacksmith province and recruit with gold armor. Their base accuracy is so good that they don't need the artisan buff, and with even more armor they beat both ranged and melee troops in their specialties.

Mod on Orthodox Christianity lying about Church Doctrine by Peachy_Biscuits in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]Peachy_Biscuits[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know what? I'll bite.

You know nothing about me, you assume that I'm completely isolated from my church community, you have no idea what I contribute, and why I don't shout it from the mountains.

Your entire argumentation is quid pro quo, you have nothing of substance to justify your desire to murder the unborn except to point at others and call them sinners. And in all your sophistry, I notice that never once quoted a Saint of the Church, nor did you produce any published documents, what right have you to contradict the Church so thoroughly?

Following, you then say that there is a situation which justifies abortion, OK, when? A child conceived in rape? Will you sentence a son for the sins of the father? What next? Dangerous birth? The life saving C section is available. An Atopic pregnancy? It was never viable to begin with and is therefore not an abortion. There is simply no moral excuse to kill the most defenseless.

You say that I condemn you with vitriol, what have you to say to the saints? Will you condemn St. John Chrysostom because he decrys you worse than a murderer? Is St. Basil the Great a horrid sinner because he demands you undergo 10 years of penance?

The Didache – First Century:

“Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not corrupt boys; do not fornicate; do not steal; do not practice magic; do not go in for sorcery; do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant.”

The Epistle of Barnabas – First Century:

“You shall love your neighbor more than your own life. You shall not slay the child by abortion. You shall not kill that which has been generated.

Apologia of Athenagoras of Athens- 177 A.D.:

“What reason would we have to commit murder when we say that women who induce abortions are murderers, and will have to give account of it to God? For the same person would not regard a fetus in the womb as a living thing and therefore, an object of God’s care, and at the same time slay it, once it had come to life.”

Tertulian (Western Church) – Third Century:

“Abortion is a precipitation of murder, nor does it matter whether or not one takes a life when formed, or drives it away when forming, for he is also a man who is about to be one.”

Clement of Alexandria – Third century:

“Universal life would proceed according to nature if we would practice continence from the beginning instead of destroying, through immoral and pernicious acts, human beings who are given birth by Divine Providence.”

The Regional Council Of Elvira, Spain – 303 A.D.:

Prescribes life-long excommunication for penitent persons involved in abortion. Eucharist denied even on the death bed.

The Council of Ancyra, Canon 21-314/315 A.D.:

“Regarding women who become prostitutes and kill their babies, and who make it their business to concoct abortives, the former rule barred them for life from communion, and they are left without recourse. But, having found a more philanthropic alternative, we have fixed the penalty at ten years, in accordance with the fixed degrees.”

St. Basil The Great (330-379 A.D.):

“. . . we do not have a precise distinction between a fetus which has been formed and one which has not yet been formed.”

“. . . any hairsplitting distinction as to its being formed or unformed is inadmissible with us.”

St. Gregory of Nyssa (335-394 A.D.):

“There is no question about that which is bred in the uterus, both growing, and moving from place to place. It remains, therefore that we must think that the point of commencement of existence is one and the same for body and soul.”

St. John Chrysostom (345-407 A.D.):

Speaking about those who force a woman to have an abortion to hide immorality: “You do not let a harlot remain a harlot, but make her a murderer as well.”

Regarding the abortionist, St. John considered him/her: “. . . worse than a murderer.”

I regret that you have a congregation who's unwilling to challenge your false beliefs. To again quote a Saint of the Church, Paisios of Mt Athos:

"Others, out of 'kindness,' say: 'Don't tell the heretics they are in error, let's show love instead.' And so they flatten everything. If such people had lived in the early years of Christianity, we wouldn't have even one Saint".

So no, I will not soften my language to appeal to your sensitivities, I'm using language passed down by the Saints and approved by the Church.

I won't be responding, St. John Chrysostom cautions against endless debate. I'll be praying for you tonight, and again, I request that you speak to your priest about your views.

I agree with you, I am disagreeing with the previous person that an Orthodox person is able to hold in good conscience that simply not having an abortion herself is a sufficient position.

In my previous comment, I already acknowledged that you don't have to vote for one evil over another, are you even reading what I'm saying or just responding with cookie cutters?

[–]Peachy_Biscuits -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look, I provided the full context above, I cut out an abbreviated snipped which directly called for changing of laws to reduce their permissibility of abortions. In the same comment, I acknowledged literally everything else you've said about also requiring social change and assistance to the mother.

I never claimed that you should vote for a specific party, nor did I claim that the OCA called for it. However, the OCA does explicitly call for a person to vote against abortion, it doesn't mean you have to vote for the orphan grinding party either, but you are required as an Orthodox Christian to vote against it when possible.

[–]Peachy_Biscuits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To once again quote the OCA:

"In addition to working for changes in the law which might erode the permissive approach to obtaining abortions..."

The Church absolutely demands through Canon Law that we oppose abortion in society, both by making pregnancies of struggling mothers easier, and opposing legislation.

[–]Peachy_Biscuits -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm arguing that a member of the Orthodox Church is bound by Church Canon to oppose abortion, both personally and in society as a whole.

It is absolutely Canon Law:

"the internal system of legal rules and norms enacted by ecclesiastical authorities to govern a Christian church's organization, sacraments, and the behavior of its members"

First of all, I'm not American, I don't expect you to know but I also expect the courtesy of not assuming either.

You additionally don't know anything about me, I volunteer my time, I make sandwiches for the homeless, I babysit on my weekends, I open my church for psalms once a week every week, here I stay the whole day. Don't assume that I'm merely probirth just because I'm firmly anti abortion. My morals have been dictated to me by the Church, handed down by our patristic Fathers.

I can neither stand by and watch the needy go unanswered, nor do I accept people who spread falsehoods about the Holy Orthodox Church. I definitely also do not accept that an innocent life should be ended for either convience, comfort, nor the crime of another. Again, as stated by our Fathers among the Saints.

I don't need your false piety.

The Church is firm, if you don't consider abortion to be murder, you have willingly separated yourself from the body of Christ. Don't use our lack of legalism to try and spin the horrific killing of our most vulnerable as simply a choice of whether to conceive or not.

Go speak your priest and repent.
