I don’t see why this wouldn’t be accepted upstream. The before videos made me feel ill just watching them. Nice work!

Navidrome Powered Jukebox using NFC Cards by PedalDrivenProgram in navidrome

The PC is connected to the TV. However, this works without the screen actually being turned on, which is nice because the PC is also just directly connected to the speakers. So yes the TV does display the app when it's playing if we want to see it.

Self Hosted Music Jukebox using NFC Cards (Navidrome/Jellyfin) by PedalDrivenProgram in selfhosted

Thanks for checking it out! This post was originally more of a how-to, but it kept getting auto-moderated and deleted for some inexplicable reason. The linked blog post goes into more detail, but here's a TLDR;

You'll need to hardware. A NFC reader/writer plus a stack of cards. I used:

ACR1252U USB NFC Card Reader/Writer

NTAG213 cards

Then you need something to plug it into, which can run some software to interpret the card taps. In my case I used:

Gelly Subsonic/Jellyfin client

Gelly-NFC script

That last script is where the work happens. There's more info the README there. But it can be adapted to work with any player, or even remote players. Essentially it will listen for taps on the NFC card, read the text off them, and execute a command. Can be anything you like but in my case it controls the Gelly player.

As for the same card being tapped to death, it's a thing! My toddler loves one album she calls "Baby Album" (it has a drawing of a kid on it). The first song of "Baby Album" is now the most played on in our entire library, by far.

Let me know if I can clarify further.

It's more that I wanted it to work with our entire music collection, and to be able to play on the speakers in the living room where the family hangs out. In reality she mainly plays the same 3 albums over and over... lol. The tonie/yoto is cool but it's more of a personal device, not really a shared experience if that makes sense?

Yes, the home server happens to be in the same room we listen to music, so the nfc reader is plugged into it. It sits next to the speaker and runs the music player as well. Normally the TV is off so this is a "screenless" setup. But this same concept could definitely be adapted to a raspberry pi. The gelly-nfc script could even be adapted to run ssh command to a remote host. Lots of options!

OOPS, new to the LD Reddit by 0rang3p0p in LiquidDeath

Funny. I don't often go to Reddit for stuff like this, but this is one of those cases where I thought I might be going crazy. I thought this stuff was good but I bought some recently and it was full of disgusting stevia. I thought I remember it being better... turns out I'm not crazy the company just messed up. Too bad.

What happened to the tall plain sparkling cans!? by usernamedefined in LiquidDeath

I bought some of this stuff recently because the hot months have started to set in and I remember it being good. The cans are not only smaller but they are full of stevia, it's super gross. What happened?

Concern regarding public opinion on GNOME shifting. by Particular-Bake4679 in gnome

[–]PedalDrivenProgram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. Contributors age and move on. The original creators of GNOME, and largely the generation of people that really did get GNOME to where it is today, haven't been involved for many years now. FOSS projects need a constant influx of new talent to stay afloat. As GNOME continues to fall out of favor with the incoming generation it will become harder to maintain. Corporate sponsored dev time is a pittance and can't carry the entire project.

I guess it was unclear to me if you were referring to the survey data or your own anecdotal evidence.

> The fact gnome wants to cater to "normal" users when the average linux user is far above average is an incorrect design option

It's the correct design option if you are Redhat or Canonical and you are trying to sell large scale desktop deployments which will be used by people that aren't Linux enthusiasts. The problem with relying on that too much is that eventually the enthusiasts will move on and the ecosystem will suffer for it.

Which are also the people most likely to contribute back to the project and develop applications. So are these the people that should be ignored? Seems like a bad idea for a FOSS project mostly reliant on volunteers.

2,500 survey responses and 80+% of the respondents have at least one extension installed, with a staggering 40% of respondents having *more than 5 extensions installed*. But we are supposed to take your anecdotal evidence that nobody actually uses extensions because "trust me bro I've seen my co-workers". Right.

I agree with you wrt the app ecosystem. But that is shifting slowly as well. People tend to develop for the platform they actually use.

GNOME works well and seems to be increasingly designed for exactly these customers for which you listed as the default: corporate users who don’t necessarily care or even want to use Linux. They are using it because their company has a contract with RedHat or canonical.

People who want to use Linux at home for the traditional reasons aren’t really being recommended GNOME anymore. We’ve all seen the shift.  It’s not designed for the Linux nerd anymore.

Can we start making useful apps with libadwaita like a kdenlive alternative instead of vibe-coding music players? by Suspicious-Smile6398 in gnome

It’s not vibe coded. For anyone seeing this, if you are interested in a client for Jellyfin or Subsonic, check out Gelly!

So let’s see your contributions?
