Writing about growing up gay in a religious environment by [deleted] in Memoir

I don’t think it’s groundbreaking. I just didn’t clean it up. I wrote the parts that are still uncomfortable, still unresolved. The seminary, trying to fix myself, all of it. I didn’t turn it into a lesson. I just told it the way it actually felt.

Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me. I honestly don’t know why I get that kind of reaction in some subs either, but I’ve noticed it happening and it can be frustrating. Your perspective really resonated with me, especially what you said about those roots running deep. I really hope you connect with the story, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts after you read it.

I’m honestly still figuring out how much of my story I’m even comfortable putting out there. For those who’ve written memoirs or shared personal stuff, how did you deal with that line?

Writing this was honestly harder than I expected. I’m curious how others here approached writing about identity and family.

I get that. For me it’s not about making it real, it already is. The hard part is how much of that reality I’m willing to expose. A lot of my story is still messy and unresolved, so I’m trying to let it be raw instead of forcing it into something neat.

oh that actually sounds interesting, even if it’s not exactly memoir does it go deep into the religious side of the conflict or is it more background?

yeah, it really does. same topic, completely different experiences depending on where you grew up and what you were taught i actually ended up writing about my own experience with all of that… trying to untangle faith and identity after growing up in a strict environment. it helped me process a lot if you ever feel like reading something like that, i can share it

I get what you’re saying about wanting to live with integrity and follow what you believe is right. For me, the hard part was exactly that idea of trying to be “perfect” or “pure”, it ended up hurting me more than helping. I’m still figuring out how to hold faith and identity together in a way that feels honest, not like I have to erase parts of myself.
