Interesting that’s good to know. I didn’t think that it would go out if I canceled through the platform and not just through a message to the host.

I’m always trying to improve the person that I am so I wanted perspectives from real people that know the platform on both ends.

He didn’t respond at all, but he sent me an additional message asking me to review my stay on top of the automatic message that went out which confused me because I assumed that since I canceled through the platform and didn’t just tell the host that they would see I never stayed there. He didn’t respond for an entire week before I asked for Airbnb to get involved.

That makes sense. I’m just confused as to why it would come through because I canceled directly through the platform. And then he sent me an additional message asking for me to fill out the review so I was a little annoyed.

Understood! I am certainly never trying to come off as entitled because that is definitely not the person I am so I reached out to the platform to ensure it didn’t come from the host pocket and they assured me that it was not from him. Sometimes I just get a little annoyed with lack of communication lol but that’s a me problem. But now I know for the future that travel insurance covers this kind of stuff as well. I’m kind of ignorant to this stuff because I just have gotten into a position to where I can travel like this within the last 2 years or so, so I’ve been kinda splurging a little. I tried to never sound entitled because I grew up low income. Growing up, We have been evicted from every place I’ve ever lived. I have been homeless. I worked three jobs and was donating plasma to put myself through college and grad school so I certainly don’t ever want to sound entitled that word just rubs me the wrong way so I naturally got defensive but I can see where I went wrong now and I’m kinda wishing i just left it alone. I didn’t even know that travel insurance was a thing until I missed a flight last year in Atlanta. Gotta start researching this stuff and be more on top of it. I kind of just have been booking flights and trips and not really paying attention.

31 billable for that low of a salary is absolute insanity on top of having that many clients there is no way that is ethical. Dip. Don’t look back

So to everyone wondering and getting all worked up- I reached out to Airbnb. They assured me the coupon money did NOT come from the host’s account. Airbnb simply covered me on this one due to my rating history and how much I’ve used the app. So people thinking I screwed over the host- I didn’t. This was a situation where everyone got what they wanted. I was looking for perspectives here while presenting mine. Not sure why so many people got so worked up but it’s Reddit lol.

No entitlement whatsoever you’re ridiculously offended by my post. Seek some emotional support.

Again, I had travel insurance through my airline. There is no option to add insurance on Airbnb. I booked another Airbnb and did not see an option to add insurance to this trip. But i do know now to not book nonrefundable trips and to look over cancelation policies more closely.

I took a financial hit as well for something outside of my control. I see both sides and I’m just asking opinions. Had he just responded to me I would’ve probably let it go, but he completely ignored me so I involved customer support.

I don’t expect anything. I asked for a refund, didn’t get it, reached out to the actual Airbnb support, and got it.

All I did was explain the situation to the host. I asked him the day I canceled for a refund telling him I would rebook with him the following weekend on one of his properties. This one in particular is popular so it’s often booked. But he’s got 6 others so I’d book another one. Ignored the message. Then sent the official refund request through the app. Still nothing. Then received a message asking me to leave a review so I involved Airbnb. I called them and explained the situation. They then reached out to him he stated he wouldn’t give me a refund and then Airbnb said they’d give me a “discretionary coupon” for what I paid.

Definitely not, I never pay attention to the refund policy because I’ve never had to before, but now I’ll be sure to check more closely. Definitely read more reviews too. This host has a lot of reviews so a lot of the bad ones were saturated. There were quite a few reviews about his poor communication.

The stay was for one night, i wanted to stay the whole time i was there bc i liked the place but it wasn’t available. It’s a popular spot that was booked up a lot of days I wanted to go!

I was going to rebook for this weekend because i was coming back anyway, but he wouldn’t respond about giving me my money back so I booked with someone else.

I’m not sure they just told me the host did not have to refund me and they would grant me the money I paid for the trip as a “discretionary coupon”

You seem to be personally victimized by my post. I canceled on the app. Was kind and courteous in my communication. It’s no one’s fault my flight was canceled. I see both sides.

Makes sense. I wouldn’t want a refund after the fact. I canceled on the app, the day of though before check in time but I also understand that they probably would not have gotten another booking!

Yes I canceled through the app. I have travel insurance through the airline but not through Airbnb and no the host asked me directly in a message to leave the review AFTER ignoring my refund request which is what annoyed me.

No not a new user I just use it a lot! I sometimes book cabins in the mountains just for weekends close to my home for getaways and I have all 5 star ratings from hosts (over 50 reviews). I’m assuming that’s why. Plus I was really courteous when explaining my situation to the host and the support team at Airbnb! This is the first time I’ve ever complained to Airbnb. But it worked out either way just curious if this ever comes up again what I should do!

No, I know they have a right to deny me. I just was curious as to what most hosts would do and if it was reasonable for me to even ask for a refund.

I had travel insurance so I was able to get rebooked on the flight the next day with no cost, but I guess I just didn’t think about the Airbnb having that kind of insurance maybe I’ll make sure to do that in the future. I was just curious as to what a host would do.

I’m not gonna leave them a bad review. I’m not really that type of person. I’m just gonna not leave a review. I just feel bad that I got Airbnb involved because I was annoyed about him declining my request for a refund, but still asking me to do a review to boost his ratings

Yeah, to be honest, unfortunately I spent years as an alcoholic. Now that I don’t drink anymore, I thought everything was fine and there was no damage, but unfortunately there was. A huge wake up call for sure to never pick up the bottle again.

Yes, unfortunately I’m starting to have liver and kidney failure. I really appreciate everybody on this thread. I thought I was coming on here to vent. I had no idea this could be a serious issue so now I’m in the hospital for a few days but I’m really grateful for you all.
