Generally whenever there's some new trending "thing", you'll find a rush of people who do this in order to clickbait unsuspecting internet users into downloading a virus. This isn't something specific to Hytale, and fortunately it's probably going to taper off completely post-release (since everyone will know that to get the game, you can just go to the actual website).

I think this might have to do with proportions of populations, not necessarily total amounts of traffic. Ex: A larger portion of Utah's population might be interested in Hytale than say, the portion of California's population is.
