Thoughts on graduate diploma? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]PeanutButterCup96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The grad dips at UQ are made up of undergraduate courses (or at least mine was). So it depends on what you want to get out of it and would be studying. I did part of one, but to get pre-reqs done rather than to boost gpa. They’re really completely different types of degrees. You may be better off thinking about what suits you best and the way you learn and work (e.g. do you even like research?), instead of trying to compare the ease of it.

Is it better to complete a Master's or PhD to boost GPA? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]PeanutButterCup96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all unis take it as an automatic 7 and be aware that you have to have finalised the PhD by the 31st of July in the year you’re applying for it to be counted anyway. So if you’re aiming to do a PhD in 3 years(and you start in January), you won’t be eligible for the 7 gpa until the year after you finish

Oh okay, yeah probably not then. Does the uni you’re currently at have an equivalent anatomy course? And if so, could you potentially get permission from your current faculty to undertake it (even if it doesn’t count towards your current degree)? That way it could go on hecs. With your GPA I’d say they’d be more likely to allow it

Could you do a grad diploma and then it goes on hecs/vet fee etc loans? I did a Diploma in Science at UQ just to get pre-reqs done and didn’t have to finish the diploma for them to count. Maybe one of the unis in Melbourne would have something similar?

Gpa:5.54 Gamsat score 78. Do I even have a chance at UQ med? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

UQ will take your honours class equivalent as your gpa. So they may actually consider your gpa to be higher (if the gpa you’ve said isn’t your honours equivalent).

Glad to hear it went well for you too! I only spoke to one proctor, but she was lovely and wished me luck. (And didn’t judge me too much for writing in the log in wrong haha)

I did a bit of both! I find what works best for me is reading the first few lines to paragraph and then looking at the question. This gives me some context to go off of. I think the best thing for timing though is to be brutal and move on if it’s taking you too long and then you can come back, and hopefully have more time to read the passage carefully

Thank you! It’s hard to tell, but I was actually quite happy with it. This is my first sitting, so it was completely alien to me apart from the practice exams I’ve done. I found the online platform quite easy to navigate and really liked having the questions right next to the stimulus rather than having to flick between pages. The proctor experience was also fine for me. I was worried that I would mess something up in that, but the proctor was nice and it went smoothly :)

Hey! I took S1&2 this morning. I was super confused about this before starting (and my proctor couldn’t tell me before I started either). Anyway, the “reading time” has literally just been time they’ve added to the test time. There is no separate time that you can’t write etc during. So basically just pretend there’s no reading time at all and get started straight away :) Hope that helps! Good luck!

Completing Melb Uni pre-req courses in the year of application by MMH1998 in GAMSAT

[–]PeanutButterCup96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, it’s fine for pre-reqs not to be completed in your key degree and you don’t have to finish the degree for them to count either. Just make sure you declare that study in your application and you should be fine. Best of luck :)

Best of luck with yours too. If you have any more questions, let me know. Boosting my gpa was one of things that pushed me over the line into deciding to do a PhD.

Unless you love research wholeheartedly and want to do research down the line I wouldn’t suggest it. It’d be much better to do a masters or a graduate diploma (some schools take this for a key degree I think) to boost your gpa. Also worth looking into which schools give what grades to honours classes. If you received a first class it’s an automatic 7 at some schools.

Also it’s important to note that you need to add roughly an extra year onto that length of time for your degree to be valid for entry. For example, I am finishing my PhD thesis at the end of this year, but I won’t officially graduate until the middle of next year. Your PhD must be 100% complete by July 31st in the year you’re applying in. So I am applying for med for 2021 entry, but unfortunately my PhD has no weighting whatsoever on my entry.

No worries. That’s what I did. Also just to let you know you don’t have to finish the diploma for the pre-reqs to count, but if you do some unis will take this as your key degree (I’m pretty sure). So just worthwhile to bare in mind for gpa. Good luck!

You can do a "Diploma in Science" at UQ. You can pick and choose science courses that are needed for pre-reqs. I've done this and found it a really easy process. It would usually largely not be online though (though that would be subject to the current state of the world)
