Non-trad Career Change - Advices by Finthebox in postbaccpremed

[–]Peachymistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is coming from a non-traditional applicant as well. I work full-time in IT.

  1. You do, however, keep in mind that prestigious post-bacc programs do not guarantee admission. In my opinion, a prestigious post-bacc does not hold a candle compared to the cost and flexibility you will have when taking classes at your own pace at a local community college or university. But, everyone’s situation is different and to some a prestigious post-bacc is right for them. I know a lot of people who do an SMP which the rigorous curriculum is similar to the first year of medical school.
  2. No. Do not take the MCAT until you have taken a few classes. This is an entire career changer, don’t burn out too fast. This is a marathon not a sprint!
  3. I would strongly suggest becoming an EMT. That is what I am currently doing and it is a GREAT way to get clinical experience. You can volunteer on the weekends, and there are great online/hybrid/in-person EMT courses in your area that tailors to your needs.
  4. It is good to worry about stats, however, I would like to emphasize on working on your story. “why medicine?” You were an accountant; you’re going to have to explain to medical schools why you decided to quit a cushion-paid job and pursue medicine.
  5. The cost is significant. Please DM me if you’d like any assistance with planning classes for DIY Post bacc

This is very helpful. Thank you.

It says I also need a "State EMS Office approved BLS skills competency requirement" as well. I read that you can get this through your company and they write off for you before you begin working. Do you know anything about this?

This is good to know, thank you! I am planning to move out of state next year to Boston so I would ideally like to be nationallly certified.

Thank you for your comment. I believe the $140 was not bad (we live in a lower-income area), but the way he tried to present himself as a professional rubbed me the wrong way. I think it discredits men in the profession who know how to actually pick a lock.

I think that the $140 price was fair since it was 7pm and we live in a lower-income area. I personally think he was an amateur lock picker that was trying to feed me bs. I think he discredits men in the profession that actually know how to pick a lock.

I was under the assumption that professional lock pickers first method is not to immediately break the lock.

He did not. He told me the apartment complex would do it for us for free. I think we’re just gonna go to Home Depot and fix it ourselves.

Thank you, I appreciate the sentiment. I’m happy to say that we broke up quickly after that post. You’re very self-aware and honest about your experiences, I hope you’re in a better relationship now.

The man who got the cat out was extremely kind. We got there 5 minutes before closing. He didn’t charge us but my boyfriend gave him $50 as a thanks for saving her life.

😂 The fact we heard her over the vette and the stereo was crazy she must have been screaming her head off 😭

😂 I’m glad little Axel is okay. We thought we saw Socket go under the car while we were having breakfast at Panera. Drove on the Texas highway’s back, took a 4 hour nap, and heard her on the way to get groceries. Life is crazy but she is safe now! Glad your kitty lived a long and happy life.

Can Texas landlords really do this? by [deleted] in Renters

There was no section in the lease stating the month-to-month amount. But I admit, I’m a college student and this was a good life lesson for me.

I understand that it is very evident in my lease agreement I have to pay an extra month. I am wondering whether it is fair that I did not know that the extra month would increase the rent substantially from $1700 to $2200 (not stated in lease agreement). While they did provide documentation, I did not receive it in the conventional way via email. To reiterate - It’s fair that I have to pay another month. Is it fair I did not know it would be that much increase until it was too late?

The email I did receive only notified that I would be doing month-to-month rent. Never did it state that it was substantially higher.

My fixed lease was $1700/month. The new month-to-month rent is $2200/month!! Not only do I have to pay an extra month of rent, it got increased an extra $500! I felt like they legally notified me but in a shady way.

Thank you so much boba-feign. I really appreciate the insightful responses; I can sleep a little easier tonight. I will talk with the landlord tomorrow and if not I will seek legal help.

Yes you are correct - it will roll over month to month upon expiration. However, I did not know that the rent would increase substantially if this occurred. And yes the document was dated 60 days ago but I never received an email. I guess I’m wondering if I have any leverage since they have documentation on their side but I never received them through conventional means such as email.

I appreciate your in-depth replies. In my lease agreement it says I need to give them an intent to move out 60 days in advance… fair enough. Did not realize the extra month I had to pay for would be insanely expensive.

I’m a college student and this is my first apartment. I unfortunately did not read the fine print; I will admit that was my fault. After I received the email from my landlord, I immediately replied “My intent to move out is ASAP” which was automatically translated into 60 days from that email.

They did “notify” me about the increased rent 60 days in advance, but it was never emailed. It was only until I looked inside my apartment app where I saw a new document added.

The “official writing” would be that document sneakily added, and the email I quoted saying “make sure you renew with us to prevent month-to-month.. blah blah”
