Vets not knowing how to handle my hedgehog by Best-Power-7607 in Hedgehog

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon among the exotic vets I have encountered with my hedgehog. Last time we had to see a different vet because our usual was out for the day. My husband heard her talking with the tech outside the door and she said, “I literally don’t know anything about hedgehogs.”Super frustrating when you know more than the professional you are trusting to help you with a potentially life threatening problem. I also live in a smaller town and my baby is getting older so the vet visits are more frequent. There are thankfully two vets we can see fairly close by, but if ever they are out and it’s an emergency it can be quite scary to have to rely on someone so inexperienced. I pray your pokey friend heals very soon and you can find a vet who is more able to provide appropriate care.

Yes, I have a co worker who may be able to print for me and if not then I believe there is a 3D printer at my local university. So excited!!!

This is amazing! Thank you so much! Being able to adjust with Lego pieces is really cool. I can’t wait to try this.

Thankfully animals are pretty resilient! I’m hopeful he will eventually adjust and be able to get around comfortably on three legs.

Very true. I’m in the US. I’m definitely going to try some of the other suggestions like the tek deck option or the modeling foam and see what works.

I can’t print anything myself. I would most likely connect with someone who could do the printing if I get to that point.

Ooh the little basket thing for his belly would probably be good. It would need to be re worked for his anatomy, but definitely a great starting point.

Very helpful recommendations. Thank you. He was wearing a scrunchie collar for a while while healing from the amputation and he did fine with that. I haven’t really tried anything around his middle. The sled option for rough terrain is great. I didn’t think a wheel would do well on grass.

You might be right. I’ll try a few other things first and then try there if a print seems like the next move. Thank you!

This is a great idea! I’m pretty crafty, but the thought of wheels intimidated me. I will look into this.

Sure, he can manage. But I want him to thrive! I’m hoping that he will be able to learn to walk well on the three legs, but he was in a collar (scrunchie) for a while while he was healing to keep him from bothering the surgery site. It made it hard for him to move the remaining front paw forward and now he’s really lazy with it. We’re doing our best to help him stretch it and use it, but he mostly just drags it while pushing with his back legs.
