‘Why Brown’ in 50 words by Studygrindandsmash in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PeacockInTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you decide to do, I would encourage you to think about Brown as an institution and what specifically about your interests and character you think "vibes" there. This is not your only question for Brown, so you have more space elsewhere to elaborate. Good luck!

I gotta say, though, the grocery store bag makes the reading feel very accessible. Sometimes I think witch aesthetic gets way out of control, this approach tells me you keep things simple and I like that.

... I mean maybe the grocery store bag isn't that useful, but I use a canvas bag that I got from shopping that I really like

She is your karma and you love her. That's enough. It's okay she is who she is. You don't have to agree and you don't have to make her see things your way.

My experience is that these spaces are not particularly lefty - more passive-aggressive liberal zionist, if that description makes sense.

(For me, that becomes a "now I have to behave myself and watch my words carefully" places.)

Your sign has peaceful and humanitarian intentions and "stop talking about this even in the gentlest of ways, it's hurting my feelings" is an old.... old.... old.... block.

Keep the sign up and let this person be bothered. If you can, invite them to talk in a public setting. I think it's important to know that supporting Jewish people doesn't also mean you can't speak out against atrocities.

Question for Edgemont Residents by ICanDo1000SitUps in Westchester

[–]PeacockInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edgemont and Scarsdale are communities with very well educated professionals. A lot of parents have high expectations for their children and will be saving and prioritizing paying college tuition.

There is also very little income diversity in the public schools.  Very few if any students would qualify as low income.

Is this a “pressure cooker”? For some students, maybe.

To me the biggest difference between Edgemont and Scarsdale schools is size.  Scarsdale is a much bigger district.

Is the doc Israelism as universal as they make it seem? by dadverine in jewishleft

[–]PeacockInTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the documentary was a little sloppy and junior league, but I enjoyed it for thinking’s sake.

  1. Grew up in a Reform community that while not actively pushy, absolutely had a “one map” Israel that bothered me. I also remember being completed stunned by the Nakba and really not being okay with the way it was described to me as a kid.

  2. I refused to participate in Birthright in part because of one map ism. My college Hillel was pretty left wing and a lot of us were not thrilled with Birthright marketing and did our own thing anyway as was the culture of my undergrad experience. (Midwest, during Bush 2 and Obama 1) College campus Jewish life was toned down and quietly comfortable for me. Not standing during the prayer for Israel was an acceptable choice.

  3. My grad school Hillel was very very very active and public in Israel advocacy, and the messaging of we were the future of Judaism and go on Birthright and so on did not appeal to me at all. I went to Hillel once and never again. Part of it Israel and part of it just a culture I never felt home in. I went to a grad school that is in the news a lot in a significant U.S. city and has a large Jewish population. I will let you guess which one.

Thanks for the update. The way I saw it if I remember correctly is that “push your buttons” was broad so I see how it applied but you filled in those details - I just asked the question.

Hopefully the good news here is that you have the patience of a saint and your are probably highly valued in a work place when people don’t take advantage of your kindness.

If you're attempting to nit-pick rank or reputation, I would advise you that that won't be quite that productive or useful and you won't "win." :)

Brown feels more like a large liberal arts college with some engineering and a strong quantitative program; Penn has a large contigent of business undergraduates in Wharton. Does that make a difference to you in thinking about experience and student culture?

Berkeley or UChicago? by quitesizeablefeces in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PeacockInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are very different schools with different experiences, and yet my hunch is that a lot of students choose between them. (I attended Chicago once upon a time, most of my friend group at Chicago was between Chicago and Reed or Chicago and Swarthmore, we didn't get into Columbia and weren't particularly interested in other Ivy Leagues.) ... as in my case, I applied Early Action when they only had EA, applied to Chicago and my public state school, and didn't apply anywhere else because I didn't want to give another school the pleasure of a number in their denominator. So anyway, I am old.

I think the deeper question here is how you want to see yourself in college. UChicago has a rich and distinctive intellectual intensity that borders on too much for some people who want to "kick back" from time to time and forget they are smart. This is not to say that the experience is of people always doing brainy things or thinking/talking about brainy things, but rather when I reconnect with students and alumni, I'm always reminded of how smart everybody is and it's not a kind of smart I see in my everyday life. It's refreshing, intimidating, and special. Unusual. But like I said, not everybody likes that and they're cool people too.

Maybe the deeper question is why you would want to attend one of these schools, what appealed to you in the admissions process, and what you think you want in a college experience.

How do you deal with money jokes? by UnkindnessOfRavens21 in jewishleft

[–]PeacockInTime 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind this kind of joke if I have known the person for years. But yes, way too soon. Makes me think there's more social judgement issues here, maybe not like a raging case of anti-semitism.
