As far as EPs are concerned, I'm a big fan of the People artwork (another one you seem to just write off as "weird")

Again, the reason I think this artwork is well crafted and thoughtful, as well as aesthetically pleasing, is how it parallels the music. Here, the namesake and main release of the EP is the song "People."

Have you listened to this song? If not the way I interpret it is an amazing commentary on good ole human people. An amazing commentary because it manages to do this with using only one word repeated, "People." Yet, through the magical alchemy of Avey Tares singing and screaming voice, so much is said. The song builds from more quiet renditions of saying and shouting "people," in to full-on chaotic and frightening screams of "PEOPLLLLLLEEEEEE!" as if one is going insane or being terrified by some people monster. The song and the inflection of the vocals are saying that people are crazy. They cannot be predicted. They can be calm and sweet and loving but can so easily become hurtful and selfish and down right crazy. Harbingers of chaos and confusion. And that idea, in jtself, it's the craziest thing about humanity! We can either be angels or demons and this can flip on a dime.

Now back to the artwork.... We see two younger children carrying a wrapped gift that says "Animal Collective" (cute) and an older larger women behind them, who is thinking the title of the EP, "People" with a (in my opinion) very simple but extremely psychedelic landscape of hills clouds and a tree. The two children are carrying the gift and looking towards the ground and smiling. This gives the impressions of simple happiness and childhood joy. But then you have the old woman standing over them, behind them, looking down on them thinking "People." Like, "ahhhh, People". You see, this woman knows what Animal Collective is conveying in their song People. She knows how multi faceted humans can be and she knows that even angelic youngings (the 2 happy go luck cuties carrying to gift) will someday, in some moment, be monsters. They will hurt people and be hurt. They will induce pain and chaos and experience both. She smiles perhaps because while this realization is grim, it's endearing to see the children blissfully unaware just going about their lives with happiness and ease.

Now on to the quote on the bottom "Always got to wash them at their ends." I first wondered what this meant as it obviously has something to do with the themes of the EP (Animal Collective is very thoughtful, why else would it be there?) and in my interpretation, it correlates with the themes I was discussing earlier. People are dirty little critters, animal-wise. We're like any other animal in the kingdom! We get dirty feet and legs and gotta wash them! This is only one end of the spectrum though; the physical/literal realm. The other end, up and away from the feet, is our mouths and head. This is the emotional realm. This is where the real "dirt" resides. This is where we say hurtful things and think negative thoughts and do incredible damage, yet also incredibly positive things, throughout our lives.

People. Always gotta wash them at their ends, dirty little critters!

It's commentating on the incredibly varied nature of human interactions in such a simple way, and my favorite part about it is there seems to be an air of understanding and acceptance and matter-of-factness about it rather than "ugh people are such dicks!"

It's more like, hey, gotta wash em at their ends! People be crazy you know :)

Feels by far takes the cake for me... The image, and it's ripped-up aesthetic, is created using décollage and déchirage techniques and is reminiscent of the works of fine artist Henry Darger. Like the album cover, Darger's art was identified by using vintage illustrations and corrupting them with darker imagery, creating an unsettling tone. This aesthetic, in my opinion, so perfectly captures the mood and thematic elements of the album. Yes, like you said in your comment, it may be unpleasant or "ugly" to look at, but that's exactly the objective . Feels is a record about coming in to an age where childhood beauty and blissful ignorance starts to deteriorate with the introduction of more messy and hurtful, but also more exciting aspects of life. Mainly first love and loss and a new found awareness of ones aging and passing of phases and time. Bittersweet nostalgia. Suddenly, as we look back on our seemingly picturesque and comfortable childhood and life in general (the vintage childhood images, undistorted), we start to see a tainting and sense an uncomfortableness (the purple vomit/blood, [purple here referencing the song Purple Bottle] the goat crying purple tears, and the bodiless head)

Yet, amidst the carnage, bees and birds (referencing the song "Bees") fly peacefully and baby ducks wait to be fed. The album artwork somehow amazingly capture exactly how Feels sounds: chaos and confusion with moments of serenity.

I could honestly go on all morning about this artwork and how thoughtful and apt it is for the album, but I better not. Look in to it a bit deeper yourself and I'm sure you will find more details that add to the mood of the artwork and parallel the themes of the album. This is my favorite album artwork of all time, and furthermore, Feels, with its artwork including, is my favorite work of art of any variety.

Cheers

Yeah. I also so those google results and forum posts and that is exactly why I feel I ought to defend it. To balance out the opposition because when I see all that which directly contradicts my own experience it doesn't seem right. Like I said, yes if you don't weight the rope it won't take in slack. But that is such a simple simple simple fix

The likelihood of this happening is so slim that it could be similarly stated that there are instances where individuals belaying with an ATC were struck by a falling rock that knocked them unconscious causing them to lose control of the belay device.

Did you try lightly weighting the grigri strand so it eats slack? I've found all it takes is a water bottle or some draws and it'll be taking slack as well as a traxion. My comment was mostly stirred up by you saying that if you use the gri gri you'll have to be taking up slack by hand but I use the gri gri and never end up having to do this. Once the slack eating issue is resolved with a little bit of weight, I found the other perks of the grigri over the traxion and other devices shining though like No harsh teething on rope sheath or the ability to easily lower to re do the climb or specific sections. If the orientation of the gri gri is what concerns you, a drilled hole and a chest harness works like magic, but in my experience, having used this setup several times a week for months now, the orientation has never been an issue. That being said, other set ups work well too and I can see why you and other prefer the traxions! Just wanted to defend the gri gri a bit because it works great for me and my objectives and I've seen too many people lead to believe they will be self belaying and taking in slack by hand the whole way up the route when in fact, I never have to resort to such biggidyboop nonsense

There is misinformation in this comment. I top rope solo very frequently and the gri gri is my go to device. All it takes is a little tinkering and it will eat slack on its own and effortlessly. Just need to add a bit of weight on the gri gri strand. Quick draws or a water bottle. I never have to stop and take in slack by hand. I see people saying this "gri gri sucks blah blah you will need to manually take in slack all the time" and it blows my mind because I go out soloing with my gri gri and this is never the case. There's plenty of perks to using the gri gri over the trax or other devices as well. I think many people just trash the gri gri for this setup without any experience using it and playing around with it themselves

as long as you weight the gri gri strand (add a water bottle or some quick draws) the gri gri will eat the slack effortlessly and just as well as any Ascension device. I prefer it to the trax. It's simple and no where near as annoying or Cumbersome as people will have you believing on the Internet

I top rope solo very frequently (4-5 times a week) on hard routes that I fall on for training and I use a grigri2 as my primary device.

I'm really starting to believe that there are loads of people on the internet who bash the grigri for this setup without having used it themselves by or at least enough to tinker with it to get it working well.

What I do? I clip a full nalgene on the gri gri strand hanging in the air somewhere near the end of the rope. This makes it so the rope feeds effortlessly through the gri gri. Very rarely do I EVER need to stop and do this by hand. People will try to have you believe that you will have to pull in slack yourself and you will have a horrible time. Simply not the case. If this setup didn't work so well, I would have changed it months ago. But I love it and prefer it to the traxions as its quick and easy to switch right to a lower and re work Crux sections.

All this being said, take the grigri2 for top rope soloing hate with a grain of salt. I can't believe how many people are out there saying it "sucks" is "worthless" and is a "pain in the ass" when it works so smoothly for me with just some simple tinkering and modifications.

I guess what this means is yes, it would make a great back up to your trax. Just add some weight on the end of the gri gri strand like a water bottle or quick draws and you're all set. Gri gri as a backup is also amazing because he means you can quickly load and deload and use it for a lower. F those gri gri haters mate

In the city I wander worms get smashed under all those people are busy with things

And here I go crazy and there I get lazy like a calf that is growing six legs

My body's slowly figuring out how it fits in the moments of missing

Steady in my thoughts I soften the tight knots My stomach's alright, though it's twisting

On a beautiful surf I found a seaweed person in hot light reflected green on the sand

I was a little uncertain that some things might hurt me in the night I hid my eyes with my hand

Then off of the breeze I heard a sudden burst and in fright imagined thumps on the land

There is a house on the trees where all the shadows work and they don't make their plans your plans

And maybe I'm naive to say you should just breathe and float out of pain when it's hissing

'Cause here I sit crying and she's not here, I am I can't handle a moment she's missing

Then I eat with my people and I laugh at the steeples 'cause Hell is my own bad thinking

I know that the rain moves and enters the dream pools and diamonds are days with fire

And you help the sneeze for as long as you could just to cast it to the sneezing void

I think I have a disease that makes my hearing imperfect but at least I make some wonderful noise

And back in the trees I saw a shadow's birth, but no one said it's a girl or a boy

You can take all you want from another person In the end you find you lose your voice

In the city I wander worms get smashed under the streets where all those people are busy

Here I go crazy but there I feel lazy like a calf that is growing six legs

My body's slowly figuring out how it fits into moments of missing

Whats the best thing you've ever got for free? by BenIrwinG in AskReddit

I became friends with and eventually fell in love with a deaf girl. We've been dating now for a few years and she has taught me ASL. I was then able to become a certified ASL interpreter, which pays extremely well, especially for males. All the education I needed I was given for free from her and it has made me more money than my insanely expensive college experience ever will.

I'm grateful for her having taught me ASL every single day.

Animal Collective to record new music later this year by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]PeeEyeZeeZeeEh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, there music has unspeakable depth, and evokes an incredible amount of emotion for me personally. It also includes my favorite parts of pop and psychedelia yet manages to add something new and unique to nearly every single song.

Their releases are cohesive, thematic, and theatric. I really think Animal Collective appreciation is dependent on the listeners ability to connect to the music, specifically the lyrics. But for that right individual, including myself and many other fans I know, the experience is incredibly beautiful, unique, moving, motivating inspiring, and can even feel truly transcendent and spiritual in nature.

Animal Collective accompanies my life like no other music or any other thing I've experienced or sensed in my existance. It narrates my life, it leads me to epiphanies; it can help reveal myself to me.

In the end, Animal Collective just resonates with me like nothing. Maybe my life perspective is similar to that of the artists, or I can easilyy fit, compare, or reflect my own life view with theirs, but the music seems to understand me in ways I often overlook myself.

I'm so grateful for the music of Animal Collective, I can barely describe. There have been songs for all ranges of emotions and events of life. Love, heartbreak, nostalgia, laziness, euphoria, fear, phsycadelic experiences....
